Man, these guys were great.
I don't know if we have other Big Star fans here.

I only have their 3 studio albums. I think #1 Record is among the greatest debuts ever. But Radio City is easily my favorite.

They're one of those many bands that I've just been meaning to check out at the record store but end up choosing Morrissey albums before it occurs to me to investigate Big Star. ;)
Thanks for the reminder!

Thank God that, these days, #1 Record and Radio City are both on one disc. That's one of the best combo packages alive, along with Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight.
If you put a gun to my head, I'd actually go with #1 Record as my favorite. The songs are just so perfect, and it careens so nicely that it doesn't even feel odd.
But "Life is White," "You Get What You Desrve," "Back of a Car," "September Gurls," and "I'm in Love with a Girl" are clearly classics, too.
I think we're talking about the difference between an A+ and an A, frankly. (y)

I've got Third/SisterLovers. It's got some gems like Kizza me, You can't have me and Dreamlover.
One of my favourite Swedish bands the Nomads used to play a wonderful version of Bangcock (sp?) live and Teenage Fanclub used to play some of their stuff live as well. And I had an opportunity to see Alex Chilton live once as well about 20 years ago at Mean Fiddler in London. Literally bumbed into Edwyn Collins on my way from the bathroom...  :p

Adam, the Black Star album was kind of a disappointment to I think just about everyone that heard it except maybe yourself. After getting a promo of Definition, I was expecting to hear something pretty mind-blowing. It's a solid album, don't get me wrong. But all in all, it was totally lacking.

Every now and again I buy a copy of Third, hoping it'll grow on me, and it just makes me sad. I don't know why, but it's one album that I can't seem to hear properly, because it just sounds like a great band falling apart.
I'll have to try again sometime soon. Thanks for the encouragement. (y)

I can't get into Third either. I think I've only listened to it about 3 times. I was sort of disappointed because I'd heard it was their best album from a few different sources.

I've heard that, too. I think Peter Buck has even name-checked it in the past.

Black Star was the first Parental Advisory cd I bought. I guess I was twelve. It was so different from all the shit I heard on the radio. Every other song was a fucking Bad Boy, pre-P. Diddy, pre-Pastor Ma$e song. Thieves in the Night blew my fucking mind, as well as Definition. Not to mention the too short B Boys Will B Boys. The rest of the album just fell into place.
The stupidest things piss me off.

I've read about these chaps in some British import mag. That Chilton fella has spunk; I should check their stuff out.
But first, Roxy Music.

I'm listening to "#1 Record" right now and... HOLY CRAP! They're responsible for the "That 70's Show" theme song?
Wicked! :D (y)

Checkout The The, Soul Mining (http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/t/thethe-soul.shtml). Right up your poop shoot dude. Especially for just the one song, This is the Day.
I added that link just for the last paragraph about Johnny Marr.

I know this may seem goofy, but that Replacements song "Alex Chilton" where Paul sings, "I never go far without some Big Star"........well, I do go far w/o Big Star....but I never go far w/o The Replacements.
Some reason just wanted to throw that in the thread.

Yeah... but they re-recorded it for the show. Big Star's version is the real thing. (y)

"September Gurls" is probably the greatest rock-classic-with-the-worst-guitar-playing ever. :D

I don't know how I missed this thread, but Third is on a lot of critics' best lists, and I don't get it. #1 is so much better.
