3 Feet High...is one of my favorite rap albums ever, but in terms of production, I think that Paul's Boutique was much more advanced for an album from the exact same year.

Shouldn't this debate be between P.B. and De La Soul Is Dead? It has alot more in common with Pauls Boutique, and nearly matches the complexity that the Dust Brothers infused into the Beasties sophmore[rap] album. But still not as good. I know this is a bandwagon view if ever there was one, but if not the best, Pauls Boutique is still my favorite rap album OF ALL TIME!!

weel they came around at the same time, they are both sampladelic as fuck, both groundbreaking, ahead of their time, dense production(but pb more but 3 is full of textures),melodic, original, innovative well this.3 is complex also,de la is dead a bit more, but 3 is also dense and melodic. And they are both milestones in music(anyay with 3 new sampling techniques has been introduced to hip-hop and music).

Both albums are amazing, groundbreaking albums.

To this day when I listen to PB I hear nuances in the production and the lyrics I never noticed before. PB stands the test of time better than 3 Feet. It still sounds fresh today where as 3 Feet sounds more dated to me.

It's funny because everyone was all up on 3 Feet in '89 while PB was ignored by most music listeners.

What artists/tunes did De La Soul sample on there? I really doubt that the amount of neat samples will be in the Paul's Boutique range, so until I see some of the sampled artists, I'll stick with what I know:

Music peaked with Paul's Boutique.

The fact that De La sampled Zeppelin's "The Crunge," Hall and Oates and Kraftwerk makes this a toughie...

I bought 3 ft today, and I love it, it's great. Extremely tough call on PB vs. 3 Ft, I think I'll have to get into 3 ft more before I can make that call.

Anyway, what I was wondering and thought you guys could help me, I was listening to 'Cool Breeze on the Rocks', which is a brilliant track, bout 50 seconds of samples from various songs with the word 'rock' in it, and it runs seamlessly. Anyway I thought I heard a Beastie Boys sample in there from LTI-ish era but I wasn't sure. I've been checking on the net, including this thread, but haven't found the info (or haven't been looking hard enough :p)

Anyway, the sample I'm talking about comes at about 0:25, and I think it says 'The King Adrock', as you would expect :p , not sure from what track though, maybe Beastie Groove.

Anyway, just checking, cheers.

I started to like 3 Feet High more and more lately, so I guess I would have to go with that. I still cannot get into Paul's Boutique at all. I don't know why, I just can't listen to it for more than 3 or 4 songs before turning it off.

3ft Feet High and Rising has moments where it's better than Paul's Boutique, but overall, I'd say PB is a better album.

Keep trying, its worth it! 3 Feet has more radio-friendly songs on it, its a bit lighter. Pauls Boutique is def harder to get into, especially when you're younger. I don't know what age you are...

Anyway's a 'making of 3FHAR' article appeared in Hip-Hop Connection (UK) mag recently, by Angus Batey. He wrote the BBoys book Rhymin And Stealin. Part of the article was a repeat of something he wrote (and I posted) before, how Prince Paul met the Beasties and they said they were mad at them when it came out, it stole their thunder sort of.

Hip-Hop Connection always has lots of Beastie Boys mentions for some reason, prob cos of Angus Batey.
