Every week there are shitloads of fantastic records released that are just as good as anything ever put out in the past. If you can't see it you must be looking in the wrong places.

There couldn't be any truer words than that. The problem is people just don't pay attention and want to stay in the past...

If you can't see it you must be looking in the wrong places.

That's the problem. With countless indie releases, some of them have to be good, but the problem is - you don't know about them, and where to look, is another trouble.

Whereas, with older music, it's easier to pinpoint the "good stuff" because it would've already been made notable by many other people.

Music is confusing business.

That's also a very good point. Most average people who are only casual listeners of music aren't going to be aware of what's around beyond what's shown on the music channels in the day time or on mainstream radio.

Sometimes I get asked by people (those who would think that Good Charlotte is a typical punk band) how do you find about these lesser known bands?

I tell them I do research. I'll read the music magazines and read about what up and coming bands are out there (Spin and Blender's "next big thing" features, not to mention the hundreds of CD reviews they run each month... some people may sneeze at Blender, but if you read their review sections, you can find out some really interesting acts!). I'll look at allmusic.com and see what's there. In short, I basically read a lot of stuff.

I also tune in to The Wedge on MuchMusic and they'll play stuff that's a little bit outside of the mainstream and they're a good resource as well.

I find out a lot more about bands through READING then I ever do through the radio.

As daft as it sounds, reading is the best place to find out about new music. I fully agree. Get signed up to some music site newsletters, online shops etc.

I fully recommend Boomkat (http://www.boomkat.com) for a weekly look through new releases as well as Speakers Push the Air (http://www.speakerspushtheair.com) (although I'm biased) and DJ Martian's blog (http://djmartian.blogspot.com/). I'm sure DS will have a few more to contribute.

mando diao ain't so bad. strokes are fairly new but i love them... no one is really coming to my mind....i don't mind the new stuff so much, except when it is way too formulaic like. know what i mean? and i hate all those pop punk teen type bands with the waily voiced lead singer..ick.

haha

most of what's out there is shit, or just a regurgitated version of something that's been done before. that's just my opinion but i stand by it.

you just haven't been exposed to the good things out there. what's on the radio and tv these days is all pretty much a product, meant to sell. you have to dig a little deeper to find the good stuff.

I hate the radio and MTV can go suck a cock. I'm pretty much set in my ways I guess. Maybe I'll have to look deeper

i haven't willingly listened to the radio in about 7 years and mtv doesn't even have music anymore. for starters, read what people say in this forum about music. you'll be exposed to a lot of things you've never heard before. :)

i dont like getting into a band that i cant see live. and when i mean 'see live', i actually mean 'feel live'. paying £50 to watch some dots churn out the hits that sound better on record doesnt really do it for me.

there is a load of good new stuff out there, you just need find a source you can trust. if you really care then you will find it.

From the Squares to the Players to the Pimps and Whores
To big checks that never would have been endorsed
You know, I just sit back and just peep things
9 out of 10 it's the same song, only the beat changed
So don't be looking at Tariq strange
When I conduct a little litmus test up in your heat range
That's when you see me on stage with 6
Wicked ass chicks
Finna get crunk with this

That's a bit from the Roots song 'Pussy Galore'

Fourth line says it all.
