View Full Version : The Most Underrated Bands of All Time..

Your chance to big up those bands who deserve it but never get it. Here's mine...(The first 2 are pretty obvious)
Beastie Boys - Never get the recognition they deserve as true all rounders
BS2000 - Revolutionary
Kinks - as good as The Beatles...ooh i'll get hate mail for saying that
Spooks - Without them there'ld be no Black Eyed Peas (who said that would be a good thing?)
Interpol - catchier than chinese flu

I say this so many times, but I'll say it again - Feeder.
Too many people dismiss them because of the can of shit that was "Buck Rogers".
They used to do metal and they were cast off as American wannabees.
They had an indie-rock period and were described as "just like every other band"
They went through their sellout phase, and they may not be proud of it, but at least they admit it.
They lost their drummer and became known as "the band who's drummer killed himself"
They went quiet and introspective because of this loss, and suddenly they're "copying Coldplay"
They are undoubtedly the biggest band still on an independent label, but the sad thing is they will probably never acheive the success required to hit the big time, because too many snobby fuckers dismiss them after hearing 1 or 2 songs from the one album where they tried to appeal to the masses.
They are the best live act I have ever seen, they have more real songs than any other band I know, and every album is unique, yet still completely Feeder through and through. How many other bands could change their sound so often, and come out sounding so strong and still retain that certain something that makes them who they are?

none of these are really underrated. I'd probably agree with a-z's saying galaxie 500, and I think the olivia tremor control probably deserve more credit, but threads like these are always messy.

meh. I agree that the Mars Volta is sick as well as off the chain, but I don't think they are under-rated. Particularly with the Frances release, they have a fairly wide fanbase of new fans and old ATDI fans. I mean, they're not getting pimped by MTV, but their album was quite high on the charts, sold at least 100,000 copies week one. I mean it's no 50 Cent, but I'd say Frances will probably go platinum. De-Loused went gold. I'd say based on those sales, for such an esoteric band, that they're not missing attention. But they are awesome. I'm gonna see them live.
And to the topic, well there's a bunch of real indie peeps i could namecheck, but they're not really under-rated as much as just smalltime. Uh, I'd say Jurassic 5. A lot of people knock the MC's in J5 for being subpar, and I think this is absurd. Chali 2na is like top 5. He's the shit. Don't step.

that's the thing though. they're getting all of this attention for frances the mute since the widow is all over the radio and mtv, BUT it in no way compares to deloused in the comatorium. that album is seriously amazing. nt just the music, but the way it was recorded. everything about it is brilliant.

A Portland band I came across once in a record store in Seattle's U-District.
Very good. Very nice. It's perhaps on a sentimental tip that put's me in good spirits and regard for their music.
Oh, and now that I think about it, the Impressarios!
A Jazz band that were regulars at a bar/ restaurant I worked at in Sterling, Va.
Both bands are dope instrumentally. Both can turn the machine out. LH has a somber rock quality to them with steady grooves... They do it right! I think they're still in their experiemental stage, but their music is done really well and naturally..!

take the veil cerpin taxt
earlier in this thread, i talked about how amazingly this album was recorded. part of why i said this, was because a couple weeks ago, my best friend was listening to it as he was going to sleep, and had the craziest/weirdest/creepiest dreams ever... only after waking up from them did he realize that in one song, there is a second, quieter vocal track being played in the background that was recorded in a way to make it seem as though cedric is walking in circles around you while he's singing. [he had been having writer's block, but the second he woke up after those dreams, he was able to finish 3 songs that he had been having trouble with.]
both of us have this in our top 3 albums ever.. and we've listened to it tons of times.. picking each song apart and talking about it.. but neither of us have ever noticed that other vocal track before.. or heard anyone else mention it.
and now i can't remember what song it was. i'll ask him later.

The two Mars volta albums and the Tremulant EP are like my children, I just can't choose one, each one is different and amazing :o
At the drive in, mars volta and sparta are all great, in my opinion. However sparta isn't in the same league.
But the most underrated band in my opinion is Australian band Rocket Science. Not really sure why I chose them, but Mars volta are already pretty big and have much cred amongst music lovers here whereas Rocket Science dont despite being Australian and being around for a few years.

Well,I was thinking more along the lines of the popular opinion, media attention and critical acclaim.....I agree all of those bands were/are likely content with their success...and have little to no interest in arena venues, world tours or magazine covers,as if those events are some sort of measuring stick....

i don't think that The Westminster Abbey is "underrated" neccessarily because everyone, critics and fans alike have been very generous with their praise toward them, i think they're just not as well known as they should be. i'm sure soon they'll be a household name once everyone learns how great they are.

Butthole Surfers have a terrible band name, but I wish they'd get a little more respect musically. Their acid/pop/rock/rap weirdness is completely unique, and Gibby Haynes is one of the coolest frontmans of all time. 'Dracula From Houston', from their last album Weird Revolution is one of the best pop songs of the past 5 years.
Clinic are sometimes overlooked too, which kinda sucks. 'The Magician' was one of my favourite singles last year, and it got buried when it came out which is a shame.
And Big Audio Dynamite. Their career is a little scattershot, but they've got a lot of songs that are worth checking out like 'Esquerita' and 'I Turned Out a Punk'. I hope Mick Jones will come back with another B.A.D album, or at least something on his own.

i'd definitely have to say the yardbirds, the jeff beck group and humble pie. the yardbirds were the first proper guitar rock band, with beck laying down some of the first metal inspired lead phrases and licks. ditto the jeff beck group, who would create the basic template that beck's pal jimmy page would drawn upon for zeppelin. and humble pie, who after cream, were one of rock's first supergroups and really were a combination of all of the best elements of zeppelin, the stones and the who.

It's probably a blessing that some bands get "underrated", because otherwise they suffer from overexposure, backlash, selling out, blah blah blah, etc.
Besides, music geeks thrive on the lesser-to-little-known gems.

I say this so many times, but I'll say it again - Feeder.
I remember seeing them with my brother support Stereophonics around 98/99 when I was really young. Even now I recall how obvious it was that Feeder blew the Phonics off stage. Their performance totally took the fizz out of the Phonics... And at the time I was a huge Phonics fan! But all I said was at the end of that night was that the first band was the best. The fact I've heard loads of people say the same thing regarding the same tour is no surprise to me.
I didn't really get into Pushing the Senses, but everything up to that point was solid and sound progression. Yesterday Went Too Soon is a high point of 90's Britrock and one of my favourite albums full stop.
Oh, and an underrated band is The Living End.

The Living End aren't underrated. they are rated just right.
Look at Green Day, how massive they are. I just mean there's a whole new benchmark for the punk rock thing, and The Living End, all in all, have some far superior songs to just about every punk rock band, hence why I think in today's world they're underrated. And Chris Cheney is an underrated guitar player.
I'm just speaking from a in the UK point of view by the way, Australia obviously and maybe America gives them more coverage. I'm not bothered by it though. But honestly, for the rest of the world TLE is like a cult band.
