Here is a local artist I predict big things for!

He was my brother's classmate in high school and he puts on some good rap (as well as bootleg remixes of Beastie Boys, Death From Above 1979, Gwen Stefani, etc.)

http://www.cadenceweapon.com/

Seriously, give this a chance. Hell, even those snobs at Pitchfork enjoy his mixtape album! He was also paid to remix a song by Lady Sovereign (who is a British rapper) for Island UK Records.

http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/c/cadence-weapon/cadence-weapon-is-the-black-hand.shtml

Also, he's just signed to the Toronto indie label Upper Class Records so his stuff will be more widely available than it is now.

Hip-hop heads, any thoughts?

He's good.

Good producer, nice MC.

The writing isn't spectacular but he has good flow, and I like his beats.

Keep in mind that he was 18 when he recorded most of what you're hearing (he's 19 now), so there's still plenty of room for improvement. I'm looking forward to his proper album that he's releasing sometime later this year. (y)

Just so you know, his debut album ("Breaking Kayfabe") is out. At least in Canada. Should be in the U.S. early next year...

Actually I just read about this dude in Macleans (a popular Canadian magazine FYI). Just mentioned about how lots of people can make movies, music, etc.

Here's a great article on Cadence Weapon in "Exclaim!" magazine. It's a good read:

As you're listening to him, just remember that me and James knew him (and his music) loooooooooong before he becomes world famous. ;)

If you ever do get to see Cadence Weapon next time around, tell him that you know Brett & James Lambert in Edmonton. I'm sure his mind would be blown. :)

Brett said I met him when I was ridiculously drunk in Alberta, but I think I would have remembered if I met a black man in Edmonton.

I saw him live when he opened for Buck65 in montreal back in april. the kid definately works his ass off on stage. and he did his absolute damndest to get the entire theatre dancing evening without a dance floor.
