This was where New York punk could've gone -- part of the Patti Smith/Television branch of the family tree -- and it would've been interesting to see it get played out by someone other than, say Talking Heads.

Supposedly, Richard was the first guy to rip his clothes before he went onstage, presaging the whole punk look/safety pin stuff.

He wrote really good songs. Check out "Love Comes in Spurts," "Blank Generation," and "Betrayal Takes Two."

The legend says his girlfriend at the time ripped up his clothes before he went on stage because she was either angry with him or she wanted him to get new clothes. something like that.

anyway, he was in Television before they kicked him out becuase he couldn't play his bass. they used to close with an early version of Blank Generation.

yeah, but television had total control over their band. they didn't have Malcom McLaren breating down their necks telling them what to wear, what to play, who can be in the band (Glen Matlock was a fucking great bass player!)

anyway, there's this book called, funnily enough, Punk by someone who's name esapes me. I'll find out later. but they had a big section about the new york scene, and they talked at great length about Television and Richard Hell. It's just this big picture book with great shots and lost of great text. you should check it out.
