Russian woman gives birth to Cyclops child
02/22/2005 12:57

The little girl's body was placed in a container of formalin, from where it is still gazing at the world with the only one big blue eye

The weird baby looked at the world with its only eye, took a breath of air with the trunk that was growing on its forehead, and died. Doctors of one of St.Petersburg hospitals told the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that it was an absolutely normal woman that gave birth to the incredible mutant-baby, which could be compared to a Cyclops. The female creature was covered with thick hair; it had only one eye in the center of its forehead and a small trunk that was growing on the head above the eye.

The middle-aged mother of the unusual child had a preterm delivery. Doctors would not have time to take her to the maternity hospital. The woman gave birth to the baby girl at home. Doctors' hair stood on end when they saw the seven-month-old fetus. Thick hair was growing on the girl's shoulders and back. Locks of hair were growing on the baby's head too. The little girl has a big blue eye on the forehead. The child had no nose: there was something strange growing on the head right above the eye. Doctors believed at first that it was a penis, although they determined later that it was a small trunk, through which the baby could breathe.

The mutant child died almost instantly. The doctors tried to take life-saving efforts, but they brought no result.

It is hard to imagine what kind of shock the child's parents had to survive. They were dreaming about a baby for long, but their dream ended with a nightmare.

The deceased infant was sent to a morgue, where professional experts of forensic medicine thoroughly examined the little body. The hairy, one-eyed girl had a number of other physical defects, which would not let her live even for several days.

Nobody buried the strange baby in the end. The body was placed in a big glass container of formalin, from where it is still gazing at the world with the only one big blue eye.

"This is a unique incident, - gynecologist Ivan Rylchikov said. - Such deviations are possible; they can be caused with a variety of reasons. The formation of the eyes and brain starts during the first week of the embryonic growth. The presence of certain chemical substances, various medications, in the organism of the mother can exert a strong influence on the fetus too. Tetracycline, which is strongly not recommended for use during pregnancy, can cause a certain deviation in the physical development of a child. The medicine affects the development of the fetus's bones and teeth; even a small dose can be extremely dangerous for an unborn child. A Cyclops is not viable - they do not live longer than only one week. In addition, nature has its own regulator. If the development of the fetus takes an unusual turn, the probability of a miscarriage increases a lot. This is the way that Mother Nature uses to kill mutants in the womb," the specialist said.
that's fucking crazy. I wonder if it's real.

Anencephaly
This is a neural tube defect that occurs when the cephalic (head) end of the neural tube fails to close, usually between the 23rd and 26th days of pregnancy, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp. Infants with this disorder are born without a forebrain - the largest part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebrum, which is responsible for thinking and coordination. The remaining brain tissue is often exposed - not covered by bone or skin.

Infants born with anencephaly are usually blind, deaf, unconscious, and unable to feel pain. Although some individuals with anencephaly may be born with a rudimentary brainstem, which controls autonomic and regulatory function, the lack of a functioning cerebrum permanently rules out the possibility of ever gaining consciousness. Reflex actions such as respiration (breathing) and responses to sound or touch may occur. The disorder is one of the most common disorders of the fetal central nervous system.

There is no cure or standard treatment for anencephaly and the prognosis for affected individuals is poor. Most anencephalic babies do not survive birth. If the infant is not stillborn, then he or she will usually die within a few hours or days after birth. Anencephaly can often be diagnosed before birth through an ultrasound examination. The maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP screening)and detailed fetal ultrasound can be useful for screening for neural tube defects such as spina bifida or anencephaly.

In the United States, approximately 1,000 to 2,000 babies are born with anencephaly each year.1 The disorder affects females more often than males.1 About 95% of women who learn that they will have an anencephalic baby choose to have an abortion. Of the remaining 5%, about 55% are stillborn. The rest usually live only a few hours or days.

In almost all cases anencephalic infants are not aggressively resuscitated since there is zero chance of the infant ever achieving a conscious existence. Instead, the usual clinical practice is to offer hydration, nutrition and comfort measures and to “let nature take its course.” Artificial ventilation, surgery (to fix any co-existing congenital defects), and drug therapy (such as antibiotics) are usually regarded as being pointless. Some clinicians see no point in even providing nutrition and hydration, arguing that withdrawal of nutrition and hydration is morally and clinically appropriate in such cases.

The cause of anencephaly is unknown. Neural tube defects do not follow direct patterns of heredity. Studies show that a woman who has had one child with a neural tube defect such as anencephaly, have about a 3% risk to have another child with a neural tube defect. This risk can be reduced to about 1% if the woman takes high dose (4mg/day) folic acid before and during pregnancy.

It is known that women taking certain medication for epilepsy and women with insulin dependant diabetes have a higher chance of having a child with a neural tube defect. Genetic counseling is usually offered to women at a higher risk of having a child with a neural tube defect to discuss available testing.

Recent studies have shown that the addition of folic acid to the diet of women of child-bearing age may significantly reduce, although not eliminate, the incidence of neural tube defects. Therefore, it is recommended that all women of child-bearing age consume 0.4 mg of folic acid daily, especially those attempting to conceive or who may possibly conceive.1 It is foolhardy to wait until pregnancy has begun, since by the time a woman knows she is pregnant, the critical time for the formation of a neural tube defect has usually already passed. A physician may prescribe even higher dosages of folic acid (4mg/day) for women who have had a previous pregnancy with a neural tube defect.
birth defects are actually sort of intriguing. Creepy and sad, but intereresting

FUN FACT OF THE DAY: Pravda was a propaganda machine in the 30's and 40's secretly run by the KGB. It pumped out countless amounts of pro-Stalin regime stories. (y)

Yeah we got some of these pics in our biology textbooks in year 10, which was fairly confronting. And a there was a picture of a cow in the process of going to the toilet "up close" and a picture of a woman with her babies head half way out as the gynocologist helped it out  Pretty twisted stuff for 15 year olds

I was at the "Body Worlds exhibition by Gunther von Hagens and there were deformed infants, too.

Really scary, but fascinating on the other side as well.

Often, women who give birth to these kind of mutants don't get to see them. I can see why that might be right.

Usually the female body disgardes these kinds of foetuses at an earlier stage (miscarriages), it's the nature's way to tell that everything's not right.

And it's not only humans who give birth to freaks. Here's something from the Natural History Museum in Stockholm
