Abrasive music. Les Savy Fav and Shellac. Everyone says they're good, and when I'm listening to them and paying attention, I can tell these bands are talented, but I don't like playing their songs just to play them for sitting around the house or while driving because they're kind of abrasive.

The thing about Shellac is that all their songs start out great, with good bass lines. Then the guitar gets repetitive and high pitched, the drums bang harder and Albini (?) starts singing and I start feeling assaulted. Maybe I'm old. I can't follow Shellac's music. It reminds me of what the alien kids on an episode of Star Trek the next generation would be blasting in his special quarters when some member of the crew walks in and we know it's super futuristic, other world music. I like them anyway. I don't know if you'd call it punk or hard rock or what.

Les Savy Fav is a little more predictable and therefor slightly catchier, but still high pitched, repetitive guitars. Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth can do the same thing but sound softer somehow. You know what? Now that I think about it, Sonic Youth is pretty abrasive too. I don't really like Sonic Youth that much. There. I said it. I don't really like Sonic Youth. Never cared much for them. Gosh, it feels good to type that out loud.

I see where you're coming from on Les Savy Fav and Sonic Youth (not familiar with Shellac). They have to appreciated on a different level than most other bands (i.e. they're not for every mood or mindset).

But I'd still say they're pretty darn good! (y)

it took me a while to get shellac. and i still dont think i do completely. but it is slowly falling into place. everytime i listen to one of their albums, another song falls into place. i feel kinda wrong though, like i am appreciating them on the wrong level. i treat them as pop music...y'know...singing along, dancing, playing air drums and the like. most people seem to just nod their head and then shout abuse in between songs.
if you like shellac, but are not so keen on the abrasive-ness, have a look at el hombre trajeado (http://www.elhombre.co.uk/).

more abrasive though is big black. still got albinis nasty nasty guitar sound, but the lyrics are nasty, and there is a drum machine instead of a drummer which obviously brings out a harsher, more military feeling to the rhythm.

You know who else is abrasive but in an entirely different way? The Dresden Dolls. It's like, banshee wailing piano banging. Coin Operated Boy is the exeption.
