Blair declared winner in Sedgefield amidst reports of fraud PDF Print E-mail

British Prime Minister Tony Blair was officially declared the winner of the Sedgefield constituency amidst reports of widespread vote-rigging.
Opinion polls conducted before the election and exit polls taken on the day gave the seat to the independent Reg Keys, the father of the British soldier who died in Iraq.
Election monitors have declared the election "far from free and fair" after it emerged that a police investigation into vote-fraud allegations were stopped by higher authorities and a group of Sedgefield residents claimed that they saw election officers switch poll boxes as they were loaded to the backs of the delivery vans.
But Mr. Blair appeared to be completely unfazed by the criticism as he stood on the podium as the disputed results were announced.
"Thank you to the people of Sedgefield for re-electing me as your Member of Parliament," Mr. Blair said after he was declared the victor. "I am proud to serve you and you have always been loyal and true to me."
"Too bad he wasn't loyal and true to us," one resident in the crowd was heard to say. "Not only did he lie to us, he also stole the election from us."
