Hey yall,
Anybody into sKa music?? I started listenning to Sublime, and liked it pretty much. It got me into discovering the underground sKa scene, mostly French...
Here are some cool french bands :
Babylon circus
Marcel & son orchestre
la Ruda Salska
Los Tres Puntos
sKa-P (spanish actually)
and more into reggae/ragga/roots
8°6 crew
rude boy system
orange street
100 grammes de têtes
but the best of all surely is sKaRfAcE. These guys have a fucking good spirit. They've been touring for 10 years all around the world, releasing 1 album every year, and still never making money out of it (they just invest the albums money to promote new comming bands). They are the reference of modern sKa...
If you guys like ska'ing and jumping all day long, are just looking a way to cheer up all the time, just listen some of the bands from my selection!!
oNe sTeP bEyOnD!!!

Because it's good music for getting drunk and bouncing about.
That's the only reason I can think of.

Old school ska (circa 1964) is great stuff.
The ska revival was kinda weak.

And Madness, The (English) Beat, Bad Manners, The Selecter and a few others.... if we're talking 2nd-wave ska.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are the best of 3rd wave ska. (y)

I agree. 3rd wave could barely be considered ska in my opinion.
I'm not majorly into ska, but I listen to The Slackers every now and then. They were on One Step Beyond so you probably have heard of them. They have a Jamaican ska sound which sounds different than most of the ska around these days. I like a lot of bands that have ska influences, but I wouldn't call them a ska band. Anyway, old ska is the best.

I'm more into the late-70s ska sound myself. The 60s stuff is good too, but I feel it the most with the Madness types. :)
But yeah, The Slackers are really good as well. Definitely have a real traditional vibe to them.

Interesting to read the input here as I have really enjoyed the Mighty Mighty Bosstones in the past but have only heard a few other sKa bands and was definitely unaware of the history of sKa. I would have never known they were part of the "3rd wave of sKa". I will have to check out some of the original sKa music if I can find it. Thanks! (y)

I like the late 70s early 80s sound too, but I think my favorite would be the 60s sound. I closely resembles reggae to me. Yeah, thats why I like The Slackers. His accent is also a definite plus to the group.(y)

I've come to realize that if anyone doesn't like what I like, I like them a little less.

Amen...but the 'kinda' should be substitued with 'very'.
Do yourselves a favor and check out:
Desmond Dekker
The Ethiopians
The Skatalites (and the solo projects by members such as Don Drummond, Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook)
Justin Hinds and the Dominoes
Clancy Eccles
The Heptones
The Maytals
The Upsetters
Early Bob Marley
Harry J and the All Stars
That should be a good start if you want real ska.

i'll agree that the whole 3rd wave revival crap was pretty stupid. the real jamaican ska, however, is still wonderful to listen to. it's weird to think about how much the genre changed from that. fishbone rules
you have to be in the mood for ska.
YOU have to be in the mood for ska.
Check out "I'm in the mood for ska" by Lord Tanamo.
And yeah...I can't front on Fishbone.
