I've visited a couple of other message boards and they all allow larger avatars than the 50 X 50 you guys do here. The majority of really cool animated gifs are larger than 50 X 50. They also allow banners for each member. Both can become a bit much, but larger avatars would be nice.
I think this site is really cool, but I think it could be even better if you'd consider increasing the allowable size of the avatars and maybe even allow banners.

There are a couple of problems with changing the size:
1) The bigger the image in terms of pixels the bigger it is in terms of file size and so the longer it takes to load.
2) Given that they're usually animations, there is a CPU burden too. Too many of those things can make the browser lag in displaying the page. It becomes annoying on a high-traffic site such as this.
50x50 pixels is optimal for the number of posts we allow per page on this site and so on, and so we'll have to stick with that.

Banners make threads very very annoying to read in my opinion. I'm not too fussed about bigger avatars either but that's a personal preference.
If people would be allowed to put images in signatures I'd probably turn signatures off :)
I guess the 10k size limit is staying as well?

Yeah, no plans to change anything at the moment. Everything's running smoothly and we're happy with that.
