How sad that you couldn't stretch your brain enough to think of a single female role model.

Heh, I was gonna point out the absurdity of Placing Michael Jordan and Mel Gibson alongside Ghandi and Mandela. But the glaring absence of any women is an excellent point, Peachy.

I think it's interesting to put them alongside eachother.

Would you prefer your kid to be a peaceful leader but poor as a pauper, an important political figure that was pivotal in the independence of black people in south africa but spent many many years in jail, a hugely succesful sports person that has more money than the pope, a witty actor that is loved by all etc etc.

I think it's natural for a parent to want the best for his/her child and as much as I'd want my kid to be a good person and do good it would kill me to see him killed, starve to death or in jail. Plus Gibson and Jordan aren't evil or anything...

I don't want my children to be like any of those people.

It is of course important to teach kids to celebrate their own individual talents and abilities, but having role models is not the same thing as 'copying' someone, per se. Role models provide examples and illustrations, and are a sort of prism through which developing children can view their own potential.

For example, there is a drive in the UK (quite probably in areas of other countries as well, I should imagine) to recruit young black men into the teaching profession, with the goal ultimately to have more black male teachers in urban centres with high minority populations. This isn't because, say, young white females can't teach in these areas competently or even excellently - many do, every day. But it is recognised that there is a value in having some black and aisian male teachers in the educational environment, as they reflect back to the student population a role model of an educated, professional, involved black man.

alright, its time for a comeback

Mel Gibson was the most accurate movie as his portrayal of Satan. the movie wasn't that good, in that is was really gorry, mel gibson loves the violence which doesn't make him a saint. Signs was one of his best movies though. I bought that one.

Princess Diana was a great queen, it too bad she was killed off cause of her move to Islam. Ghandhi's female offspring are good politicians

I am a guy, not a girl

Micheal Jordan was awesome, as an athlete.

Yeah, I thought for sure you'd have a separate womens list, like:

1. Hilary Clinton
2. Gabrielle Reese
3. Mother Theresa
4. Brittney Spears
5. Julia Roberts
6. Cheryl Crow
7. Condoleeza Rice
8. Princess Diana

I, myself, would pick none of the above either way.

Although I could see why Jordan and (to a lesser extent) Gibson belong in that list I really really struggle to cope with Brittney Spears and Mother Theresa in the same list :(

Hey, I just through (somewhat) comparable names to the other list.
Sort of.
I guess I wanted a little variety, too. Some moms may WANT their kids to be like Brittney

you consider people like doctor martin luther king and ghandi celebrities. i consider them role models. but if you got too much like ghandi, youd just be considered a hippie.

Yeah, I see your point. War protestors I don't particulary trust. But there are bullshit wars and those wars are worth protesting. If a war is just then I am pro-war. If its adoph hitler, hell yeah I will go to war and fight em, count me in.

What about that robot that vacuums the floor. Let's make some baby steps first. Lower goals means higher perceived achievement.
