I've known they were planning to go into the studio this year back in Christmas, but so far the recording process is going great. Let's hope it can be released later this year so we can see a New Order/Depeche Mode showdown. :)

Rob Kleckner reports:
It has been four years since Depeche Mode released their last album, Exciter, and they've finally taken to the studio to record a follow-up. The band are producing the album Santa Barbara with the help of Ben Hillier, who has worked with Elbow, Doves, and Blur.
In a press release, singer Dave Gahan says, "It's a great feeling to be back together in the studio again and we are very excited about the new material. We are all feeling incredibly positive about the album. Ben Hillier has brought a whole new dynamic to the group which is quite inspiring."
Last year, Depeche Mode's Remixes 81-04, sold over one million copies, and Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda remixed "Enjoy the Silence", which was a hit single in the UK.

It will be better than the New Order album I guarantee, because that's not that good.
I'm a massive DM fan but to be honest I think myself and the rest of the clan are more looking forward to another world tour rather than the album itself.

I dunno. I've got faith the boys of DM can deliver! (y)
Sure, "Exciter" was a little underwhelming, but "Ultra" is a very under-rated masterpiece of Depeche Mode's latter days.

DM's Playing The Angel came out today here in the States. There are two versions: the regular CD and a CD+dvd package with all the tracks remixed into 5.1 surround form. In Europe this package is different: the included "CD" is actually a hybrid sacd, which is another audio format that can contain surround music (though there is confusion as to whether this sacd has such mixes). But to hear either the stereo or surround track on an sacd, you have to have an sacd-capable player to do this. Because unlike a dvd-audio disc* which always contains a Dolby Digital and/or DTS 5.1 track for regular dvd players to play, sacds require a dedicated player. Though a hybrid sacd's advantage over a dvd-audio disc is that they include a CD layer for (regular) CD players to play.
Music like DM's should sound really good swirling around from all those speakers, just like with Pink Floyd's, Roxy Music's, or Beck's "out of the box" tunes on their surround releases.
* which I personally think is what the U.S. version is because: Reprise releases DM's music here, Warner Bros. owns Reprise and Warner sells only dvd-audio (one of its biggest supporters actually) & not sacd; and the CD+dvd package is quite expensive (extra royalty fees usually have to be paid for a dvd-audio disc, just like with Beck's Guero deluxe edition, all those recent R.E.M. CD+dvd editions or The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi deluxe edition).

Well it's not a dvd-audio but at least it uses the "DTS96/24 (http://www.dts.com/consumer/technology/)" format which IMO on systems that cost less than $1K will sound nearly the same as dvd-audio tracks do, even with systems that use regular DTS decoders (& Dolby Digital on my system usually has a slightly softer/less detailed high end).
According to post #75 in this thread (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?p=1337682#post1337682), for UK and EU fans the hybrid sacd does have surround tracks.
Unfortunately it looks like the UK/EU versions also use some form of copy protection.

They're not coming to me, either. What else is new?

The hell? That's really all that can be said...
they'd have a solid new album if Martin Gore wrote all of the songs like in their heyday, and dave didn't threaten to quit if he dosent get to write some songs, because his are the downfall of this and any recent DM releases.

Do you think they should invite Vince Clarke back into the band? ;)
And what's up with me not caring about black people? (in your sig, Matt)

I think they should listen to their old albums, but thats probably just me.
and I don't know whats worse, that the pop culture reference is already old, or that you just now noticed it.

It is just you, because "Playing the Angel" is brilliant! It's up there with "Violator" and "Songs of Faith and Devotion" :)
And how long have you had that sig? You're not that active a poster, so it kind of passed me by. :(
OH SNAP you din'nt just compare Playing the Angel with Violator. It's fuckin on.
I've had that in my sig for about two months, I guess. Ever since Kanye said it at that Katrina benefit. I poped your name in there for no particular reason at all.

Speaking of pop culture references and I know this is compeltely off-topic but does "oh snap" come from the Living Color comedy TV series with the two gay movie reviewers? I haven't seen that show (which I like a lot) on any channel in years so was just wondering where it came from.

I've only listened to half of the CD, but I like what I've heard so far. It's not as good as the older stuff, though.
