A Day in the Life, just as I said.
I think I deserve some credit here, too, for I'm the one with the definitive reasoning for what makes a song epic.
mickill500: he thinks it's ...
mickill500: guess
DipDip628: did he say the golden slumbers suite?
mickill500: haha
mickill500: no
DipDip628: strawberry fields?
mickill500: yeah
mickill500: which is close
mickill500: but no
mickill500: Trashy McVulture: who cares what she thinks?
mickill500: you do
Trashy McVulture: its not like her opinion matters or anything
DipDip628: strawberry fields is one of my absolute favorite beatles songs of all time
DipDip628: but I wouldn't classify it as epic
DipDip628: epic songs have to have varying segments
DipDip628: like stairway to heaven
DipDip628: where it's almost like 4 or 5 songs in one
mickill500: exactly, lara
DipDip628: yes, I know.

I've re-discovered "here comes the sun" while playing some beatles vinyl from when I was a kid.
Nothing to do with your debate but I just felt like mentioning that.

And all this time I thought we had very similar taste in music. What with us liking all the same Hendrix songs and all etc.
So anyways it's like 30 to 2 here, with don vaughn atari and Futterman being the only ones to choose Strawberry Fields...and Brabs not making much sense again.

Beatles and their abstract songs. Fuckers. Day in the Life mainly for these lyrics,
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

Have you ever seen the movie? It's....wow.
Anywho, I like Strawberry Fields much more, but I would have to say that A Day in the Life is the more epic of the two.

Between those two: A Day in the Life, no contest. And frankly the only reason to listen to that album.
But I'd pick Mean Mr. Mustard/Polythene Pam/She Came in Through the Bathroom Window/Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight/The End.

...I don't think "Strawberry Fields" is epic at all, actually, so, of those two, I'd say "A Day in the Life."
But, as DroppinScience pointed out (and was the first thing I thought of) -- "Revolution #9" is pretty surely their most epic. Not because of length ("Hey Jude" is no epic) but because of the scope and journey.
I wish I remembered "In My Life" better; I wonder if it would qualify.

I don't know, I just can't think of a two and a half minute song as epic. I love the song, but it's just not very grand in scope or dimension, or in execution. It's still a favorite, though.
Revolution #9 isn't very epic to me. It's just kind of a mess. I don't think there really was any rhyme or reason to how it was pieced together. It doesn't actually build or go anywhere, really. I think of it as a long drawnout sound collage and nothing more really.
I would nominate Happiness Is A Warm Gun as sort of the best mini epic. And I agree with Documad about the side 2 medley from Abbey Road. It's monumental.

A day in the life.
I liked watching the story around that one on the Beatles Anthology. I love the sound and mood of that song.

ima have to agree with this actually. Sometimes I say revolver other times I say magical mystery. I dont know....as far as the two songs go though A Day In The Life is the better of the two.

Magical Mystery Tour was originally just a double EP with only:
Magical Mystery Tour
The Fool On The Hill
Flying
Blue Jay Way
Your Mother Should Know
When it was released in The States Capitol added 3 singles that had dropped the same year to the package to make it a complete album:
Hello Goodbye b/w I Am The Walrus
Penny Lane b/w Strawberry Fields Forever
All You Need Is Love b/w Baby You're A Rich Man
But The Beatles themselves never recorded MMT as an album. It's hard to consider it a proper album since songs like Strawberry Fields could have just as easily been added to Sgt Peppers. Or something...

Sort of off-topic, but thought it would still be O.K. to put this here
For the George Harrison fans, check out this track put together by one of the members of that other forum I'm always yakking about: Liverpool by way of Nashville (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=51439&page=1&pp=20) :)
Hope he (and his ISP) don't mind! He's a studio engineer who posts there a lot and he put this together himself as the thread describes. Sounds good to me. (y)

Also off topic, but the George Harrison tribute concert Eric Clapton put together for George's wife and son is an awesome DVD. And I hate DVD concerts. And I'm not a big Clapton fan.
There are some good tunes and performances, as well as a couple of moments that make me a little misty-eyed.

Is that the dvd called "Song For George"?
BTW: speaking of not enjoying dvd concerts: I bought 311's New Orleans double-dvd (my first concert dvd actually) and have only gotten through 1 disc so far. There's nothing wrong with the performances, the sound, camera worrk etc but I just can't seem to get into it. I finally burned out on the big arena concerts in the mid 90s--maybe that has something to do with it. :(

It's "Concert for George" I think. It's on loan to a friend right now. But the Monty Python guys are in it too and it was filmed at Albert Hall. (I bought it because Eric Idle mentioned it at a show.) Forward past the opening 45 minutes of sitar music and then it gets good.
You forget that he actually wrote some good songs. And his son who looks just like him plays guitar with the crowd so it's kind of appropriate.
