BBC article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4315075.stm)
Portraits of nearly all of the 1,500 US troops killed in Iraq are going on display at a New York state university.
The pictures, mostly painted by art students, stare down from a 60m (200ft) wall at Syracuse University.
"It's not about the war or politics. It's about these people who have given their lives," said Stephen Zaima, a professor at the university.
According to AP news agency, the number of US servicemen and women killed in Iraq reached 1,500 on Thursday.
However, domestic US support for the war appears to have been buoyed by the success of Iraq's elections in January.
A New York Times/CBS News poll released on Thursday said 53% felt efforts to bring order to Iraq were going well, up from 41% a month ago.

so didn't this conflict end over a year ago?
1500 people... that's a lot of dead men and women.

I for one am thankful for all the men and women who serve. (y)
They are the ones who ensure the rights that some of us hold so dearly.

racer-
what rights has the u.s. defended by sending those 1500 people to their death? And this does not even bring into account the counless thouseands of Iraqis killed in this occupation.
Tell me what rights the U.S. is protecting in this latest "conflict"?

in this particular case: 70% the right to get some oil.... 30% the spread of demcracy into a strategic location (wait, is that a "right"?).
oh wait, you wanted Racer to answer....sorry.

Well, for starters our rights as a nation.
I do not totally agree with the war, but I do not see a better alternative.
Remember, it is other Iraquis (insurgents) killing the majority of these people not U.S. troops.
In the grand scheme of things, 1500 people is not alot when it comes to war.
45,000 people die every year due to car accidents
850,000 children are aborted each year.
Where is your bleeding heart for those people.

explain....
Remember, it is other Iraquis (insurgents) killing the majority of these people not U.S. troops.
first....the insurgents are not (necessarily) iraqi...that's why they are called insurgents (from neighboring countries).
second, while the insurgents have killed many iraqi's, even i must admit that US troops have killed many many many more....the numbers aren't even comprable.
In the grand scheme of things, 1500 people is not alot when it comes to war.
that's cold.

our right to invade and occupy a nation that has a resource we want? that's not a right any nation deserves.
Q addressed your other insurgents argument.

this is hardly a comparison. especailly because we are at war to get oil to run those cars.
and the aborted children are not people yet, so I shed no tears for them. Instead I shed tears for the females that cannot take care to avoid unwanted pregnencies.
1500 dead is not alot... tell that to any number of family members who have lost a loved one.

Yah it's about people who have given their lives, in a war, because of politics.
Idiot.
Anyways, WHO CARES!?
Not me.

They are all in a better place now.....
1,500 decided to die for a lie.
100,000 + didn't decide SHIT.

They are the ones who ensure the rights that some of us hold so dearly.
Indeed, like the "right to live free from fear of violence" that both our nation's leaders have talked up. Oh, but hang on, these are the same people who have been murdering Iraqis.
Or maybe you mean the right to peace and prosperity? Oh hang on, the US army has managed to deprive the Iraqis of both of those.
Or maybe you mean the right to free-speech? Oh yes, the yanks blew up several independant reporters in Iraq...
Feh...

Debating people here is fruitless, they're like a pack of apes grouped together grunting out slogans. I only do what I do so they know there's people who recognize that most of them are hypocritical phonies that surround themselves with like minded people. Say what you want about me: Am I an a-hole? You bet. You won't offend me though I can assure you of that.

not being a liberal (by the accepted definition), i am often at odds with many of the peeps on this board.
i'm annoyed my most of em, most of the time.....and vice-versa.
yet i still enjoy the debate...and the contrast of ideas....
and i think that many of them (even if they don't want to admit it) appreciate me on some level anyway...
i can tell you that coming on here trolling for a bit then scampering away does NOT have the effect you wish it to.
all it does is galvanize the liberals on this board...and further the stereotype of non-liberals such as yourself.
why not engage in debate?
stand up and speak....stop taking pot-shots and running away....

i am impressed with the way the bush administration can all but ignore the rising death toll, and instead focus on improtant things like their social security private account idea, which, according to a NY Times poll, 51% of americans think is a horrible idea.
by ignoring it, do they think u.s. troops will stop dying?

Let's discuss the topic in the thread title. You happy about all those dead Americans (not to mention the dead and homeless Afghanistanis, Iraqis, Palestinians, Israelis, etc.) Are you for or against the presence of US and UK forces in the Middle East. our right to invade and occupy a nation that has a resource we want? that's not a right any nation deserves.
I think it would have been cheaper to drill in Alaska, if oil is all we are after.
Regardless of what war in times past, there is always an agenda.
and the aborted children are not people yet, so I shed no tears for them.
Tell that to the woman who is carrying the child.
Instead I shed tears for the females that cannot take care to avoid unwanted pregnencies.
Do you shed tears for the women who throw their unwanted babies into the trash? Or what about the woman who had her child by the ankles beating it's head on a sidewalk?
I guess you would say, "Hey if they had an abortion, none of this would happen."
In order to fix the problem you have to go to the source. In an age of society where condoms or birth control pills are in abundance, I don't understand the problem. It is like planning to go ice skating, you don't without the proper equipment.

well, except the oil reserves in alaska are not for certain. The oil in Iraq is known and mapped and already tapped. Plus a strategic military base in that area would only help u.s. global domination.
Do you shed tears for the women who throw their unwanted babies into the trash? Or what about the woman who had her child by the ankles beating it's head on a sidewalk?
no, if abortions were free and available for all women whenever, then none of that would happen.
I guess you would say, "Hey if they had an abortion, none of this would happen."
you're right, I did say that.
In order to fix the problem you have to go to the source. In an age of society where condoms or birth control pills are in abundance, I don't understand the problem.
the problem is the pill and birthcontrol are not free. only in rare cases does any sort of program give away birth control and generally it's a condom. but I agree with you, in order to fix the problem you go to the source. We need to educate the public on safe sex and how to use consdoms and all that jazz. but luckliy, in neo-puritan usa, sex ed is taboo and not allowed to be taught except with extreme fighting with the gov't. When Bush took office the first time, the first thing he did was remove all funding GLOBALLY for any social program whose foucus was sex ed, HIV, and/or the prevention of diesease and unwanted pregnancy IF said preogram did not teach ABSTINANCE ONLY. so i agree racer, we should start with the source, education. And the current administration is against education. Let's impeach him.
...But we are at war, not a picnic.
Why are we at war again? oh yeah, oil and lies...
