Nah.

Between the Buttons and Aftermath are when they really started cookin'. It's like their Revolver/Rubber Soul, sorta.

whatever

you're one of those predictable and ignorant Beggars to Exile dinks, who only consider the generic, straight-forward rock of the Taylor era to be their greatest work....well yeah, they were a phenomenal live band but albums are more important. this album is peak because Jones went to great lengths to add his prolific brilliance of adapting an array of exotic and unconventional instruments into the Stones material...the result putting them on an immediate, equal footing with the Beatles. sure, Taylor was a virtuoso but all he could do is play guitar, some bass and keyboards. during the Jones years, they branched out in so many different musical directions, which allowed Brian to do this thing of pushing the music into a vast eclectic malestrom. the music from this time is superior...it's so much more diverse, rich, unconventional and progressive; yet maintaining and solidifying their raw, rootsy, snarling trademark sound, ie: 'Under my Thumb'. and of course Between the Buttons features incredible songwriting by Mick and Keith, however it was much more of a Keith/Brian album. regardless, it's an overlooked treasure featuring timeless material, particularly the stirring and sprawling 'Who's Been Sleeping Here', 'Backstreet Girl' which puts you in a Paris alleyway, the hazy yet uplifting 'Yesterdays Papers' and the 'Ruby Tuesday' single, which all perfectly demonstrate what I'm getting at.

Anytime The Stones best albums come up in conversation, I think about this neglected gem.

She Smiled Sweetly is easily the best song on it, in my opinion. But the US version has Ruby Tuesday on it, which kinda trumps it. Kinda.
