How do you all feel about the Flaming Lips? I've been into them ever since I heard the Soft Bulletin when it came out and have pretty much gotten everything since. Anyone got a favorite album? I think Yoshimi pretty much blows my mind.

They're putting out a compilation tomorrow, I think, with all kinds of other people on it, from Bjork to Miles Davis (pretty random assortment, but a random assortment of awesome music). It's called Late Night Tales, and the Lips even included their version of Seven Nation Army. Have you all seen about this album? Anyone know if it's any good?

It looks kind of cool from what I've seen in this flash - (http://www.studiodistribution.com/latenighttales/)

I love them, especially when Wayne started to combine the theatrics with the live shows....did ya ever see them on Austin City Limits?...They joined Beck when he did it and they also were the main attraction on another episode where they were joined by Cat Power, really, really good music...with puppets, beach balls, lions, tigers and bears,oh my!

I love Yoshimi the record,do you know it's reference to Yoshimi of "The Boredoms"....and thats a connection to the Beasties "Soba Violence"...what comes around, goes around! :)

I like their stuff. Not all at once, but when it comes up I like it.

The only time I saw them live was when the opened for Beck. I thought they were good by themselves. They reminded me a little of Boomtown Rats, but I think it was the video clips, not the music. I thought Wayne tried really hard to make the audience like them.

I didn't think they worked well as a backup band for Beck though.

They're pretty good (although I only have soft bulletin/yoshimi, I know, shame on me). Soft Bulletin is excellent, although it gets a little long (not many songs after "What is the Life" I actually really like), and Yoshimi was underwhelming, none of the songs really got to me.

for real dude, you should be banned from the music board.

You and that person who keeps trying to convince everyone all music made after 1989 is bad.

Sound-everywhere version of Yoshimi (http://hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=157645) Just in case y'all didn't know: you do NOT need a special dvd player to hear the surround tracks > Dolby Digital tracks are provided for regular players. And, be careful listening to the surround tracks if you're driving (I'm not kidding: the mix on this disc is that freaky).

BTW: Wayne Coyne does a guest appearance on Thievery Corporation's Cosmic Game album, on the somber track "Marching The Hate Machines (Into The Sun). You can buy the individual track here. (http://www.eslmusic.com/shop/item_detail.asp?pk_product_sku=00EC5886-AE4F-45C3-9D3E-776509D702D2)

Kingspammer:
I don't know about orchestrated, I do know that the Bad Plus do an awesome cover of it with piano/bass/drums. They are AWESOME. I saw them at the Village Vanguard here in nyc a few months ago (sat next to norah jones, randomly) and it was AWESOME.

Me like Flaming Lips!
I totally fell for that tangerine-song when it came out, but I only have Clouds taste metallic and Yoshimi. I really should get some of their other stuff as well... I've seen them a couple of times, the last time was that furry animal tour. I made some pink bunny ears for the gig and Wayne was really pleased to see them in the crowd, making a comment. Afterwards he signed them for me and somewhere there's a picture of Wayne, me and some other fans who met him backstage. I'd really like to see that.

FYI: The Soft Bulletin will be released in 5.1 surround form on January 31.

From the Flaming Lips' (http://www.flaminglips.com/main.php) site (even their site is trippy):

The Flaming Lips' landmark 1999 album 'The Soft Bulletin' will be re-issued on DVD in the US on 31 January. As per the 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots 5.1' release, the album tracks will be supplied in advanced resolution 2.0 and 5.1 mixes, as well as Dolby 2.0 and 5.1 mixes. There will, of course, also be a whole host of extra goodies. The full content list is:

The Soft Bulletin - 5.1/2.0
1. Race For The Prize
2. A Spoonful Weighs A Ton
3. The Spark That Bled
4. Slow Motion
5. What Is The Light
6. The Observer
7. Waitin' For A Superman
8. Suddenly, Everything Has Changed
9. The Gash
10. Feeling Yourself Disintegrate
11. Sleeping On The Roof
12. The Spiderbite Song
13. Buggin'

Album Outtakes
1. 1000ft Hands
2. The Captain
3. Satellite Of You

Radio Sessions
1. Up Above The Daily Hum
2. The Switch That Turns Off The Universe
3. We Can't Predict The Future
4. Remained Unrealizable

Video Extras
1. Race For The Prize
2. Waitin' For A Superman

Like the Yoshimi... surround version, this version will also include a separate CD. It's on preorder here (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7014232&style=music&cart=304148090&BAB=M).

If this surround version is anything like Yoshimi in 5.1, this will be another disc you don't listen to if you get disoriented easily. :)

BTW: as I mentioned in another post, this dvd-actually it is technically a dvd-audio disc like the one in Beck's deluxe edition of Guero-has Dolby Digital stereo* & surround tracks on it so it will play on regular dvd-video players. Dolby can sound very good (it's what dvd movies use) and in comparison, it takes a $1,000+ system to start to hear the better qualities of the "Advanced Resolution" tracks, so don't worry that you'll be stuck with crappy sound because you won't.

Lastly: their new upcoming album, At War With The Mystics, according to info from their message board will also be available in 5.1 surround on dvd-audio. The CD version is supposed to come out in April.

* if you play a disc like this on a stereo system, it's best to manually choose the stereo mix from the audio menu-otherwise your player will probably choose the 5.1 track (six separate channels) and cram or "downmix" them into *two* channels. This can make the music sound sort of messy. Same goes for dvd movies.

Some people *here* (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=34862&page=7&pp=20) have posted some early reviews of the surround mix (VERY wild). And if you're going to buy this, read post #109 on the previous page!

And: if you know anybody with a 2005 Acura TL, 2006 Acura RL, or certain 2006 Cadillac STS or Infiniti "M" Series cars, they include dvd-audio surround systems (look for the "dvd-audio" logo). Surround music in a car is a lot of fun to listen to, but be careful with really wacky mixes like the Lips album above-some people have found out they can sometimes be literally disoriented slightly while the car is moving!

FYI: XM Satellite Radio is going to start a 5.1 surround music channel-the hardware people just have to start building the gear to play it (IIRC sometime this year). Also, there is now a Windows Media 5.1 surround format but am not sure what you need to use it.

I detest this channel's programming (same with their sister channel MTV) but their site does feature some good articles about music & bands

Flaming Lips Go To War Against Britney, Gwen On New LP

from the above article (http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1523030/20060202/flaming_lips.jhtml?headlines=true) (and no, there's no mention of 5.1 music in it :) ):

"There's a line in that song that goes, 'So go tell Britney and go tell Gwen,' and I guess part of what I'm railing against on that song is this preternaturally happy music sung by kids and written by 40-year-old Swedish men. And in between them there's this void," he explained. "I guess the worst offender is like the Black Eyed Peas or Destiny's Child, where they're going, 'I'm a survivor, I'm gonna make it,' and I'm like, 'Well, you're 20, what are you going to survive? Getting a bikini wax this weekend?'

GO WAYNE GO!!!

i like the Lips...I live about an hour and a half away from Wayne and have met him 3 times, hes cool...actually i have a friend that e-mailed him and wayne gave him a cdr called Soft Bulletin Pt.2. Ill upload it at a later time.
For now, you should all listen to my cdr that I made out of their singles/b-sides/peel sessions/demos/etc...this is off the goddamned chain so shout if you love it...spent all day transcoding the songs and cleaning it to make sure the overall quality was as good as i can make it. NOTE:songs from different sources usually cant be evened out perfectly...I.E. a song originally recorded on an 8 track can never truly match 1 recorded on a 64 track professional studio...so dont complain, i have sacrificed weeks/months creating a proper system to measure the levels of cdrs such as this and i believe i have got it down to a science. either way NJOY

1. 1000 Ft. Hands
2. Riding to Work in the Year 2025
3. Satellite of You
4. Slow Motion
5. Assassination Of The Sun
6. I'm A Fly in A Sunbeam
7. Sunship Balloons
8. Ego Tripping (Self-Admiration With Blow-Up Mix)
9. Evil Will Prevail
10. Jets Pt. 2
11. 25000 Feet of Despair
12. Do You Realize?? (T.P.S. Remix)
13. Put The Waterbug in the Policemans Ear
14. Life on Mars
15. Hit Me Like You Did the First Time
