It's a live DVD....what is there to work on?

lots of shots to sift through, gathering the best shots from the pro cameras while editing in the fan coverage....

sound editing....its gonna be ready by summer I am guessing....

Yeah...but it doesn't even take this long to edit a motion picture. This is a one take performance shot with multiple angles. There isn't much to work with.

My friend asks about this all the time. She's not a Beastie Boys fan, but she flew to NYC with me for the show and she had the best time ever. I had explained to her about all the cameras fans had in the audience and she wants to know what they came up with.

I want to see it because this was the one time I made the mistake of drinking too much before a Beastie Boys show and I had an awesome time but my memories aren't entirely clear.

But people who edit motion pictures do it for a living so maybe that streamlines things a little bit.

Plus this DVD thing might still be too close to the tour itself and to whatever personal situation they went through for them to wanna put the type of attention into it that it deserves and that they probably wanna give it...know what I mean?

Do you actually think Mike D, MCA and Adrock are editing this themselves?

It's digital video...it's not that hard to work with.

You know, the Criterion DVD of their videos was so great, with all the extras--better than anything other bands have done. BBs probably don't think they can put out just any old shit like another band would do with a live DVD. But sometimes I wish they would put out more stuff, of lower quality, and faster, at least to us via mail or something.

It's a DVD of a live performance. Any input or involvement by the band has already happened. It's a DVD of a concert, filmed digitally. I'm not sure if any of you are grasping this.

I think I'm grasping it.

My division has a hand in video production of all sorts of public offerings that we give and to produce a quality, interesting piece, it takes time. If you want a flat video that has nothing but the concert in real time from start to finish, then I guess I agree with you. But I'm thinking that this DVD might offer more than that--even just the addition of extras and special features is something that takes time if you want to do it in an interesting, thoughtful way.

This is such a pointless argument. I've been at work all day (14 hr shift, no breaks).

I also hope this DVD will be kickass with tons of extras (but I doubt it)....all I'm saying is it shouldn't take this long for editing. This DVD is probably going to go the same way as the Grand Royal CD ROM and "the vault".

I dont think its gonna be an "all msg" dvd. I think they will put other performances on there, and im sure they wont put the song twice on the same dvd, so it will be tough to find the best night the song was done, lighting, sound, etc..

I remember seeing a setlist, (maybe on the tour blog photos, but somewhere) I think for the Italy show. And to the left of the setlist of so whatcha want and ch check it out, it said "FOR DVD".

I hope some extra footage includes: Them playing basketball, stuff along the busrides/plane rides to and from concert, where im sure a bunch of funny shit happened. I also hope they put all videos made for the To the 5 Boroughs album on there, along with video's many of us don't have in high quality such as jimmy james, and time for livin.

There also should be some great easter eggs on the dvd: as highlighting there best moments on tv such as the 94 mtv awards/hornblower situation over sabotage not getting the award, and stuff from the earlier days on mtv.

Remember Yauch came on here asking us all if we could name some tv appearances they were involved in. Maybe he will use the most popular choices that we gave him for the easter eggs on the dvd

Hornblower is on the case!

Make me director damn it!

It's MSG on the DVD. We have established that.

Any mention of DVD on a setlist probably referred to a video break.

I agree with you on the easter eggs, but I also hope we get 5B videos, and studio footage.

your view that it shouldn't take this long for editing is fine, but lets look at what they've said - 'the msg gig was filmed for a live dvd', that's it, we don't know what else is going on with it or what the editing may include, so therefore they can take however long they want to put it out. they're not like 'oooh this shoulda been out ages ago we're just being lazy', they're doing whatever needs to be done.

Toast, how many motion pictures have you edited in your day?

it takes years sometimes to market, release, and distribute a film.

this project is no different. more than likely there is no deadline, and no, Yauch probably isnt sitting on his Mac editing this all by himself, but they probably have a post production team working with the band, the record label, the PR and marketing people, and everyone else involved in putting this thing together to make it a great product.

check Nasty Little Man's release schedule , it still says TBD 2005 (http://www.nastylittleman.com/releaseschedule.html) , so as long as that doesnt disappear, that means they are working on it...

as far as extras, it's probs been said, but all the tt5b video's would be great.

i had this vision that they'd make the songs interchangeable between shows during playback, which i realise is not going to happen, but i always thought that woulda been kinda cool. so like sure shot u switch it over midway through from new york to london, thus getting different beats dropped in by mix master ect

i know i hope they're taking note! seriously though it's probs seem pointless to lotsa people, but for real hardcore fans it'd be super to switch between gigs during playback. it'd be complex (obv not evry setlist is the same, different order ect) but i'm sure it could be done. the msg show and tt5b videos will do though!

After acceptance you have the numbness stage. This lasts for about a year or two, until we get the first blip on the radar screen of some official communication/activity.

I was under the impression that work on the dvd was near completion back in January. Maybe the guys are evaluating the footage frame by frame?

"Oh, my butt looks big in that shot. Use a different one."

About extras...I hope the shout-outs are not on there. I'd rather see Pootytang's adventure and some of the elaborate MMM video intros instead.

We'll probably see a video for "The Brouhaha" on there. That'll be good.

I disagree. I think that since the shout outs are important enough to be used during the concert that they should be used for the DVD also. It's part of the experience to see stupid people say stupid things on camera.

Yeah, but if you put all of them, from every concert, back to back, it would be bad television.

I probably shouldn't say this, because I always have a bad feeling--I'm a glass is half empty girl--but I won't be expecting much of anything from the BBs. The whole way the last shows were never really announced, and then didn't happen . . . .

I'll buy the DVD if is ever comes out -- if only to see whether my friend and I are on there with all those cameras in the audience--but I feel like I already have closure on the whole BBs experience.

Yeah. Did you notice that the Australian sideshows were NEVER announced on this Board? They never made the list of upcoming shows. I only found out about them from other board members in Australia. Someone wondered whether they had to promise not to promote the sideshows, but I'm pretty sure even the BDO website had a link to the sideshow in Sydney, and it definitely had links to other artists' sideshows.

I've posted before that I had a funny feeling about this tour before it started. BBs never came here at all. I only decided to travel to see them because I figured it would be my last chance. They've done "surprise/low promotion" shows in the past too. Quasar and some pre-HN stuff come to my mind. I think they also rescheduled the Australian leg of their tour back in HN days.

But the way this tour was announced and executed was very weird.

I think the shoutouts would be great if they are in the extras section and then accessed via sub menus so that you don't have to watch them all.
For many people these shoutouts will never be watched just like many extras on regular dvd films.

Yeah, and when it comes, that info might make the news box on the homepage. :D

I'll definitely buy the DVD since I couldn't get to any of the concerts and I'm still moping about that. And I want to experience The Weave.

My fault for missing the shows--I hate to drive and I let that get in the way of getting to one of the shows.

One show would have been 5 hours north and the other would have been 6 hours south. I could have done it although I probably would have gotten a Morticia Addams white stripe in my hair from fear of driving the beltway at 90mph.

But I would have seen them.

I'm still holding out hope that they'll do a festival in Europe in the part of August when I'll be there and that I can catch it and do so without driving. :D

Well as one of the fans holding the camera at the show at MSG i can tell you there were 30 fan cameras and i believe 8 pro cameras. And if people did what they were told all the tapes would be the same since we were all told do turn on our cameras at a certain point. There is an idependent company that was hired to work on the dvd who have done past work for the Beastie Boys, but they did say the guys wanted to be involved in the finalizing of what shots were going to be used.

The sound quality is pretty good for a live recording, and they show lots of different angles. Theres a lot of crowd shots, everybody looks like they're enjoying themselves.

Well, I can't say much after seeing 20 seconds of footage, I hope I will have a better impression after seeing the whole clip

the angles change very quickly from band to crowd shots, it was chaotic

Do you have an upgraded version of quicktime player (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html)(on the left there is a free download)? If you do I can send you this 20sec clip.

You probably need iTunes 6.0 to preview.

The whole vid did flip a lot between camera angles, but it's not that bad at all.

When you look at the way Brass Monkey turned out, it's hard not to get excited about every song on the setlist. They did New Style right? And Hello Brooklyn? Shit, imagine So watcha Want! And Sure Shot! Even Triple Trouble!

all the people who claim to know about editing a concert film, I hope you realize how much work they have put into this, and Yes, Yauch has been behind this project, produced and directed by Hornblower himself...

From the Think Film site:

THINKFILM MAKES 'AWESOME' ACQUISITION
First Feature Film Creation for Beastie Boys

New York - November 1, 2005 -- THINKFilm has acquired all worldwide rights to AWESOME; I FUCKIN' SHOT THAT, a cinematic celebration of the hugely popular music group Beastie Boys, it was announced by President and CEO Jeff Sackman. A formally innovative feature film experience, it was directed by Nathaniel Hornblower (a.k.a. "M.C.A," a.k.a. band member Adam Yauch) and produced by Hornblower and Jon Doran. THINK plans to open the recently-completed film in Spring, 2006 following significant festival presentations early next year.

On October 9, 2004, the Beastie Boys handed out 50 cameras to audience members at their sold-out performance in New York's famed Madison Square Garden. These 50 different passionate perspectives shot from the point-of-view of the audience take the viewer deep inside the world of a live Beastie Boys show, prismatically and kinetically capturing the experience of a live musical performance like no film has ever done.

"'Awesome' is the only word that can describe the experience of watching this film," says THINK theatrical division head Mark Urman. "It's totally modern and witty aesthetically, but also fabulous to watch and listen to." Sackman adds, "We have been pursuing this film aggressively since we first read about it and think that Adam, Jon, and the rest of their team at Oscilloscope Films are the equal of any filmmaking team we've worked with when it comes to having a vision and realizing it to its best and fullest potential." Yauch added "I'm glad that the film has found a home with THINK. Shit has been bubbling for a minute and now THINK is gonna light a match."

The first white rap group of any significance, The Beastie Boys have enjoyed two decades of top-of-the-charts success since their 1986 album "License to Ill" and its hit single, "Fight for the Right," catapulted them to international acclaim and fame. Their last three albums ("Ill Communication, "Hello Nasty," and "To the 5 Boroughs") were best-sellers, each reaching #1 on the American Album charts. Their latest, "Solid Gold Hits", a compendium of career highlights is about to be released by Capitol Records. In 2000 A two-disc video set with many of the band's videos--most directed by Hornblower/Yauch--was created by Yauch and released by The Criterion Collection. It remains the only music-video anthology released by the noted archival brand. The most unique feature of the DVD is the ability to switch audio tracks and video angles in any number of combinations. Yauch intends to author similar features on the AWESOME DVD, which THINK will release next summer.

Beastie Boys Mike D (Michael Diamond) and Adrock (Adam Horovitz), star in AWESOME along with Yauch and guests. The film was photographed, as Yauch says, by "a bunch of untrained camera operators. But that gives the film sincerity. The people that shot it, were feeling it."

The deal was negotiated by Sackman, Urman, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Business Affairs Randy Manis, and Acquisitions Vice President Daniel Katz on behalf of THINK. Roger Arar and Ken Anderson of Loeb & Loeb represented the filmmakers.

THINKFilm is a privately held company with offices in Toronto and New York.

Just curious - any idea how many of the '50' MSG camerapeople were contacted after the show? From previous posts it looks like 5 people received a follow-up phone call. I'm one of the camerapeople who unfortunately did not receive a follow-up call and am wondering how many more of us are out there and if no call=no footage used=no end credit on film...
