There was a guy wearing one of these at the convention I just worked! He was tying balloon animals, but I think the costume kind of backfired because most of the kids were just terrified of him.

I swear I was predicting the whole resurgence of the harem pants with cropped jacket look back in the early fall, but nobody I knew believed me. Until they started popping up in the little H&M and Zara stores. Of course, being a guy, this unique foresight really isn't of any use to me, personally.

russhie
04-10-2009, 03:29 AM
^ haha, I grabbed my first pair of harem pants just under two years ago, and my friends all laughed and called me Hammer. Now, they're eyeing off girls in clubs who rock them with platform stilettos and tight tank tops. In a job interview about 8 months ago I was asked about upcoming trends and the harem pant was my example...it has since exploded here in the last few months.

I hope the interviewer now thinks I'm really, really cool. ha!

mickill
04-10-2009, 03:35 AM
Two years? Nice. You win, I guess. It was still a pretty cutting edge observation on my part, though, I think.

To my credit, I did predict that deck shoes would come back stronger than ever, at least two years ago...and some guys are doing that. Kinda.

russhie
04-10-2009, 03:55 AM
Ha, it's no contest, your observation would have been the validation I've been looking for that harem pants were going to get real mainstream soon! I was inspired to hunt out a pair by some hippie chick in a newspaper picture so she had the inside running long before either of us. Bitch.

I really cannot get behind the harem pant trend. I can't fathom how they would even look on a real person.

that said, I do own a harem-esque jumpsuit thing that I bought for a 90's hip hop party. they look pretty much like these:

http://images.teamsugar.com/files/upl1/0/3987/23_2008/image1xl.jpg

I wore them like this, but you can pull up the waist (on the ones I have) into a tube top. I might try it out for summer...but am expecting naysayers.

the baggy crotch ones though...oof, I just...can't....

What if you have to go to the bathroom? Do you have to take the whole thing off or does it have crotch snaps?

I thought these ^ were harem pants. I used to have a pair for dress-up when I was little and I loved them and wished I could wear them all the time. They're kind of the opposite of the "harem" pants from Russhie's pictures. Both kinds actually do look like they would be very comfortable. Even when they were called "Hammer Pants", did people actually take them seriously?

Dorothy Wood
04-15-2009, 03:43 PM
I don't think people took them seriously, but I think some people thought they were cool.

there were some other kind pants that were kinda like hammer pants, but they were more like tapered knit pants that were wide at the top and folded across and buttoned. I can't find a picture. I just know that there was a girl who was a couple of grades above me in elementary school that wore them all the time and I thought she was so cool. I wanted some, but I thought they were too trendy and they showed off your butt too much.

which is weird, because my mom bought me fluorescent tie-dyed hammer pants and a matching crop top that I absolutely loved, but only wore once. with matching layered neon green and pink socks. I thought I looked awesome, my friends did not...they thought I looked presumptuous and rude.

what I wouldn't give to own that outfit now. I'd sell it to a 19 year old art student, I would.

russhie
04-16-2009, 02:36 AM
It'd depend on the bodysuit, some undo at the crotch, others don't.

All sorts of pants are being labeled 'harem' now, the ones I posted were pushed as menswear here originally by local label Material Boy, and were adopted by other labels as the look became marginally more mainstream...not claiming Material Boy as the first but their runway show and S/S collection a couple of years back did feature those sorts of pants pretty heavily. It was the first time I really remember seeing them.

Anyway now it's mostly womenswear that has that sort of cut. I think here harem pants started off as something slightly more 'hammer-esque' but the shape has mutated a bit over previous seasons - anything with tapered bottoms and a puffy/loose top can legitimately be labeled harem-ish, I guess.

I'm so bored with fashion these days. Nothing seems to inspire me anymore. I feel lost, scattered, and without a home. I don't like anything in the old places I used to shop. I find myself interested only in the completely impractical avant garde that I admire from afar but wouldn't think of trying to incorporate into my real life.

This is what I like to see. Of course I couldn't, and wouldn't, wear anything like this. But everything else just seems so boring. Even farther reaching attempts like harem pants bore me. I would rather dress in the utter basics or the most flamboyant, out-there, style.

nodanaonlyzuul

although I'm not incredibly fashion forward, nothing in stores interests me anymore either. Nothing at all.

I am starting to take claritin (I have severe dust allergies) and venturing through various thrift stores. I probably would have more in the past, but I lack the patience to sift through things (and that whole dust allergy thing, it really is THAT bad). Now I am forcing myself to have patience and eat medication to be able to do it, because all the new fashion sucks.

Haven't been there in years. I was addicted to their brunch for a long time. My favorite time to be there was when it was cloudy. Something about white tables and silver against soft clouds in the sky that goes so well together. Almost like a reserved table in heaven.

The only thing that steered me away in the end was the price. They rasied it two times while I lived there, and the last time was a bit too much.

The lounge can be a bit pricey too. Dorothy's table of 4 drinks was probably $50 in the end.

Fancy pants in the fashion thread!
