View Full Version : Thoughts on 50 Cent's "Massacre"

I'm not the biggest 50 fan, but I don't mind his music, at times. Anyways, here's what I think of the official joint:
First of all, the cover (http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/rnnr/massacre.html) of The Massacre is probably one of the gayest things I've seen in quite a long time. I get the impression that when 50 saw the impending cover art, he decided to take it upon himself to add some more definition and size to his physique with a jiffy marker. Meanwhile, the folks in charge of the art direction were just like, "Sure, that looks awesome, dude".
Apart from the weak cover, I think that the album itself has it's moments. Especially if you don't mind entertainment of the lowest common denominator, every now and then. At this point in his career, it's obvious 50 has no plans to return to his pre "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" style, which was a lot less pop-oriented.
Overall, I can't really knock the production too much. A lot of the beats are done by no names, and some of them craft beats that are just as memorable (or more so) than the ones cooked up by big names. Apparently, 50 opted to select most of his beats from upstarts, with minimal input from Dre, after deciding that the heads at Aftermath/Interscope were puttin a lot more effort into The Game's debut than his own album. The beats, while far from outsatnding, are still probably the album's strongest asset.
As far as the vocals go...c'mon man, it's 50. I don't think anyone's really expecting to hear ample wordplay or something with actual emotional resonance make it's way out of this guy's mouth. It's the same old same old. There's very little in the way of growth here. The guest appearances are kept to a minimal, with no real surpirses popping up, apart from the usual suspects; G-Unit, Eminem and a few obscure R&B crooners.
The biggest drawback to the set would have to be the redundant and not so varying themes in his rhymes. It's the usual guns, girls, money and drugs talk. He spends the majority of the album bragging about his prodigious stranglehold on the rap market, which ironically has been at the root of the 50 backlash that's grown increasingly uncontested. It doesn't help that 50 hasn't got very many friends in the industry left, either. Even the album's semi-anticipated diss track, aimed at Nas, Shyne, Jadakiss and Fat Joe (Piggy Bank) is nothing more than a couple of underwhelming throwaway verses on top of a more or less lifeless beat.
If you aren't a fan of 50's choice of subject matter, his sing-songy hooks and generally formulaic approach to making music, this album won't do much to change your mind. Overall, the choice of topics isn't exactly brain candy, but if the beats on 'Disco Inferno', 'Just A Little Bit' and the pretty lyrically retarded 'Get In My Car' don't at least cause your head to bob even a little bit, you're just too serious about your music to enjoy it.

I haven't downloaded it yet (yeah, that's right... I said it), but I heard it's absolute crap from a ton of people. Even a few of them that actually like the guy. Don't ask me why I associate with them in the first place, it's just how the cookie crumbles.
Having said that, I'll probably download it later.

Yesterday, I was sitting in English class when a girl, out of nowhere, loudly said "Hey everyone, do yourself a favor and don't buy the new fifty Cent album. It's crap; I thought I was getting a great deal, but now I feel ripped off."
Naturally, I scoffed and said "Well, duh, what'd you expect? It's new; listen to stuff made prior to '89!"

Maybe some of you people need to experience music outside of the confines of your bedroom or your headphones once in a while. Nobody said 50 made "thinking people's music". But damn, do you people ever dumb down for a second, stop concentrating so hard, hit a club and have a drink every now and then? I'm not just referring to 50 Cent, but accessible mainstream pop shit in general...

Don't know if this was aimed directly at me or not, but...
Oh I am plenty capable of "dumbing down," but Fiddy is hardly my cup o' coke. I've hit the Top 40 clubs where they play the exact same thing everytime I show up (I hear Usher when I walk in and then less than an hour later... I hear Usher AGAIN  ), and I'm sorry, I just don't feel it.
I dig going to the clubs where they play mostly the same shit I hear in my bedroom and on the headphones (The Smiths, Blur, Electric Six, The Who, The White Stripes, The Cure, Le Tigre, The Streets) and it's hella fun to dance to them and see plenty of hotties doing the same. :)
If there's something in the "mainstream accessible pop shit" I like, I'll speak up and say so (some Timberlake solo songs I don't mind, par example).

You can blame Viacom for advertising him as the hip hop Jesus Christ. Also 50 for believing his own manufactured hype. I don't really respect anything purely on the fact that it moves asses in a club. You pop on Tagteam and it will probably get more asses on the floor than In Da Club.

i heard one of his many shitty songs on the radio yesterday and his singing/rapping is literally pop music. it should not even be classified as rap or hip hop. even his beats arent hip hop. there hip pop, at best. they are more hip hop oriented than him on the track but still not hip hop to me.
granted there needs to be club tracks, but i think 95% of his arent even good enough for that.

What i find 'interesting' is that fifty cent was well capable of rapping without the closed mouth and spitting (literally, now) after he was being shot up. He did one song in the style he does now on his undergound work. Eminem or Dr Dre liked it and now he raps allt he time like this. Okay, if he likes that thats fine. But why OOO WHY does that "steroid pumped IQ below 40 guy" aka 'fiddy cent' talk like that even in interviews where i cannot, i really tried to, understand him.
50 cent is a blown up hype about 1 guy talkin without moving his mouth. Some of his songs are not bad, indeedy. But when the thorough production team leaves him for a second, (G-Unit album Beg for mercy) his songs are shite.
Although i must give him 'mad big up respect' that he can rhyme any random word with another random word. Yeah, you try to rhyme Speakerbox with shoelaces; 50 manages it!
Cheers,
Maurits

I'll let you lick the lollypop
Go 'head girl, don't you stop
Keep going 'til you hit the spot (woah)
[Olivia]
I'll take you to the candy shop
Boy one taste of what I got
I'll have you spending all you got
Keep going 'til you hit the spot (woah)
[Verse 1: 50 Cent]
You can have it your way, how do you want it
You gon' back that thing up or should i push up on it
Temperature rising, okay lets go to the next level
Dance floor jam packed, hot as a teakettle
I'll break it down for you now, baby it's simple
If you be a nympho, I'll be a nympho
In the hotel or in the back of the rental
On the beach or in the park, it's whatever you into
Got the magic stick, I'm the love doctor
Have your friends teasin you 'bout how sprung I gotcha
Wanna show me how you work it baby, no problem
Get on top then get to bouncing round like a low rider
I'm a seasons vet when it come to this shit
After you broke up a sweat you can play with the stick
I'm tryin to explain baby the best way I can
I melt in your mouth girl, not in your hands (ha ha)
[Chorus]
[Bridge: 50 Cent & Olivia]
Girl what we do (what we do)
And where we do (and where we do)
The things we do (things we do)
Are just between me and you (oh yeah)
[Verse 2: 50 Cent]
Give it to me baby, nice and slow
Climb on top, ride like you in the rodeo
You ain't never heard a sound like this before
Cause I ain't never put it down like this
Soon as I come through the door she get to pullin on my zipper
It's like it's a race who can get undressed quicker
Isn't it ironic how erotic it is to watch em in thongs
Had me thinking 'bout that ass after I'm gone
I touch the right spot at the right time
Lights on or lights off, she like it from behind
So seductive, you should see the way she wind
Her hips in slow-mo on the floor when we grind
As Long as she ain't stoppin, homie I aint stoppin
Drippin wet with sweat man its on and popping
All my champagne campaign, bottle after bottle its on
And we gon' sip til every bubble in the bottle is gone
[Chorus]
Deep, emotional, profound, breaking down the walls of racism, sexism, and all stereotypes. A meaningful verse in the advancement of the black culture.
