Under Bush, a New Age of Prepackaged Television News

8 page story on fake news.

Story Sunday NYTimes, 3/13/05 Link (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/13/politics/13covert.html?hp&ex=1110776400&en=c0b6bad84e5bf46a&ei=5094&partner=homepage)

Under the Bush administration, the federal government has aggressively used a well-established tool of public relations: the prepackaged, ready-to-serve news report that major corporations have long distributed to TV stations to pitch everything from headache remedies to auto insurance. In all, at least 20 federal agencies, including the Defense Department and the Census Bureau, have made and distributed hundreds of television news segments in the past four years, records and interviews show. Many were subsequently broadcast on local stations across the country without any acknowledgement of the government's role in their production.

The Pentagon Channel, available only inside the Defense Department last year, is now being offered to every cable and satellite operator in the United States. Army public affairs specialists, equipped with portable satellite transmitters, are roaming war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq, beaming news reports, raw video and interviews to TV stations in the United States. All a local news director has to do is log on to a military-financed Web site, www.dvidshub.net (http://www.dvidshub.net/), browse a menu of segments and request a free satellite feed.

Major news affiliates say time restraints and budget are the reason for more and more of these reports popping up on your news.

Our tax money is being spent on spin of how our tax money is being spent, sounds almost like a conflict of interest, eh?

The continuing proliferation of "fake news" paid for by the citizens of our country (USA) is the most dangerous develoment of the GWB administration, the first amendment is becoming a wholesale whore for political gain and persuasion.

If media continues to under report and society continues to not understand, we as a collective citizenship are going to say, "Bye, Bye" to Freedom. It is really, really happening.

From Michael Peroutka,

The Preamble of the 1992 Republican Party Platform said, in part:

"Abraham Lincoln, our first Republican President, expressed the philosophy that inspires Republicans to this day: 'The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities. But in all that people can individually do as well for themselves, Government ought not to interfere.’"

But, this view is a prescription for unlimited, un-Constitutional, tyrannical Government, precisely the kind of Government we have today under the control of the Republicans.

Nuts isn't it. I'm just happy to finally see a Front Page news story on this invasion by our goverment on the first amendment rights, the real problem is the populance is ignorant on what is happening. Standing up and telling GWB et;al STOP is what is needed. This is not public relations, it is Pravda (http://english.pravda.ru/), which looks eerily close to USA Today.

At a guess, it is because your countrymen prefer to use their right to bear arms to run around pretending to be an army in the hick-militia and participating in high-school shootings and gang-crime, rather than actually using it to deal with your tyrannical government.

It matters not what they do anymore... No one is accountable, no one has to be.. They report it; just to let us know that they are on top of things, but that's where it stops... I mean yeah, they tell us there are investigations, but is anyone held accountable? No, not at all. Some low level expendable flunkies? Sure, they mean nothing. All this stuff going on and no one in a higher position of power knows anything about it? Are we morons? Well, maybe we here aren't, but a shocking number of people ARE. Do they actually believe "The Rapture" is upon us? Or do they just have confidence in the stupidity of the American people? I spend a good hour or two a day pondering the flood of spin in our country and it really gets to me.... As Popeye would say "I can't stands no more". We are no more then sheep in the eyes of our arrogant leaders. They have their agendas and use our money to pursue them. It won't stop either. Our value to them as consumers is the only thing that keeps us all alive and well. Well, as well as we can be with all the poisons they feed us on a daily basis. Got to keep us going to the doctor and getting prescriptions now don't they? Just more money sent down the capitalist tube better not spent at all. Keep us all in debt and paying our taxes while they send our young people off to die in a war that has had MULTIPLE different rationales. Can you fucking imagine that? There reasons kept getting debunked for going to war and they just simply changed them and the American people were alright with that. Alright enough to vote this fucker back into office. It's as if I went to bed one night and woke up in Bizarro world. I don't understand it. I try to remain objective. I try to believe some of the propaganda that comes out in the mainstream media just so I don't have to worry about it anymore, but the common sense part of my mind just kicks me in the ass for it. It's not possible to swallow such oddly shaped pills. Every time I hear someone say that George Bush is a good president (which isn't often) I wonder what drug one could take to make one so delusional. I'm sorry all I am a bit drunk and just started writing. Forgive my Grammar. i usually try to make it more readable with paragraphs and such.

"What are government-funded fake newscasts?
Under President Bush, at least 20 different federal agencies have produced "prepackaged, ready-to-serve" reports that are distributed to hundreds of television stations, such as Fox 13 in Memphis, TN or WCIA 3 in Champaign, IL. These reports are often broadcast on television news programs without disclosing that the segments are produced and paid for by the US federal government."

I am amazed that an actual story about raping the first amendment by those who are paid to protect it made the front page, but this is NYC and they tend to be bluish liberals.

D_Raay actually made a very sober post for somebody who was drunk, the observation he makes is clear. No administration went to this extent in exploiting the media, GWB and crew must of thought, "Hey, let's give it a try, afterall we own the courts ;) ". They do it because they can, the media so far has given them permission. It's happening on a much larger scale than many believe, media is just one facet, but a very powerful one.

BTW, from what movie does that NSA audio clip come from? GoodWillHunting

If they would have had there way we would have stayed out of World war II and you would be speaking german right now. As our evil capitalist system created all the ships, tanks, oil, food and ammo that was used b your country in the war (see lend lease act).-

Yeah you're right Ace. It's amazing people as stupid as this are able to form complete sentences, and manage to avoid their own death on a daily basis.
