There's something to be said for a question of authority, like the post-revolution Russian literature of Zamyatin. What you know is only what you've learned. It isn't the truth. Those who have found their ideals in the present are blindly following towards their own destruction. And to follow blindly your present ideals without question of their source is the worst kind of self destruction, the destruction of the imagination, of empathy, of the ability to imagine another way of life.
What are some authorities in life that are not obvious authorities, that we may not be aware of as forces that compel and influence us? We know about laws, bosses, standards that are blatant. But what about the unspoken and the subconscious rules dictating our behavior and ways of thinking? Even if we don't act in defiance against them, it is important to at least be aware of them. It's like being a consciencious consumer. For a minor example; Even if you know you're only buying that beer because the commercial was funny, at least be aware of how you were swayed.
