BEIRUT: Zahle MP Mohsen Dalloul accused the government of knowing who assassinated former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and being party to the killing. Speaking during a press conference Sunday at his home in Ali al-Nahri, in the Bekaa, the MP said he also knew who planned the bombing attempt against Chouf MP Marwan Hamade on October 1, 2004 and who shot four magistrates in Beirut in June 1999.

Dalloul, a former defense minister and a traditional ally of Syria, asked: "Where is

the security?"

Dalloul blasted a government decision to "deprive Hariri of government security measures a few days before his assassination," adding that an unidentified government official stated soon after the decision that "Hariri was rich enough to rent security services for himself."

"We live in absolute ignorance and at the mercy of the unknown," Dalloul said, calling for unraveling the truth behind the assassination bid not just for the sake of public opinion.

The MP said the reason why international officials do not hold meetings with Lebanese officials upon their visits to pay their condolences to the Hariri family, was because the "government is guilty."

"What did the government do to acquit itself? Its slyness, absence and ignorance prove its guilt," he added.

Commenting on President Emile Lahoud's statement about the possibility of someone dropping a bomb on demonstrators, Dalloul said he would hold the government responsible if any such incident occurred.

He stressed that if any citizen is harmed, this signifies that "the government failed

to scan the area before

the demonstration."

Dalloul also advised Prime Minister designate Omar Karami not to form a "one-color" government, highlighting the necessity of dialogue between all the factions before the creation of any government.

"We have to agree on a program for this government, starting with investigating Hariri's assassination."

Asked about the odds that the government would totally ignore the perpetrators of the crime, Dalloul said: "The government is treating us like fools ... but the Lebanese no longer trust the government."
