I just ordered a kit to grow wheatgrass. It will come with instructions but not a juicer. Do any of you juice your own wheatgrass? If so, I was wondering if you had suggestions on how to take care of it, and how to juice it, like what kind of machine I need and where to get it. Something not too expensive because I don't need a big industrial sized one, it's just for me.

I used to -- go to wild oats or whatever health food chain you have in town and they should have an affordable juicer. since you are doing wheatgrass, you can have a smaller one. it is so healthy for you. nice lifestyle move!!!
The grass is very easy to grow and keep up on. put it in a window dont water it too much. remember it is a grass so it will naturally grow easilly.

i'm thinking of starting to do that. i wouldn't grow it myself, because we get it in at my store twice a week for pretty cheap. you can get some pretty cheap ones that are hand-cranked, but that gets tiring. the electric ones are much easier, but kinda hard to clean, and they can get expensive. i've seen some models selling for thousands of dollars.

my bro does and its pretty basic just get some potting mix put it in a pot and plant your cracked wheat....make sure u buy CRACKED WHEAT and not the other one whatever its called cause the other one (which loooks the same but is not cracked) won't sprout (grow).
You just have to water it keep it in the sun, on a window sill would be good depending on what ur climates there, don't let the frost/snow get it...it doesn't take very long to grow and it's really simple.
I have a tonne of it at home with potting mix that i keep intending to plant but haven't got around to it yet
my bro just uses a hand held blender to mix it up...ads a little water..but then he drinks like 400-500mls at a time.... most people just go for a shot....i dont know if u noticed i wrote this in another thread but my bros an athlete and within the first week of him drinking the wheatgrass everyday he knocked like 5seconds of his PB (which is a lot for someone that trains 6 days a week and is pretty much at his physical peak)
Anyways goodluck, if i can do it so can u i killed everyplant (im pretty confident i can grow wheat-grass though it is only grass afterall) i ever owned so far though..i had some herbs on my window sill that were doing alright but i had some white vinigar in a glass left over from when i was cleaning something and i thought it was water and poured in on my poor herbs :( they died. As long as u don't do that you'll be fine (y)

im sorry ((e-hugs)) i always come across like im attacking people and i guess if i wanted to i could try harder not too but i think its cause im actually a SUPER nice person in real life and go out of my way to avoid conflict and confrontation and im absoloutly the most un-intimidating person u'd ever meet. i think the internets like my yang..im a bit obnoxious on here..which is unfair to the people that its directed towards.. but it just balances out my character. does that even make sense

jesus christ. i'm not attacking every one of your posts. i was just pointing out something. but really, why should i give any respect to someone that's been so abraisive and rude to so many people? like when i just said "ms. peachy's not conceited" and you replied with "okay queen cosmo." what the hell was that about? nobody's kissing my ass here. there's no need for the rudeness you've displayed.
yes, it is a type of grass. but it's not your average lawn sod or whatever. it's nutritious, and frankly it makes you feel good to drink it.

but in terms of growing it, which was the context i was using..it IS the same as grass. Like i said u seem to have difficulty with comprehension.
And like you're never rude to people, come on cos, be real here.
in one of my very first posts here you wrote to me 'jesus christ settle down' just cause i was expressing my opinion..is that not rude? I didn't hold that against you and have not attempted to attack you until you made several insidiously nasty remarks towards me.
At least I can admit when I"m wrong. Which is why i wrote a message to the board in paulyp's thread and also why I just clarifyed my position to licorish donut in this thread. And you always call me out on ambiguous things that are subject to personal opinion... like 'this coversation is pointless' and 'miss peachy is not conceited' and 'wheat grass is not trendy'. That's just gay.

hellojello
03-08-2005, 02:30 PM
So does it need some kind of hydroponic soil? And what about mold? Is mold a problem?
mould will only be a problem if you over water... one thing u have to be aware of is that if u grow too much at once..like more than u can use.. it will grow really 'tough' (& possibly even go to seed) and not as supple as its young grass...in the same way baby peas/carrots are sweeter than regular peas/carrots.
hydroponic soil? hydroponics is when you grow things in water. Regular soil will do fine. U can get seasol which is a natural fertilizer made from seaweed (non-toxic) which will add to the nutrients but it's really not neccesary it should grow just fine without it.
PS COS - u know its pointless cuz u know i'm right just admit it, it's not going to kill u. A bit of humility would probably do u some good.

And I doubt I'll be using much at once, especially since people who are new to it should start with small doses. I read that you have to drink it immediately after juicing or it loses significant potency. I somehow don't think a blender would work for grass. I'm comparing juicers online and there are various kinds of juicers made for extracting juice from different things. Some won't work on grasses and leaves like spinach. I am SO going to drink spinache! :D Umm, anyway, yes. So some crank slowly and that gives you less foam and heat.
Centrifugal Juicers are great at juicing most any fruit or vegetable, but do not extract juice from wheatgrass, leafy greens, or herbs.
Masticating Juicers use a single gear or auger that literally chews fruit and vegetable fibers and breaks up the plant cells, resulting in more fiber.
Triturating (Twin-Gear) Juicers turn at even slower speeds, resulting in even less oxidation from foam and less destruction of nutrients from heat. Twin gear juicers operate by pressing food between two interlocking roller gears. This process yields a larger volume of juice and extracts more fiber, enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals. Twin gear juicers do more than just extract juice, they homogenize to make baby foods, nut butters, fruit sorbets and many have attachments for making pasta and rice cakes.
Wheatgrass Juicers are made exclusively for extracting the juice from wheatgrass and other leafy greens, as well as some soft fruits like grapes. Wheatgrass juicers are not made for extracting juice from vegetables and most fruits.
The Twin Gear kind sounds like the best deal.

ok fine $22 that isn't so bad i imagined it would have been more expensive but then i imagine it's just a plastic container with some dirt and seeds so i suspose it really isn't worth that much. I guess i was lucky cuz my pares know how to grow it and just told me.
something just occured to me though..and im going to sound like a hypocrit so go one people tell me that i am..but my bro does mix up a fair quantity of that stuff at a time..and drinks it all at once anywhere between 300-500mls of it... he does ad water too (just a little) which would help with the blending but what occured to me was if your'e not prepared to drink that much of it, cause that is a lot, and also since u said it doesn't keep (i didn't know that) after its blended MAYBE u do need one of them wheat grass blenders after all (lb) i do know i won't be bothering paying $50US for a wheatgrass blender though whether u need it or not, I"m stingy i'll make it work, it would probably be cheaper to make up more than u need using the cheap blender(Since the seed is hellishly cheap anyways) and just throw out what u don't use

some people find that adding a few drops of tabasco sauce makes the wheatgrass shot more palatable....personally, i think wheatgrass tastes great and it's a wonderful shot of energy for the body.
from all i've heard (from people working at juice bars) good wheat grass extractors are extremely expensive and you are only supposed to use a tray of grass for one clipping....apparently, if you keep growing the grass the nutrients aren't as potent? at any rate, i used to bring used trays home from a juice bar i frequented and my cats would go nuts on them....they loved eating the leftover grass and rolling around on the trays. natural intoxicant?

Well, I started growing my wheatgrass and hellojello you were right I could do it in anything and I found a store that sells the red winter wheat seeds. I guess the soil is super fantastic but still I bet any potting soil from a garden store would work. And any mason jar for sprouting. Put it in the d'oh files.
Anyway, I sprouted some seeds and put them with the dirt and they are growing little shoots. I don't have a juicer, I just eat the grass. It isn't bad it's tastey like salad greens. I don't know if you can do that, but what the hell.

Is wheatgrass the same as ordinary wheat?
I got loads of wheat seeds from my classmate years ago because cats love it.
Now I needed some plants for the fair quickly (cause my other plan(t)s didn't succeed) so now I have loads of grown wheat. I've got both a juicer and a handmixer, I was gonna try to juice it today, but then I was "too busy" with other stuff. I hope the grass don't grow too much, it is starting to get yellow on the tops now...

It might be okay if you trim it and only juice the bottoms. But wheatgrass used for juicing is usually, from what I've seen, red winter wheat. Not any other wheat. Other than that, it's basically just wheat. The grass.

I was worried about that because they say it's a powerful laxative. I haven't noticed anything so far except a burning sensation in my stomach, not my lower stomach like my intestines, just like a hot pinch of whiskey type of burning in my upper stomach. Heartburn maybe? I've only eat small amounts though. If I ate enough then imagine it would make me gassy because any raw veggies do that to me if I eat enough of them.
