With the summer coming up, it seems there's just piles of great new releases waiting. Let's list all the stuff you're looking forward to.
For me, I'm jonesing for:
Ryan Adams - "Cold Roses" (May 3rd) and whenever his other two albums will come out this year :)
Bruce Springsteen - "Devils and Dust" (April 26th)
Gorillaz - "Demon Days" (May 24th)
Coldplay - "X&Y" (June 6th)
Ben Folds - "Songs For Silverman" (April 26th)
New Order - "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" (April 12th... or is it 26th?)
Uhhh... I heard The White Stripes will have a new one in June or so... anything concrete about this?
That's all I can think of for now. Anything else I need to get excited about?

Absolutely, definitely, positively, completely "in agreeance" re: NIN. Reznor blows my fucking mind right open.
I have high hopes for "With Teeth". The single "The Hand That Feeds" is catchy as fuck. Definitely seems more like a return to the Pretty Hate Machine-style industrial.
Oh, and Fantomas, too! The preview track made me giddy.

I sure wish Bruce would get back to the Carny's and Backstreets, being the disenfrancised migrant worker's advocate schtick wears thin. Not a major complaint, I'm a fan and all.....it's just that a little of that "woe is the workingman" stuff goes a long way.

The funny thing is that I've seen him live so often and yet I can't remember the last time I listened to any of his recorded music. I just realized that I don't have any of his music on my 40G ipod!
I have a friend who adores him and I generally tag along to the shows. He's good live. But it bugs me that he will do ALL of the tracks from whatever the new album is no matter what. And his shows are too long. And his fans are generally not my kind of people. And I agree with yeahwho -- it was better when he was singing about cars and his dad and shit.
I don't usually go to concerts just out of habit, but I guess that's the deal with Bruce. But then I think that I started going in the first place just because everyone else at my school was going.
Oh, and last night I was playing the game Scene It with friends and one of my questions was which film director directed Bruce Springsteen's video for Dancing in the Dark? And I didn't know it was Brian DePalma. (I still can't believe it was DePalma. I knew Sayles did later ones) But it was kind of a coincidence that I was there when it was filmed. Not that I was close enough to see the director! But I loathed that song (and album) from the get go and we had to listen to it 3 times in a row 'cause they were filming it and it was the first show of the 1984 tour.

...I've only heard the single. I thought it was pretty good, more effective than it deserved to be, but that was about it.
You have no idea the pain and heartache of being a Springsteen fan and then seeing him start wobbling on Born in the USA and Tunnel of Love, and then completely flame out on Human Touch and Lucky Town, and then Tom Joad was meh.... you start protecting your heart, DS. :D

Wow. That sums it up perfectly.
The worst part about The Rising is that he started doing a 20 minute version of Mary's Place (or whatever it's called) at concerts.
Last time I saw him was the Vote For Change concert and it was much better because he did covers and songs that meant something and not so much new crap (except for a lengthy version of Mary's Place again!) And best of all, I was able to hear Born in the USA for the first time ever in a crowd that knew it wasn't a flag-waving, pro-government anthem. Still, it's difficult not to go when you get good seats! :o
I will never pay to see REM again.

...after I started really getting into music, Nebraska was the first album I ever waited for. When it finally came out... hoo boy -- that was some scary shit. I was completely blown away, except for the odd song that was just really good ("Used Cars") instead of great.
"Nebraska" was pretty chilling, but Springsteen's howls on "State Trooper" were from another place altogether. ...and just that desperation: the thumb hitting the bass string and this hushed man singing/muttering "Mr. State Trooper/Please don't stop me/Please don't stop me/Please don't stop me" and you knew it was probably more for the trooper's sake than the driver's.
...and a lot of folks hated the record, after The River, because it "didn't rock," so those of us who got it felt pretty special, and we knew our man could do no wrong.
Then a couple years later, we hear that the new album is coming out. Eager, eager, eager -- and the first single drops. "Dancing in the Dark"? It sounded like a cliche, but Springsteen had made cliches work over and over again, so maybe...
....and we thre the single on in the record store, and here's this pseudo-dancy synth-ridden... thing. Everything about it was pretty banal, except the odd line or two: the drumline definitely didn't need Max, and the synth part definitely didn't need Roy to do it. What a waste.
Played it again, and it didn't get better. Flipped it over, and there was a non-album cut called "Pink Cadillac" that was pretty simple, uncomplicated rock, but man it sounded nice and sexy. But it wasn't on the album!? He kept "Dancing in the Dark" and tossed "Pink Cadillac"? What the hell!?
Anyway, the album finally came out, and "Born in the USA" kicked it off, and, to me, there was no misreading it. I loved it. Poignant, furious, and amazing drumming there at the coda by Max. From there, the album was hit and miss -- I loved "I'm on Fire" and "Glory Days," but what the hell was this "No Surrender" crap? Or "Bobby Jean"? I mean, I know what they were, and that Miami Steve was leaving the band, but come on.
Arthur Baker got his mitts on a whole bunch of the songs and re-mixed the hell out of 'em for 12" singles. Some of that was really interesting. But I had hoped it was just a slump. Instead, the next album made it look like what he was settling for or even aspiring to.
I think I'd actually take Tunnel of Love over Born in the USA, just barely. But when nothing came out for years and then the results were Lucky Town and Human Touch -- two relentlessly mediocre albums released simultaneously as an event, it looked like it was over. I hope he pulls a great one out of the box sometime -- maybe The Rising is that, or this new album, even -- but... I don't know.
He once said he was single because he wasn't ready to write "married music" yet. Now he's been married twice. I don't think that has to be a curse on your art -- not at all -- but my hope is that he finds his family time profound and peaceful and fulfilling enough that he's not on that search anymore which he used to so clearly document. His road, his river, his hometown -- I think he's reached the home he wanted, and that fire is extinguished.
Huh. Didn't realize I'd thought about it that much. I hope I'm wrong, and he finds a way to make great music again (if he isn't already).

I loved Nebraska even though it was challenging for me.
The worst part of Born in the USA is there are many songs that sound the same. And it's never a good thing when there are so many producers. For a while I wondered whether I disliked it partly because he got so huge or because so many people misunderstood the intentions. But over time I disliked it more and more.
I prefer Tunnel of Love to Born in the USA. But how do you decide not to use the band? The only good thing about the Rising was that he used the band again and it made for a (mostly) great live show again.
It's been a while since I read Mansion on the Hill, but I might have to find it again . . . .

"tween you and Documad you've summed up the Bruce problem quite nicely.
Greatness was Hurly-Gurly Go-Kart Mozart and RamRoddin' Racing in the Streets sort of stuff, A Spot Out `Neath Abrahm's Bridge and "boy you break that thing you bought it"
I think the guy tries too hard nowadays to represent the everyman, when truly he isn't. He is a Rockers Rocker.
"Now I don't care what kind of shape you're in
If they put up a roadblock, I'll parachute in"
Me? --- I want the next White Stripes too.

"Spare Parts" was pretty great, though.
You make a point I'd take a step further: he's trying to write like/for Everyman. It'd be nice some day if one of these cats would just go ahead and dare to write rich man/woman music. I wonder what it would sound like?
But maybe the answer is not to try to write burden-oriented rock. If someone's not plagued any longer, maybe they could write peaceful stuff. I mean, it seems like Moondance (the album) isn't bound up by economy or other social issues.
I guess he could just write overtly political stuff, if that's his problem, but that's hard to do without being didactic. I think The Clash and Woody Guthrie are a couple of folks who've done it well.

Billboard.com seems pretty good. They got a list for each week AND you can search through them by genre.
http://www.billboard.com/bb/releases/index.jsp
As much as I worship allmusic.com, they're calendar of new releases is kinda confusing. First, they include a whole whack of classical stuff that doesn't interest me. Second, it's tough to view the list by actual release date (it seems to only be in alphabetical order and not sorted by the release DATE).

...at the time, anyone could submit reviews on a feelance basis. I imagine it's still that way; the editors would read them, and if they liked them, they paid for it and put it online.
Most of the stuff I reviewed was rock music by Christians -- Pedro the Lion, The Waiting, Black Eyed Sceva, Polarboy, Scarecrow & Tinman, stuff like that. It was right during the period when I started using my middle name, so some reviews say "Doug" and some say "David."
The reviews themselves are all right, but kind of rough. The pay wasn't much, so I didn't invest a huge amount of time into writing them. I was getting lots of free CDs though -- from MorningStar, from The Wayside, 5 Minute Walk, etc.

Okay, I'm starting to kind of love the new Garbage, and the last song is great. But I usually have to skip the song about cutting.
Foo Fighters is not until June? Do you really release a single two months ahead of time?
Del! Tha Funkee Homosapien - the 11th Hour
Dan the Automator - Omakase
Dr. Dre - Detox
Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
NIN - With Teeth
alot of these aren't necessarily slated for this year particularly, but they've all been underway for so damn long that this is a likely year for their release
oooh :) me too! i've been waiting forever for that fiona apple album, they don't even have teasers or anything... and i didn't know red hot chili peppers were coming out with another one this summer. i want that too.
and i know this isn't a beastie related forum, but i wish the beastie boys would work on another one real soon... i just want more... and cuz the message board is lookin' kinda sad on the other side :p !
