... a Tibetan asked me what had happened to the Beastie boys and the Milarepa fund. He asked in a very gentle manner, not in an inquisitive way but of hope and I replied that they are no longer. That Erin Potts has moved on and for several years there has been no activity. And that they had recently went on a large tour and they did not continue to raise awareness for the struggle. I suppose as things start to look grim, one must look for other ways to persist and continue. The Tibetan mentioned wanting to have some sort of autonomy for his people but answers were not plentiful on how to achieve this goal. He left Tibet 5 years ago and his english is great. He is raising a family now in a new country.
Friends of Tibet,
We would like to commemorate today the anniversary of Gendhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama,. In 1995, His Holiness the Dalai Lama identified Gendhun Choekyi Nyima as the 11th reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, the second most important figure in Tibetan Buddhism.
The Panchen Lama was 6 years old when he and his family were abducted by the Chinese authorities while he was at home, in Tibet. He then became the world’s youngest political prisoner and for the last 10 years, no one has heard from him.
Since then, China has imposed on the Tibetan people their own Panchen Lama, a Tibetan boy named Gyaltsen Norbu. With this control, the Chinese gouvernment wishes to assimilate Tibetan culture and religion.
To remember the Panchen Lama’s anniversary, demonstrations and vigils will be held worldwide today, demanding for the Panchen Lama’s immediate release from Chinese custody.
You can help the Panchen Lama by forwarding this email to friends and family or by sending a copy of the following to Canada’s Prime Minister Paul Martin :

Dear Mr. Martin,
I am writing to express my profound concern over the continued detention of Gendhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet. This sixteen year old boy approaches his tenth year in detention. Unbelievably, the world community has failed to win his release or to ascertain his safety. As a Canadian, I find myself unable to tolerate this situation any longer.
The arbitrary detention of a child as young as 6 years old - the age Nyima was last seen alive - tramples any sense of human decency and violates several fundamental human rights. Moreover, the accompanying arrests of Nyima's family and several members of his monastery including Chadrel Rinpoche, fly in the face of Chinese claims that the child is held for his own safety. This is clearly not the case. This young boy is being used as a pawn in China's efforts to control the Tibetan people.
I am disappointed that our government has not been able to ensure the whereabouts and safety of Gendhun Choekyi Nyima. I believe that Canada's continuing relations with China should be contingent on the release of this child prisoner. I would therefore like to know, Mr. Prime Minister, what has your government done to secure the release of Gendhun Choekyi Nyima?
Sincerely,
