Yeah, I raided my Dad's CD collection and he's got some EARLY Kinks stuff still unopened (he used to have them on vinyl). So I unwrapped that shit and put it on!

Kick-ass stuff! (y)

Of course I've been familiar with The Kinks for quite some time, but it's about time I actually immersed myself in their mod-tacular ness. :D

GIRL I WANT TO BE WITH YOU ALL OF THE DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT!

My older brothers had lots of their 45s and I grew up listening to them. I'm not the hugest Kinks fan, but I still love those songs (and a few later ones).

I'm a sucker for Come Dancing, btw. :)

I did an art project in the 10th grade based on the kinks' song "a well respected man"
Ill take a picture of it if I can find it...

no one but my 45 year old art teacher got it though :/

"nothin' in the world can stop me worryin 'bout that girl"
and
"tired of waiting" are other favorites

oh shit how could I forget:

I met her in a club down in old soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola
C-o-l-a cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said lola
L-o-l-a lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well I’m not the world’s most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Well I’m not dumb but I can’t understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy won’t you come home with me
Well I’m not the world’s most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me

Well that’s the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It’s a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well I left home just a week before
And I’d never ever kissed a woman before
But lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy I’m gonna make you a man

Well I’m not the world’s most masculine man
But I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man
And so is lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Her name was Lola, but was she a showgirl?

Am I the only one just a bit saddened by the fact that he opened it. If it was original press type of stuff you just ruined some of the value DS.

If my kid opens my sealed PB original pressing just because he decides he wants to listen to "Hey Ladies" one day his ass will meet the sharp side of my foot..

I do not understand having vinyl you don't play. I know people do it, but it just feels wrong. I have purchased supposedly new classic vinyl and I always bring it home and play it just because.

I got super sick of Lola because was played on classic rock radio throughout my kidhood, but I think I could actually listen to it now.

Dudes, this wasn't vinyl I played. My Dad USED to have the original album on vinyl and now he's got it in CD form. It sat in his collection for nearly 4 years unopened. I thought it was such a shame he didn't listen to it, so I thought I'd do the honors for him.

Besides, he was intending to listen to it sooner or later anways.

All of the stuff that I have that is still sealed I have a second copy of that I can listen to.

I guess I'm like a collector-geek when it comes to vinyl, like some people collect baseball cards or Star Wars action figures and keep them sealed in the box.

I think my favorite of theirs might well be Muswell Hillbillies. I don't think it's their best album, but it's pretty great, and evidentally I have a soft spot for it.

That and Lola vs. Powerman... and Arthur.

These guys deserve all the respect in the world. Here's why I dig The Kinks (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=39101).

Now I'm listening to their "Kinda Kinks" album. More greatness, of course! :D

My Dad doesn't have much of their later stuff... I guess I know what to get now...

Rather than bump Mickill's old thread, I'll put it here. You've all heard the rumor that Jimmy Page actually did the guitar solos on some of the Kinks' early songs, right? I read stuff where Jimmy said it he did. I've read stuff where Ray says it was his brother (and he apparently hates his brother but says the guy deserves credit). Other people say Jimmy was a session guitarist on them but Dave played the solos.

To my knowledge, Jimmy Page was a session guitarist for them, and he was present during the recording of All Day And All Of The Night. Apparently, that's how and where the rumor began. But if you ask me, if Dave played the solo on You Really Got Me, why would he need Page to play the solo on All Day And All Of The Night, especially since they're so similar. I think this is nothing more than urban legend. I thought it was cool when I first heard about it, but then I read a quote somewhere where Dave insists that it was him.

I've seen Ray Davies stand up for his brother a lot on this. But here's a funny reference slamming Jimmy Page (near the bottom of the page on the link -- if it works--I suck)

Kind of embarrassing, but...

I bought a copy of Misfits a few weeks ago and have been playing it a lot. Great album. But, for whatever reason, I had it mixed up with one of the albums I'm not as crazy about (Sleepwalker? -- maybe I'll have to snag that one again, too) and, for years, thought Misfits was a pretty mediocre record.

Oops.

Anyway -- highly recommended.

There is a great Kinks tribute album that came out a few years back called "This is Where I Belong."

It contains a bunch of great Kinks covers. Check it out.
