If you were going to introduce someone (me) to the repertoire of Mike Patton, what would you recommend as openers? I've heard a couple of things Fantomas has done - some music with themes from Twin Peaks and The Omen, and that's all. He has an entire world of work out there. I don't know where to start. What would you suggest?

Mike does a good deal of work on the album. Not exactly representitive of his previous endeavors but it's a good primer before retreating into the more unusual side of Mike. Like Tomahawk. Or his Moonraker project...

lovage.
director's cut.
angel dust.
these are the only must haves i think. although ihavent heard any of his really new stuff, but that's because i saw him live with rahzel last year and it was AWFUL. if you do the mp3 stealing thing, then try and get a hold of the cover of aphex twin's 'come to daddy' that he did with dillinger escape plan. :)

Spanks, Brodes! I trust your judgement (except maybe with Razorlight because I think they're decent on that up all night album) I admire and envy your knowledge of good music.
If you think I'm kissing your ass now, you have no idea what kissage I'm capable of. But I feel embarrassed now for that CD I sent you before I knew anything about you or what you liked and knew about.

You have to buy the Ugly Casanova album! It's soooo good. Do you have an opinion on Snow Patrol?

In that case I suggest Faith No More's "who cares a lot". That's their greatest hits thing. If you like what you hear try "King for a day (fool for a lifetime)" and "Angel Dust" and then basically the rest of their albums :)
Mr Bungle, Tomahawk and his other sideprojects are usually amusing but have never really impressed me.
I love Faith No More though.

snow patrol:
i have some singles from the late nineties. aces. my favourite is the velocity girl/absolute gravity double a side. i couldnt afford to buy albums back then, so i didnt.
a friend lent me their current album. i gave it back without copying it.
i prefer the reindeer section.
i hear the singer guy is pretty decent dj.

Hmmm, yes. I never really got into his sideprojects but it always struck me as Mike Patton's ego doing weird stuff with a band whereas Faith No More was just... well... immense :)
All in my humble opinion of course.

That's the best one anyway. Nothing's Shocking is similar. Sometimes I forget which songs are on which album.

For Faith No More, check out "Angel Dust" -- it's their best album.
I'd then head to Mr. Bungle -- try "California" first. Sure, like all Mr. Bungle, it's weird, but this one is pretty accessible. It has a great beachy atmosphere. If you liked that, check out their other albums, which are admittedly much, much more... out there. (But still awesome -- "Disco Volante" is a great "headphone" album)
I'd then check out "Director's Cut" by Fantomas if you liked the songs by them that you've heard, as it's a very impressive piece of work.

Mr. Bungle has a beachy atmosphere? I assumed it was probably hard rock or even metal. I'm putting it on my list. Thank you! What I liked about Fantomas was that it was fast and hardcore but still smooth and beautiful. Some of what the Mars Volta did remind me of what Fantomas I've heard - in atmosphere.

He has nothing to do with either of them, but Fantomas has distinct elements of each in it.

Well, experimental metal is part of Mr. Bungle's overall sound. Their debut had a crazy circus/ska-influenced feel to much of it; the follow up was a creepy experimental record with a lot of whispers, shrieks, and weird interludes; and "California" was the smoothest and most song-oriented of the three. It's the only one with what I'd call a "beachy" atmosphere. Some people even said it was, in a roundabout way, a kind of a sequel to Brian Wilson's "Smile".

Although I'm not disputing mr Patton's genius... randomness doesn't imply genius.

Crazy ska tends to get on my nerves. I used to like it as a teenager. I had this boyfriend in a ska band, he also thought 311 was the greatest band ever, he had a flaming 311 tattoo, and a chin braid. *shudder* I don't know why I'm telling you this. I have heard that Smile was a good album. I don't know why I am reluctant to believe it. I like the old Beach Boys. Now I just think of their guest appearances on Full House.

Randomness alone doesn't imply genius, no. His experimentation is fearless.

I bought Mr. Bungle and I really love it, most of it. I haven't had time to let it sink in well. That usually takes me about a month, listening to it at different times. A couple of the songs on there are just so cool though, and I liked them right away, they were catchy. The first song definitely. I can tell the music is complex and interesting. Thank you for recommending it! It's a cool album.

Glad you liked it. Might give it another try seeing as I ran out of music in my playlist just now :)
