That's pretty sad that you don't know who New Order is. Not only that, but you're dead set on hating them solely because of Sandinista. :(
Anyways, they're nothing like Coldplay.
First there was Joy Division (if you don't know them as well, also check it out) and Ian Curtis hung himself. The surviving members went on to form New Order. The short way of describing it is that N.O. is like J.D. only they're in a much better mood (JD was all brooding and dark) and make some great tunes to dance to.
I doubt you'd enjoy them since they're not metal, but you're free to prove me wrong.

I quite like new order/joy division. It has more musical sense to it than metallica does plus metallica all sounds the same. Also i've hated metallica ever since they got rid of napster.
Also i've hated metallica ever since they got rid of napster.
you're obviously a stupid geek cunt who downloads albums instead of going out and buying them. go fuck off, seriously... you think it was just Metallica who closed napster? Lars speadheaded it - yes, but he wasn't the only playah involved. you're gonna go and hate a band because they shut down an internet program??? you suck major cock, geek.
if beastie's closed down limewire or winmx or whatever - i couldn't give two shits. you can always go out and buy records.
all metallica sounds the same? what? you expect them to do hiphop on one album, then heavy metal on the next? what the fuck....
AND for those who said i've never heard of new order - i ain't as old as you guys :p

Jeez, Tzar, you're in a bad mood today. Given your fondness for the heavy stuff, I'm guessing you wont like New Order that much. I recommend you have a listen to them, particularly Blue Monday. You might like the kick-drum action in that one.
Kill 'Em All is the only Metallica album worth owning (Seek and Destroy is awesome metal), I reckon.

May I point out that when someone has killed themselves through the act of hanging, you should say they have been 'hanged' not 'hung'. It's a pet hate of mine...
Also, New Order have made some amazing records (as did Joy Division) and can lay claim to many sounds now prevelant in popular culture. However, their new stuff is SHIT.

New Order... takes me back. I haven't heard the new stuff (except on the Gwen Stefani CD) but I was really into them in the 80s. I remember seeing them live along with Sugarcubes (Bjork's old band, for the young uns who may not know) and Public Image Limited. That was a great concert! Ah, the days.
An interesting bit of trivia: the cover art for the Shellshock 12" consists of a detail of the wall that's on the cover of Blondie's Autoamerican. I was reminded of this recently going through my vinyl when I pulled out Shellshock. I wanted to confirm this about the cover but discovered to my extreme dismay that my copy of Autoamerican has gone missing! :( (I'm really bummed about this because it was my first "grownup" album, got it for my birthday when I was 10 or 11. I don't know what the heck's happened to it :( )
Anyway, New Order... yeah.

Mellow = depressing? There is much mellow music that's the total opposite of depressing and suicidal. Like, a large majority of it. Emotions and life are very nuanced and wide ranging, and music, as an art, is supposed to reflect that, and is just as nuanced. being mellow, "hard", upbeat, depressing, happy, sad, etc etc. I imagine someone who would make a statement such as "no mellow music" doesn't, dare I say, understand the full extent, purpose, beauty, and point of music, art, and music as an art. Its about on the same level as a 15 year old claiming the beatles suck.
and it seems to me the majority of depressing "slash your wrist" type music is in the heavier metal, industrial, goth, etc genres of music.
PS Joy Division is indeed depressing "slash your wrist" type music. New Order arent though.

i understand that. that mellower type of music i do consider an art form but at the same time music is entertainment and a release if you will. i like to enjoy my music and feel good about listening to it. but if i've just had a shit day, i ain't gonna come home and listen to coldplay or bands like that. meh

yeah i know what ya mean there. i ain't into that kinda metal. i like hard rock/metal. heavy metal is probably the only metal i'd listen to. bands like metallica/motorhead/anthrax etc. none of that marilyn manson, perfect circle stuff.

JD/NO influenced bands like the dears, interpol and i'm sure more but my knowledge on that kind of music is limited. They were basically just after punk came back in and killed prog rock which i guess makes them pretty influencial.

So you say you've never heard of this band, but yet you can say with total confidence that they were never influential? Jesus, you're full of it, aren't ya?
Just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they weren't influential. They were a key group in the post punk movement. If he hadn't they would've been far more widespread in America. It's amazing that they were as influential over here in such a short time.

Just the fact that the dude killed himself tells me all I need to know about these losers. Dramatic little Nancy-boys whinning about how depressed they are, OOHHH, the drama of life,..I think I'll kill myself,....gimme a fuckin break!
Talk about the pinnacle of immaturity! I love the way you make statements about me like you know who i am. I should "shut my mouth when grown folk are talkin?" Well, no offence to you man, but you don't exactly come across as a "grown up." The quote pretty much proves that. I've said many times i'm really not upset about the fact you don't like Joy Division, the majority of people i know don't like them! What difference is one more? It's the fact that you, (yes, you, moron) in your typical arrogant, ignorant way made a completely uneducated statement about them. That's all i pointed out! I'm really not angry or pissed off here, you on the other hand..
Oh, and a minor detail, i'm actually 17. A normal 17 year old, at that. I've had girlfriends no bother. Wait, why should i deal with your retarded, immature statements? I know they have no truth in them whatsoever. I know 17 year olds that argue like you do.. you make fun of me because i'm a virgin? ... at 17? Where's the shame in that? Oh, of course, you were out getting laid before you could walk, weren't you? What the fuck? Seriously man, if i didn't know better i'd swear you were a spotty teenager yourself sitting at a pc trying to be tough.
I don't like Metallica because all their music sounds the same: laden with heavy, unoriginal guitar riffs and screaming vocals that really aren't anything special. You wanna hear some real guitar music? Why not download Eruption by Van Halen. Oh, shit man, didn't they do one depressing song while they were together? SHIT!
Oh, and guess what? I have heard of Cliff Burton. I never really liked metallica then either as you may have guessed, but i'm not running around making uneducated statements regarding Metallica (at least while he was still alive) am i? I've heard of Metallica, i've heard music of Metallica, and i am now in a position to say what i've said regarding them. I think you can learn a lesson here man. Calm down, count to ten, then turn off your pc.
Oh and Tzar? Just because they sold so many records doesn't change my opinion, and the opinion of many people i know also: Metallica still blow chunks in my mind. :)

edit: oh and if anyone says metallica are crap? does close-to-100 million records sold over 20 odd years sound crap? they MUST be good enough.
im just waiting for the people to say shit like "100 million records mean nothing - just like the grammys" whinge whinge.
Record sales is not indicative of quality (I happen to like Metallica, so lay off here). Britney Spears has sold records by the barrelful. Does that mean her stuff is good? Hell no.

yeah you kinda shot me in the face there. (y)
Teh - Metallica is not full of:
- "screaming vocals" (that'd be RATM or slipknot)
- "unoriginal riffs" (you've obviously never heard songs like 'seek and destroy', 'master of puppets', 'one' etc).
and what's that shit about Cliff Burton?
you hating on the man? you watch "cliff 'em all" and then talk to me.

I have. It's hard to avoid it when my next door neighbour plays it at full blast when he rolls down the street in his Corsa.
I stand by what i said and believe it: all Metallica music sounds the same to me. I can't tell the difference between the most recent album and any other album, there is no creativity or originality at all. Maybe there was when they first started, but screaming gets tiresome. Real tiresome.
Why are you trying to defend them? Do you really think it'll change my opinion? I don't like Metallica. Never did, never will. Get over it, Tzar.
Blue Monday does indeed rock. Give it a listen, it'll help cool you down.
Nah, he just stole everything to say from me :D

Listen here son, I have kids your age,.....with guns :D
Only in America  . Rob you are clearly and idiot if you don't respect the beatles. They influenced rock completely. They wrote the first Heavy Metal song along with starting the whole singer songwriter scene. And that is only just barely touching the surface. You couldn't possibly know as much about music as you brag about.
As for saying they weren't influencial, New order practically started (or at least had a big hand in) dance music.
Well after much mind persuasion I decided to nick my dad's matallica cd (during his wild years he says) which is vertigo (i think. The one with the black cover) and decided that they aren't half bad (that being not the singles i heard on the radio). I still agree that JD/NO are better though.
And teh, he defends them because you attack them, as he has every right to. Just like you defend JD/NO because Rob attacked them and so on and so forth.

Well, no shit Sherlock. I can see that, but he defends them like i should know better. It's one thing to disagree, it's another to try and make me change my opinion. I defended JD/NO because Robmoron made a completely uneducated statement, totally false. Had he said something true, but negative about them i'd have said "That's just your opinion." but no, he didn't, he said something totally uneducated/retardec regarding them. When i speak my views about Metallica, they're based on what i've heard, and what i've seen. In other words, educated opinions.
Oh, and thanks for also sharing your educated opinion regarding Metallica. :)

the fact that he uses the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a standard of judgement of a musician's worth and influence renders all opinions he may have on any music ever null and void.

Maybe we don't care if it is or not. In our view Metallica doesn't deserve to be in the rock hall of fame is JD/NO isn't.
And yeah my views on metallica were uneducated but at least i had heard of them for gods sake. And in any case, I had heard them before, the same cd before, only my musical views have changed since then (I was what, 10 maybe?)
In any case, Rob, I thought you were smart, you really aren't too bright so nerrr :p

Favorite track?
"Jetstream" is extremely addictive.

...until a bus fell on him. KIDDING LOFZL.
I like both metallica and new order, fools. and they aren't even in the same genre, so why is there an arguement about which is the better band?
HOFS, My current fave from the new album is Jetstream, too, but Guilt Is A Useless Emotion is slowly creeping up behind it. I don't get the whole talk of "The best album since Technique", mostly because 1) I like Get Ready a whole lot more, and 2) I didn't like Technique much. I do see their output as spotty, but thats because they've put out a great deal of music, and theres at least a few songs of filler on each album. the only CDs by them that are in regular rotation for me are Movement, The Best Of..., and Substance 1987. Most of the other albums have too much filler, so I put all my favorites that arent on any CDs in my rotation and put them on a CD. they only made one complete shit record, though, and that was Republic.
And yeah my views on metallica were uneducated but at least i had heard of them for gods sake. And in any case, I had heard them before, the same cd before, only my musical views have changed since then (I was what, 10 maybe?)

For the 100th time, the R&R HOF is a cross-promotional arm of Rolling Stone Magazine. It's Jann Wenner's bitch. And year after year, artists who I kind of admire go and suck his dick at the annual banquet.
Rolling Stone Magazine was an embarrassment in the late 70s -- completely missing the boat on all things re modern British music. It was too busy doing profiles of Boz Scaggs, Michael Douglas, Richard Gere, and other Wenner friends. (I know, the magazine is even worse now because it's just a giant clothing advertisement.)
And yes, even Rolling Stone couldn't close its eyes to the importance of say, the Clash, forever--I mean Pete Townsend loved them and kept bringing them up in interviews. So the magazine eventually gave fabulous reviews to less worth British acts/albums. And if you read the rag now, you would think they were with it all along. If you go to their website, you'll see positive reviews of all those "classic" albums now, but most of the reviews were not published back in the day. For instance, Rolling Stone hated Led Zeppelin and trashed them repeatedly, but you would never know that by reading the magazine or the website today.

Not to mention, weren't they quite lukewarm towards Nirvana? But once Kurt Cobain died, they can't stop being a bunch necrophiliacs plastering him on their cover every 5 issues and weeping over how Nirvana is no more.
There's something so revisionist about them. (n)
