View Full Version : Hip Hop Groups That Seemed To Disappear

I remember during the late 80’s and early 90’s every record label was trying to cash in on the success of hip hop music and some groups that seemed to stand out from the crowd would release an album or two then simply got buried under the landslide of new artists coming out at the time. What I want to know is…

…where the hell are these guys now? It’s like they vanished off the face of the earth. They were in love with their music one minute and they had nothing to do with it the next minute. For Example:

Fu-Schnickens- Two albums, a greatest hits collection and one solo song, then never heard from again

The UMC’s- A brilliant debut album followed by a so-so sophomore effort, then gone for ever.

Chubb Rock- Talented MC with 3 or 4 albums who stayed active in the game with the occasional guest spot but ultimately vanished.

Some groups like Digable Planets for example managed to stay musically active after their breakup, and in their case are even working on a reunion, but others are simply gone. What are some of the groups/artists that you wish would resurface?

The recording industry is evil. Notice how most of them disappeared during the same time period, 95' - 96'. I don't think its a coincidence.

the chubbster got his masters in biology and now works at one of the rap radio stations here.

i remember one of the UMCs being on the radio and they brought up the fact the he had cut his dreads off he was like "yeah, i had to get a real job"

Smif N Wessun transmogrified into the Cocoa Brovaz. Young MC has 6 albums.

Half these groups/acts were signed to a major label:

Hard 2 Obtain.........one of these guys sounded exactly like Grand Puba, but L.I. Groove was a pretty dope song

Juice With Soul.......I'd say they were kinda wack, but I just looked over and saw their tape on my shelf

Boss.....................first female "gangster rapper", had some high-profile producers doing her beats, signed to Def Jam...I have no idea what she's doing now

Apache.................dude's debut album was pretty sick

The B.U.M.S...........part of that whole west coast non-gangsta renaissance

Down South...........kinda gimmicky, but they were okay

The Nonce.............I think one half of this west coast Native Tongues-styled group died

Since we're all here,

can someone tell me what happened to Black Sheep? They only have 2 LPs that I'm aware of, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing and Non-Fiction. Did they split or change their name or what? Obviously they didn't stick around nearly as long as the other Native Tongues groups.

Black sheep are apparently recording a new re-union album

Chip-fu from Fu-schnickens is currently recording a solo album to be released on Ali Shaheed Mohammed's label.

Chubb rock seems to do only guest spots at the moment but I'd like another album from him.

Ultramagnetic MC's have reformed with an album out soon and I am going to see them perform in London very soon.

I want a Tribe Called Quest re-union, a 3rd Bass re-union (this happened, with an album recorded but internal problems saw it shelved).

Also, X-Clan are recording a new album - which I can't wait for cos I reckon Brother J has the dopest voice ever.

Three times dope. They were from Philly I think.I believe their first album wasThe Greatest Man Alive, with a dope song by the same name.Another song was Original Stylin. Also you guys probably wont remember these dudes. The Crown Rulers. They were from Camden N.J. which is in south jersey. Its like Newark N.J. but a smaller scale. They has two dope songs also,B-Boy Document and Kick The Ball.I think these dudes got locked up.Does either of the two ring a bell?I would think true old schoolers would definatly know Three Times Dope.

I was talking about the "UMC's" not the Ultramagnetic MC's. They're both good groups though.

I know - that's why I wrote Ultramagnetic Mc's and not UMC's. Although a lot of people do confuse the two - I do not.

With regards to three times dope - they did a track called "Giddy-Up" which has the wackest title but is the dopest track they ever did and one of my favorite ever. It was B-Side to the "Greatest man Alive" 12".

He's not really from the early ninties persay, but i really wish that Fatlip from the pharcyde would resurface, all of the stuff he's done has been really good. He did do some stuff with N.W.A and co-produced an Ice-Cube album though.

I think I heard that before actually. Something else was that Sadat X ghost wrote for Will Smith.

Lord Finesse has a verse on the new Handsome Boy Modeling School cd. It has one of the coolest lines I have heard - "... the type to sport two chicks on the arm like John Ritter"

O.C. (times up)

i heard a couple of tracks from his new album and he's back on his game after some wack albums. they were some really good tracks, he's ready to be back on top of the list of rappers who are overlooked but this time he'll actually deserve to get props unlike when he got props simply for being indie and underground but having god awful albums.

I think O.C. is now signed to Hieroglyphics Imperium, believe it or not.

He was awesome in Organized Konfusion. Then made a great solo album. Then did some guest spots for a couple of years

and we never heard from him again.....

His song "Fuck You" was good on the Training Day soundtrack, never heard much besides that though.

he had a single called "agent orange" that criticized the war in iraq but we didn't hear too much about it

its like he doesn't exist anymore which is a shame cuz he is one of my favorite rappers
