So I managed to get a bunch of stuff at the record store. Far from the amount of stuff I saw that I was interested in getting... but I got a fair amount! (y)

The Afghan Whigs - "Gentleman"
Jeff Buckley - "Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk"
Buck 65 - "Synesthesia"
New Order - "Low-Life"
Talking Heads - "Talking Heads: 77"
Various Artists - "Verve//Remixed 3" (this is a set of jazz artists from the Verve label such as Nina Simone, Jimmy Smith, Astrud Gilberto, et al remixed by today's artists such as Postal Service, RJD2, Danger Mouse, etc.... really cool find!)

I really wanted to get some Bikini Kill and Yo La Tengo, among others... but I had reached my limit. Another time. ;)

How's Synesthesia?

GMA']How's Synesthesia?

Listening to it right now. It's awesome. A lot of rhyming over being a nerd and so forth. It's geek-tastic. :D

Probably is around the same in Australia and a lot of stores can vary (not to mention prices vary from artist to artist and there's a definite difference between indie labels and major labels).

For these purchases, the cheapest was $11 (Afghan Whigs) and the highest was Jeff Buckley ($28, but that was a double-disc set and it's Jeff Buckley, so he's worth it). The remainder was $15-17 or so...

I've downloaded a good load of Buck 65's shit and watched a lot of his stuff on the net, and I'm trying to decide which of his albums to get first.

I plan to buy tthem all, because he's just that fucking good, but I don't know where to start.

The shitty Best Buy and FYE didn't have ANY Buck 65, so I think I'll have to order it off the internet.

Do you reccomend Vertex first? I've heard it's the best.

I haven't met a Buck 65 record I haven't loved. But I recommend starting off with "Talkin' Honky Blues." It's probably his most cohesive and focused effort yet.

I'm really wanting "This Right Here Is Buck 65" myself.

P.S. - Find an indie record shop. They'd probably carry Buck 65.

I haven't heard anything of his that wasn't grade A, either.

Isn't This Right Here just a collection of his earlier works?

And I think I'll just give up and order them off of Amazon.

The concerts I've found of him on the net are fucking INCREDIBLE.

Here are some of them:

Yeah, but apparently some of the early stuff is re-recorded (offering a different take, perhaps?) and there's the inevitable unreleased stuff.

I salivate at the thought...

Every time I read one of your threads in this forum, DS, I start digging through my CDs and/or add to my list of CDs to buy. I will now spend the next hour and a half looking for my Talking Heads CD. Thanks.

I'm not seeing the Guero deluxe edition in there, DS. ;)

The Afghan Whigs - "Gentleman"
Dude, that's a hometown band right there. I used to see them at Bogart's in Cincy in their early days. My favorites from my Afghan Whigs collection are 1965 and an EP called Uptown Avondale.

Greg Dulli apparently grew up a few cow pastures over from me (well, I didn't live there till high school but anyway). One time I was googling this ghost haunting place popular at my high school, and up popped some story from Greg Dulli. And I learned when they went off the air last year (only to return on the web), he, like yours truly, was a devoted WOXY listener in the 80's (97X, the future of rock & roll!). He was all misty-eyed about their letting him come in and spin rekkids.

I just had a birthday and that's when I tend to add a few discs to my collection (or rather, loved ones add them for me). I'm pleased with the new additions:

The College Dropout by Kanye West
American Idiot by Green Day
Verve Remixed 2
This Island by Le Tigre

Okay, today I cleaned up pretty good, I'd say. Here's what I got:

Gorillaz - "Demon Days"
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - "The Message"
Morrissey - "Viva Hate"
Gary Numan/Tubeway Army - "Replicas"
Shout Out Louds - "Howl Howl Gaff Gaff"
Sleater-Kinney - "The Woods"

I was really happy to finally get some Grandmaster Flash. I've always had a hard time finding his albums and could only find compilations that I didn't trust. But apparently the copy I got is a reissue and the sticker boasts that it's the "First time on CD." Hmmmm...

Nevertheless, I look forward to hearing more than just "White Lines" by Grandmaster. (y)

Canadian dollars and Australian dollars are worth just about the same..how about that :D Anyhow you just get ripped off heavily in Tassie. I get my cds for $10 cheapest, $25 for the most expensive and about $15-$20 most of the time :) JB Hifi (y)

i think it's probably because we don't have the big music store chains down here - just small independent places.

the GST upped the prices.

I know I've said this before, but don't like the Verve remixes (they put too much crap over the original music).

Anyhow, the remixes are full price, but they also put out an unmixed version of each for $4.99 American. It's a good way to get some great old music on the cheap if you're new to jazzy stuff.

There is no way that DS can find the time to actually enjoy all the music he buys. :p
