Nice one, Bbabe!

Have you got a cover date of that issue?

I see AdRockis is wearing that same red ribbon on his wrist that Madonna has. Does anyone know what that is about? I had a classmate who had that as well and she wouldn't tell.

I don't know the exact date because I don't have the whole magazine - I got the article as part of a clippings packet I purchased from someone in Australia.

All I can gather is:

1. it's probably from 1987 since there is an ad for Janet Jackson's control album the remixes (on the opposite side of the article) which was released in 87'.

2. it's from the Australian/UK version of 17 magazine since the ad on the opposite side of the photo is for Le Clic cameras and the price is in pounds. Remember Le Clic cameras (http://www.discam.freeola.com/Leclicc.jpg) - what a flashback - I had a friend who had a pink one.

so going by the ads - my answer is deffinately 80s probably 87'

I like my current signature, though I'm always finding new quotes I like so I don't know how long it will be up.

Just for the record - I don't think Yauch admiring women with large breasts makes him a pig - it just makes him a man.

Men have preferences when it comes to women - some just state it more bluntly than others.

When someone quotes a lyric from an old beastie song - like cooky puss or something from LTI - they don't put the year.

I think it's obvious that the quote in my sig is old and including the year would
just imply that I was underestimating people's intelligence.

btw - if Yauch indicated to me in any way that he was offended or found the quote unflattering - I would certainly show him the respect of removing it - but he strikes me as a fun guy with a good sense of humor and I think he'd just laugh at it.

Brooklyn Babe
02-28-2005, 09:00 PM
far be it for me to argue with anyone - to each his own -

I used the word breasts rather than tits in my response because thats a word I word normally use. Sometimes i'll say boobs or chest. Those are words I feel comfortable using - but then again I'm not a man. I hardly ever hear a man say "nice breasts" - it sounds awkward and formal.

Men and women tend to use completely different words when it comes to certain things.

Yauch has been showing women way more respect than he did during LTI -any person who visits this board is a Beastie fan and would know that

I think I will change my sig soon though - maybe I'll use this lyric by yauch from "rhymin and stealin" for my next one ;)

"We got wenches on the benches and bitties with titties
Housing all girlies from city to city"
;)

And I agree, the beasties, no matter what they do or say to stick up for women or the world, in the end they will still be men, and personally I perfer those days (y) they were blunt and sick and funny and they remind me of me.

because to be honest if he didnt think like a man, I wouldnt like him as much.

This seems very silly to me ladies. Yauch said it. It may not be nice and it certainly isn't what he thinks now but he said it. People who are aware of the men they have become will KNOW this about him. That's all that matters.

**I edited out "let it go". A wise woman pointed out to me that what I say is viewed as a slap on the wrist as opposed to just stating my opinion. Which, in this case, I was just stating my opinion.

Unless I tell you to stop or I close a thread you are welcome to ignore me.

Shouldn't all the dumb questions that get posted to this board tell you that many people don't know anything about who they are?

Aside of the boys themselves and maybe people who've toured with them, I don't think any of us here know anything about who they are in their everyday lives.

Brooklyn, I'd keep my signature as is until you're ready for a new one. Your point about people not citing the year when they quote lyrics is well taken.

About tits: I don't care what anyone calls them--it's not the words, it's the intent. I don't necessarily always want to hear sanitized, pc-ized talk in this regard, know what I mean? That doesn't say anything about the women or men that I hang around with.

Very true but I don't see why we should care. IF people want to be educated about the band(s) they love then they will seek that information. I really enjoy Weezer but I don't choose to seek all the information I can about Rivers. NOW, I adore Foo Fighters and I KNOW everything about Dave Grohl. ;)

It occured to me that since I will eventually change my sig as I often do - for variety - people may read this thread after the change and wonder what the hell we have been discussing here:

so for the benefit of those people...

this is my current sig -
"I like any girls so long as they've got great big tits." - Yauch

Brooklyn Babe
03-01-2005, 02:50 PM
That's a blanket statement that is untrue. If you respect men as you say you do, you wouldn't accuse them of having sick thoughts

"I Gotta' Straighten My Thoughts I'm Thinking Too Much Sick Shit." - Mike D.
(Sure Shot)

Keep in mind, as well, that the band has chosen to change the lyrics to songs they've performed in the years since LTI was released. I think you'd be hard-pressed, Brooklyn Babe, to find an occasion when they've performed the lyrics to "Rhymin and Stealin" as you quoted them once in at least the past ten years.

that is very true, but I would like to point out that while they've changed a lot:
they still refer to "ridin the bozack"
Adrock still grabs his crotch.
he still says: Because I've Got The Flow Where I Grab My Dick
And Say Oh My God That's The Funky Shit"
Their lyrics are still filled with plenty of sexual references and innuendo and they still use profanity.

I think the lyric changes they have made are due more to the fact that 2 of them are married and 1 is in a serious relationship and they don't want to offend their significant others. I can undertand that - I mean I'm sure Yauch's wife would'nt enjoy hearing
"MCA's in the back because he's skeezin' with a whore"

a great read. everyone who is slightly offended by this should LIGHTHEN up. This is part of the beasties histroy and while they may slightly shy away from this i bet they secretly laugh when they read this stuff. this is classic humour and anyone who gets all caught up about comments like the 'girls with big tits' must not get out much. take a joke fer christs sake, there are other important things to get pissed off about.

I agree. None of us can say how they act and how they dont. It could be the same as when they were younger, maybe they act one way and come off another way when they arnt in the eyes of the media and the public.

I dont think that any of us should be allowed to say if they are good men or if they arnt, because the sad truth is that 99.9% of us will never know them outside of TV and the internet.

I hate this constant arguing about who they are and who they arnt when none of us know for sure.

I tend to want to stay on topic in a thread--what I was saying is that if we're going to go off--way off--then we might as well not beat each other up and talk about one of the other tangential topics--tits--instead. It was meant to be a light stab at levity but I didn't make it work.

I tend to just listen to the music and not worry about the personal drama of the band/artist. I have certainly liked bands that did distasteful things in their personal lives, but it was either ancient history by the time I started listening (because the band is no longer a band--like the Beatles) or I didn't know the real deal at the time. I don't usually research bands I'm interested in, I don't care whether they are married, and I certainly don't think they owe their fans access to their personal lives.

But I guess that I have never been a big fan of a band that was currently giving interviews that offended me. For instance, I could think that Eminem was an articulate guy with a great vocabulary but I'm not going to put my money behind his horrible songs referencing his ex-wife, or the anti-gay stuff, etc. I'm not sure where the line is for me.

When it comes to Beastie Boys, I found their conduct to be icky back in the day but I just pretend that it didn't happen. I don't want them to apologize and I don't think they should be embarrassed. But I choose to pretend that PB was their first album and I don't read articles written before its release. That works for me. :)

P.S. I do love that Dave Grohl is always saying great stuff about his mom! Daisy, if you know bad stuff about him, never ever tell me.

And by the way, I've never had a signature because I can't think of anything to say. But my least favorite type of signature is the one that references the greatness of the person posting.

I think Licensed to Ill is a great album and I would never disregard it's happening.

It's always going to be their first album whether you wish it to be or not. In fact, I'm sure there probably wouldn't be a "Paul's Boutique" or any other one of their albums if LTI never happened. I think that their experiences during that era allowed them to learn from that and see that where they were at wasn't a good place for them, and needed to move on to better things. They could only go up from there....product being the great music they've made afterwards.

as someone who has used the positive comments posted about me in my sig - I can offer an answer to at least why I used to do it---

1. sometimes it's to remind certain people who tend to say consistantly bad things about you - to the point of making you seem downright evil - lay off.

2. and most importantly - I think it is the ultimate thank you to the person that you quote - it shows them that you appreciate their comment so much you want others to see it.

I understand where you're coming from. I think part of my sensitivity to this stuff is the women in cages image, but another part is that when people find out I have gone to a Beasties concert, they still mention FFYR, and I hate that anyone would think I'm rocking out to that in 2005! I know they're just stupid, but it still gets to me sometimes.

I also think it's funny that so many guys I work with used to be BBs fans during the LTI era, and I sometimes think of them reading these articles way back when and thinking BBs were cool. And I wonder what their favorite songs were. One of my work friends actually gave me LTI last week, so I now own it.

It's just logical. Many BBs fans have good taste, and people with good taste love Dave Grohl, so many BBs fans will love Dave Grohl. :)

But if I were a teenage girl, I'd be waaaaaay into Taylor Hawkins instead!!! :D Plus he's one of the best live drummers I've ever seen.

as someone who has used the positive comments posted about me in my sig - I can offer an answer to at least why I used to do it---

1. sometimes it's to remind certain people who tend to say consistantly bad things about you - to the point of making you seem downright evil - lay off.

2. and most importantly - I think it is the ultimate thank you to the person that you quote - it shows them that you appreciate their comment so much you want others to see it.
You can pick your own signature line for sure. And I love funny ones no matter what they say.

But to me, it's like people at work who tell you how hard they work or how smart they are. They look really insecure, and it makes me kind of sad for them. Your worth should be obvious without you saying it all the time. I was thinking of this because it came up again today at work.

You might not be insecure. That's just how those kinds of signatures look to me. Others might see something else. I'm older than the average person here, as stated above. :)

I'm too late to edit my last post.

I would like to make clear that I don't care what anyone's signature says. I realize that most are intended to be funny or an inside joke and I enjoy the ones where I understand the humor. It's just that you see some signatures a lot and some get on my nerves for particular reasons. These are the "Documad is the coolest person on the board" variety. Sometimes it's obviously a joke and sometimes not. I had in mind the signature of someone who posts a lot and has had the same signature for months. He would never read this thread so it was a silly place to mention it.

I also had in mind the discussion we had just had at work. We had talked about how it's great that there are so many insecure people because they are so easily manipulated. It took me a long time to figure this out.

The other side of this is that women in the workplace sometimes have difficulty saying that they deserve something, or they have difficulty taking credit for something they actually did. Fewer men seem to have this problem. There's nothing wrong with saying "I wrote that" or "I got that client" or "I won that" when you really have the goods. Again, this doesn't belong in this thread, but I wanted to follow up what I couldn't take back.

Documad,

I just wanted to say here that I enjoy reading your posts a lot. If I see a thread by you or a post, I'm sure to read it. You have a nice style--one that doesn't insult others or make anyone feel stupid for asking questions, and you can do these things without compromising your own position. Nice. Thanks for that. I've said it in PMs, but I thought I'd say it here too because hey, you deserve it :) and I am still way too talky from putting in some kahluah last night on an empty stomach.

For the record, I never said I was offended by Yauch's comment. Do I think it's stupid? Yes. Do I believe "tits" is a derogatory term? Yes. Am I offended by Yauch's comment? No. Why? Because it's old crap.

Aren't "breasts" called by any other name still just "breasts"?

I understand that in your opinion "tits" is offensive...but I don't think its fair that you made it sound like everyone should think the same way,
(sorry if thats not the way you intended it to sound, but thats the impression I got).

There are so many different names given to breasts and other body parts, male or female, that I don't think there could be a majority rule of which words are ok to use and which ones aren't. I personally hate the word "c*nt", but know many other people who prefer it. I don't think differently about the people who choose to use the word, nor do I think they are "wrong" in doing so.

As for the quote in Brooklyn Babe's sig., I think its funny....but only because it is so stupid. I agree that it would probably benefit some to have it quoted, but on the other hand.......those who don't know enough to realize its a really old quote on their own, are probably the same people whose favorite album is LTI. So, how much would it help really?

Brooklyn Babe

I did not suggest that Brooklyn Babe remove her signature, as some of you have implied. I suggested that she credit it properly to avoid any question/confusion. As a writer, I believe it is essential to credit comments properly and not use them out of context because when you do, you can mislead the reader. I expressed my concerns for Brooklyn Babe to consider without placing any demands. I thought she might value the comments, considering she intends to be a journalist who will be required to credit comments properly.

It is true that I am working on a masters degree in journalism and it is also true that a key rule in journalism is properly quoting and crediting sources.

1. Yauch made the comment - whether it was in 87' or 05' is irrelevant.
He made this statement - exactly as I posted it.

2. the quote is not being taken out of context - because there is no context.
There is no overall tone to the article - there is no relevant information that precedes or follows the statement.
Taking something out of context would be if he made the statement and then followed it with something like "I'm joking" - or "I don't really mean that."
and I took only the first half.

He was making a flat out statement. Just as if I were to say: "I like men with brown eyes."

Taking something out of context means you exclude information thereby distorting or twisting it's meaning.

Is there anything in the article - any information at all - that makes anyone understand his comment any better?

Like if I posted the link under the quote in my sig - and any of you came here and read the article - would you say to yourself - "oh now I understand why he said it. Now it makes sense."

How is that comment misleading anyone - for all anyone knows - yauch still likes girls with big tits and what's wrong with that - nothing. You can respect a woman and still indicate in anyway you choose that you like her body. I don't know any woman that does'nt appreciate being told her body is attractive.

Also I'll use another example - Mike D. has said that he burned his penis on a furnace - does it matter that it was cold outside when he did it.
do you guys see how silly this is? ;)

I said I find the word derogatory, not offensive. Derogatory and offensive are not the same thing. Here are the definitions of the two words:

offensive: causing displeasure or resentment
derogatory: expressive of a low opinion

Where did I say I think everyone should think the same way as I do? Nowhere. Because I didn't say so. Please don't put words that I didn't say in my mouth.

I'm not concerned with language; I'm concerned with crediting/citing someone properly. I'm not sure why you're trying to steer this into a discussion about people's choices of words. I like colorful language. I use it often. Ask Wints. You should have seen the colorful language she used when she learned about the Mexico show cancellations! :p

Wow, thank you for providing me with those definitions because I sure did need them! You've clearly reminded me of how much of an idiot I am! Of course, maybe "stupid" is a better word....feel free to define them for me too, cause I don't know anything!

I'm sorry, but I've never known anyone to be so condecending! You know what I meant. I know what the difference between the two words are....you didn't have to make me feel like shit.

As for what I previously posted, it wasn't an attempt to "steer" the conversation into any new territory. I thought it was relavent.

I NEVER said you came right out and said that people should feel the same way that you do. Thats why I added the apology in advance in case my impression from what you were arguing was not what you intended. Of course, I'm sure you didn't even acknowledge that part! Otherwise you could have just said, "No, sorry you took it that way", instead of being so rude!

If you can't understand why I might get that impression, let me school you for a moment....because you have a really annoying habit of making people feel that way! (and there are many people on this board that will agree).

You know what the sad thing is M? That I really do respect you, very much, and I feel the same way about many of the things you are passionate about. In fact, I was agreeing with you over certain things. I just wish that instead of turning so many people off, that you could use your knowledge positively and maybe get more young people to consider feminisim literature, etc., and open their minds to more "progressive" thinking.

I really, really, didn't want to argue like this! I didn't have a problem with you.

I have one last thing to say about this then I'm leaving it alone.

You have removed the comment from its time and placed it in the present day without explanation.

I have not placed this quote in the present day - because there is nothing to indicate that it is recent.

99.9% of people on this board do not cite a year next to their quotes.

The problem lies not with the presentation of the quote it's with the content itself.

Sometimes when people disagree with something so avidly they look for anything that will explain it away.

It's as if one were to say - oh he said that in 1987 - he does'nt feel that way today - that changes things.

Yauch may still like girls with big tits - and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

when wints used "Mike D. is like whoa." - Adrock - as her sig - there was no year or media source cited - it's not neccesary -

if I used something like "I like cake" - Yauch 87' that would look rediculous.

Song lyrics used as sigs never have years next to them.

If I used yauch's lyric:

"Just doin those ladies all over the place
On the floor, in the back, and if I'm doin lack
Just a put 'em in a line layin on their back
And then I'll do them all one at a time "

do you think i would have to cite the song title and year.

You know what the real issue is - you don't want to believe that yauch made a statement like that and you certainly don't want to be reminded of the fact.

One of the most interesting things in the original article is what Yauch's dad says. "I could play the outraged parent, but I really find the Beastie Boys' whole put-on terrifically amusing. At home, Adam's a generous, caring, polite person. I'd be devastated by now if he was really like that."

I find this interesting because I don't remember seeing another article that was acually written during the LTI years that eluded to the fact that they were playing certain obnoxious roles. And followed that up by saying they were actually quite the opposite. :)

This is as condescending as anything that's been posted in this thread. And I can tell you it's not true at all. Please just stop this.

I am not trying to be condescending - I am trying to discuss the issue and come up with some logical explanation as to why my sig was singled out and not the tons of other people who quote old song lyrics or beastie statements.
M presented some ideas and thoughts and I'm doing the same - I think we are capable of discussing this in a reasonable way.

Come on! We have a history here. From this history, it's OBVIOUS that Kristen, Miramanee, and wints are all smart, articulate, and passionate women. Lord knows I am. :) We all have different life experiences and we all leap into these discussions and sometimes things get said that shouldn't. I'm sad that there appears to be a rift recently because I like hearing what you ALL say. I liked it better when we were buddies.

A fair amount of people on the board use or have used quotes by Yauch in their sigs. When I notice one, I sometimes ask, "Where the heck did he say that?" and look for the thread in which it occurred to understand the quote (because they are usually so weird that they require an explanation :D). Because he is an active member of the board, I think it's possible that anything quoted by him in a signature could be confused as a present-day comment. If he didn't post to the board, it would be a different matter.
There are no rules on this, but I agree that this would be the better practice. If someone quotes me in her signature (it's rare, but it happens :) ) it had better be something I actually posted on this board. I think it would suck if someone found something I wrote back in college and put it in her signature. I know that this is dicey because Yauch is both a Beastie Boy and a board member, but when I see a quote from him in a signature, it's usually something he actually posted, so that's what I would assume.

I agree! I thought that was a really interesting quote. I think Mike's mom has said some similar things, but not quite that directly.
Okay, I lied. I don't entirely pretend that Beastie Boys didn't exist prior to Paul's Boutique. I have a Q Magazine from the LTI era. And as soon as I start quoting from it, wints is going to pull out a thread where it was scanned. :) The article posted here seems to have lifted quotes from the longer article in Q. The Q article is called So Long Suckers! and it supposedly exposes the fact that the Beastie Boys are really mild mannered rich kids from good homes who say please and thank you (from the synopsis).

Yauch's dad "roars with laughter" at the idea that what they're doing is anything but an act. His dad's quote above in Laver's quote is word for word from that article. So is Mike's mom's Sinatra comment. In the Q article Mike's brother says "Mike's a real sweetheart at home." Their press officer says they're really nice boys and thus they can't keep up their act. He says "[t]hey can't help it; it's the way they've been brought up." Mike explains that it's difficult to keep up the act. There's a reference to the fact that they actually go to bed early with no girl action and don't drink before gigs. The Q article is a lot longer than the one here and in it Yauch doesn't discuss "tits." So the article in Just 17 or whatever it was called was probably cobbled together from a bunch of other sources and repackaged without anyone actually interviewing the band.

Now I heard that Beastie Boys had a history of trouble with the UK press, so maybe this Q article is a bunch of crap. Maybe they were bastards all along. :)

And on ebay, Australian items are in Australian dollars (and thus things are cheaper than they appear) and English items are in pounds (and thus are must more spendy than they appear). But I don't shop on ebay either. ;)

My full comment was:

I'm cringing because you quoted him out of context and didn't credit the quote, not because of Yauch's quote. By cutting my quote short, you changed the meaning. Quoting out of context.

ok - here's the whole post

This old crap written about them only illustrates how different they are now -- different for the better.

Brooklyn Babe, your signature makes me cringe. How about crediting the source and year of the quote (i.e., Just Seventeen, 1987), so you don't make Yauch look like a pig now? A person should be quoted in context.

Lord, that man has said some stupid shit in his life!

Now I'm going to tell Yauch that he should properly attribute his signature to Manties. :p

if you are cringing because:

I'm cringing because you quoted him out of context and didn't credit the quote, not because of Yauch's quote.
then why do you follow it up by saying:

Lord, that man has said some stupid shit in his life!
would'nt that indicate that part of your cringing was due to the actual statement itself?

Miramanee....

I'm not arguing with you. I don't see an argument happening. I see people expressing opinions. On this board if there is the slightest discord among members, a discussion is incorrectly labeled an argument. This is not an argument.
I know you didn't consider it an argument, as much as expressing different opinions, but I know that on my side I was "arguing" and was pissed off....and I unecessarily blew it out of proportion. I had no idea you "pull out dictionaries and definitions like a preacher pulls out passages from a Bible". :o
If you can't understand why I might get that impression, let me school you for a moment....because you have a really annoying habit of making people feel that way! (and there are many people on this board that will agree).
I shouldn't have said this, amongst other things, because it was really bitchy and it made me feel even worse. I'm not really a mean person and its not in my nature to be "pissed off" (at least not for long), but it is in my nature to right what I've wronged....so, I'm sorry.
If I've learned anything from these boards its that there are so many great people here, some I actually consider friends....and I don't want to spoil all the niceness with a bitchy attitude.

Brooklyn Babe, I just want to say thank you for the article, I enjoyed reading it. As for your signature, well your signature can be whatever you want it to be, I don't really think it's anyone's bussiness. I think it is rather funny that everyone takes everything so seriously on this message board, I actually find it bizzare in a sense, that everyone thinks they know the Beastie Boys and how they actually live and how they actually feel about everything, after all they are performers and have been for most of their lives. This is not to say that I don't believe that they have grown, blah, blah blah. I am a woman and the word tits does not bother me, there are so many other offensive things going on in the world that one little word, used by a 22 year old man (at the time,)does not bother me. And who knows maybe Yauch still uses the word tits in his private life, maybe he knows to be politicly correct in this day and age and not dare use the word tits in public. As Brooklyn Babe said much earlier, he's a guy and if she wants to quote something from along time ago what is the harm? Everyone needs to lighten up.

Now that this silly thread has been bumped by someone else, I'd like to say that I thought this was absolutely hilarious. It's funny how a thread can be heated and then everyone lightens up. :)

Thank you for your thoughtful, well-stated comment. (y) I appreciate it :D
