I was just wondering...

Are any of you guys a member of Students For a Free Tibet?

I thought of starting a chapter at my school, but can't cough up the $100 start up fee. I am trying to decide if it would be worth it to scrounge up the money or not.

anything is worth it if you know that much greatness and good is to bloom from it. plus, you must have the passion and drive for it..which it seems like you do.
so much luck with it and keep us posted on how it works out for you.

It certainly symbolizes something great and good...
Where the time goes... I mean, given that the smallest gesture true to form can go a long way... you may feel that some things just need macro attention to the root of the problem in order to yield the proper solution.

Organizations may certainly help to an extent, but I hate to see factions front all over the place when the injustices are adapted to here. Maybe there's a better way to maximize people's efforts... that said though, I figure it would be definitely worth while in any case I guesss. Depends on how much time you have and what... I've never heard of the organization your talking about specifically or what they do per se, but just the benign notions, subtle experiences and knowledge that would constitute the impetus of life time would be perhaps worth the while.

The world needs a better solution. I believe economically and socially (if done with right motive and not too late) it's in sustainable benign energy and if mandated extensively and right... would solve many of the problems and injustices we have today and leave plenty of room for other advances, whether it be social, political, or economical...

In any case, I hope you have sky light windows in your house.

Anyway. Peace out.

We have a chapter on my campus. I don't think they do anything. They probably suck.

I now take back the "they probably don't do anything" part of my comment. They had a bake sale the other day... and brownies were bought on a donation basis. You can't beat two brownies for fifty cents. Plus they had this little minty flavor to them too. They were seriously some of the best brownies I've ever had.

The girl at the table had no idea what I was talking about when I asked her if she liked the Beastie Boys though. Shame on her.

He does have a point. Why sit around with thumb cuffs on...? Fine, but where's the straight up action due...!!!!! You gotta think in the right terms! You can't have a play about saving the rain forests, and come out on stage with nothing but tree climbing gear. Good statement... but not saving the rain forests. Hell, one day, if not with todays science wherewithal, maybe we could turn parts of the desert into greenland and have new rainforests. Maybe a shout in the dark. Nevermind. I'm trying to think of a type movie or play where a players action or reaction is so absurd that it lets the movie down as really just has to stop and rehearse a little more to get it right. I mean, how 'bout ok, they get in a race with the bad guy for it all who has the latest rocket fuel car at this point .... let's say, and you show up in a solar panalled go cart, nahh, how bout your in a gun fight and you show up with a knife. It's untouchably trite, but all the same... and I know it may not conform to the Tibetans religion... but fight for your right, right!!! Any and every means possible for goodness sakes, every sake. OK. Check this. "Non violence" takes capital to overthrow an enemy. Corner the sustainable benign energy market and wall street and place embargos on China once mass produced in ways we don't even know of because there is no real mandates for anything right due time and prrrrrrroperrr.. Course many with the same fundamental problem reside in the states and every where else too just as Tibet, maybe not exactly per se, but ultimately in and of the same terms none the less. And what do you got? Petition, petition, who got the petition? (Petition this corrupt government) Doesn't justify the equilibrium... if you know what I'm saying. Ahhhhhhhh, time is runnin, I'm passin passin...runnin, better get with this time y'all, cause there might be no next time... Anybody mind? Where are the great legal minds of this country? They're CERTAINLY NOT minding. Help me. Someone. Anyone. SOS. LOOK there, right there's the solution. WHAT DO WE GOT??!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to let you know that I am part of an SFT chapter and the fee is to support the 4 people who run the whole entire thing worldwide so they can get paid $29,000 a year and so that they can print materials like buttons, pamphlets and T shirts..

Does your chapter do anything? I am worried that if I start one it become stale after a short while. My goal would be to start a chapter in order to spread the word about the Tibetan plight. I don't have any idea how to accomplish that. Bake sales and flyers can only go so far.

Yes, the trick is being in college and a liberal college at that. It also helps to get Tibetans involved. Depending where you live. We do a lot of tabling with postcards, petitions and flyers to get students involved. We invites monks to create sand mandalas, show Tibetan art and cook Tibetan food... The people at the office in NYC can be really helpful too if you're stuck or need help. They can put you in contact with people or resources.. Movies are also a great way to spread awareness. So much to tell you and yet I can't think of specifics of the top of my head.. PM if you're serious and what to know more details about what to do...

Even if you're not at a college or near one, it is pretty easy to get things started... My experience is mainly with high school and college chapters but there are chapters that aren't affiliated with a school and they work out just as well..
