View Full Version : Bought Mesmerize today..
but haven't listened to it yet.
the case is weirdly setup - my guess is cause it's only one half of the real album (so to speak).
umm yeah - who else has it and what do they think?

yea same here. At first I got and thought every song had its moments but I only really loved like half the CD. Now I basically love it all except Cigaro, which is slowly becoming a guilty pleasure song. Question!, Lost in Hollywood, and Soldier Side (damn they should have made a real song out of that) are my faves but I really like everything on there.

think?
Play it now, bitch!
I can't put into words how, but it differs a whole lot from Toxicity. It's not a bad thing though. (y)

I purchased it yesterday, I love the song Cigaro, as well as Old School Hollywood.

Mezmerize is only 11 tracks, which means there's really no filler. It's 36 minutes of insane metal goodness. One of my favourite albums so far this year, and I'm really looking forward to Hypnotize.

A friend of mine played it in the car and it kicked ass! I got the album on Friday but I haven't listened to my copy yet. After I finish with Kaiser Chiefs, some Simon & Garfunkel... then I'll get to SOAD and hear it without the commentary of my friends going: "Wow, this kicks ass!" and "Whoa, Serj is a fuckin' genius" every 10 seconds. ;)

When will Hypnotize come out?
i hear hypnotize comes out 6 months after mez.
listened to it a couple of times now.
radio/video is the only song i skip - dunno why but i don't like the chorus.
it is indeed totally different than SOAD/Toxicity... but it is good.
favourite song is probably "this cocaine.....................etc" haha love that "gonaahrea gorgonzola" bit.

thing is Serj ain't the song writer. Daron is...

Whoa, Serj is a fuckin' genius
Yeah Tzar that's right, it's Daron who's the (evil?) musical genius.
Although Serj has clearly got a lot going on upstairs, too. I think he's the major political force in the band.
Let's put it this way. Daron is kind of the Adrock of SOAD. Serj is like MCA. And it takes the two others to equal one Mike D.

Daron and Serj's voices are perfect together. Serj can do a bunch of goofy voices and screams, while Daron sounds like a goblin.

I'm a new fan to System of a Down, so let me try to get this right- Serj is the guitarist who doesn't sing in BYOB until the 2nd chorus and Daron is the singer who has curly long hair and a beard. Or do i have it backwards?

thing is Serj ain't the song writer. Daron is...
Their words, not mine. ;)
In this context, it was more in reference to Serj's vocals than songwriting. Did Serj have opera training? I've heard that he did...

Ok i think that explains that i must have had it backwards- because in BYOB the lead singer does the opera-ish thing ("la la la la la la la la la OOooh")

Serj is the dude with the curly hair and the goatee and the really deep, operatic voice. Daron is the dude with the bug-eyes and the really intensely weird high-pitch voice. Daron plays guitar and is the main songwriter. IMO Serj's lyrics are lightyears better than Daron. Daron is responsible for poetic depth like "My cock is much bigger than yours" and the "Everybody Fucks/Everybody Sucks" rhyme scheme. Serj has got shit like "You switched the signs then you closed our blinds,
You changed the channel then you changed our minds." IMO there is no comparison. I like Daron's singing with Serj, but i think he should stay away from lyrics.

i totally agree.
i always think the lead vocalist of any band should be the song-writer. they're the ones who are gonna spit them out.

well i mean daron has always been the songwriter in terms of music, just not lyrics. idk if thats what you meant.

well i meant lyrics.
give Serj control of the lyrics.
let both of them write the 'songs' - they haven't gone wrong there.

Speaking of that, the song "A.D.D." is awesome, one of my favorite SOAD songs. In fact, the whole Steal This Album is great.
I don't mind if Daron writes lyrics, but I know Serj has a lot to say. I do think Daron should minimize the singing -- Serj is "the voice" of System Of A Down.
Daron, on the other hand, might consider attending the Center For Guitarists Who Can't Sing Good... Uh, kidding -- he's obviously a musical genius. But what's with the weird Charles Manson obsession?
P.S. I like the "Everybody fucks/Everybody sucks" part. It's damn funny.

I like Daron's lyrics because they're completely insane. 'Tony Danza Cuts in Line', you'd have to be a genius to write something like that.

There is a certain element of humor to them, I mean i laughed when i heard cigaro. but then the novelty wore off and i missed the poetic serj stuff.

yeah same here.
i think we can all agree we'd rather listen to Serj sing and write all the songs. :D
no matter how much we like all the members; Serj should be in control of vocals. he writes them nicely.

that sounds like something my crazy friend Kirk would come up with.
the ironic part is that system of a down is his favorite band.
'Tony Danza Cuts in Line', you'd have to be a genius to write something like that.
Kirk said that yesterday.
