how come the beastie boys are not so popular anymore? there are only a few people in my school who even like them. i am definitly the biggest bboy fan in my school and probably the only one who listens to them seriously. it pisses me off how little support they have here in vermont

The six-year hiatus probably had something to do with it.

I knew teenagers who loved their music in the 90s but who are not into them now. ("They're just not that into them.")

I think that particular demographic maybe has short-term focus when it comes to pop stuff.

They have such a worldwide underground following at this point in time... Mainstream listeners cant get with it because, most radio stations will only play old ass "license to ill"... Just keep on listening, and forget the ones that dont...

Beastie Boys get respect from most people I know, all ages, races, creeds, sexual orientations. As far as liking their music, most people I know like the old stuff like LTI & PB. Their style is so versatile and switches up so often, that they seem to pick up fans and lose fans from album to album. B-boy lovers will always stick with them and support them. I'm 31, and still enjoy their music but not as much as when I was in high school. They still make good videos and do alot of benefits towards good causes, so they get mad love over here. It's all about the music though...

They're still popular, just not as big as when they first came out. I know alot of people who like them, not as much as me though. :p I think not a lot of kids like them because they like all these new people coming out like 50 cent and shit. But I pretty much agree with all of the above.

i think the beasties are not interested in creating new fans, more likely just wanting to please old fans. Otherwise they would've created some bullshit mainstream album to please the masses, but they have too much talent to do something like that. Unlike 50 fucking cent.

Tell me do american beasties fans hate him as much as us australian fans???

Like any band that doesn't come out with new stuff every other year, the mainstream loses interest, die hards never go away! With every album BB have bought out they probably sell a fair few to first time BB album buyers, then because of how the BB have operated in the last few years, the one off buyer moves on to something else. Let's not forget, I think had Mike D not had his accident, an album would probably have dropped 3 years ago.

Yes I agree, but they probably don't mind having new fans. I'm a new fan, and I've been all stuck up their ass for about a year. :p Not literally. Anyway, alot of the people I know are all into their Licensed To Ill album. I'll say "Do you like the Beastie Boys?" or something, and they'll be like "Hell yeah! You Gotta Fight...for your right...to paaaaaarrttty!!". :p But some my age will be like "Beastie what?" but my best friend hates them because I'll mention them alot. So most American fans either have respect for them, like them, or don't know them. Some may hate them for some odd reason, but I'm not sure about how many Australian fans.

I like it better this way, anyhow. I hate liking something that everyone else does, or liking something that everyone pretends to be a hardcore fan of.

its like that here in michigan to. the only people i know of who like the beastie boys at my school are my art teacher and some 8th grade teacher. i found out that the 8th grade teacher liked them because i ran into her at their show at cobo (!) all the kids tease me about liking them. my friend kathy only likes fight for your right because i introduced them to her!!

i believe that the Beastie's arent for everyone......if they were they would have been played out, sold out, and would be "has beens" along time ago,....as someone said earlier, i like being a fan of a band that not everybody is fond of. That is what keeps us fans on edge waiting for new shit from old school'rs ....that play in a new school......that's very rare in Hip-Hop....and something tells me that they're not done!!

In the meantime, we tend to still rock a LTI...or get high to PB.....or groove to CYH.....and IC......or get taken back to school on HN.....and remember the city that suffered, survived, and still stands up straight with a strong b-boy stance, swaying TT5B representing the U.S.A.

The Beastie Boys not only produce GREAT music, they represent some of the good times in my life and make my music world a lot better (along with countless other musicians.....but the b-boys stand out like a sore pinky on an old school pimp). The real fans could only understand that.

So don't be pissed off at the people who are not down with the Beasties, be happy for yourself and your fellow b-boy fans on this MB. Your not alone!!

go ahead!! Bust out that CrAzY B-bOy StAnCe!!!

Hi, my name is "Weezman", aannd uumm?!......im a BEASTIE-BOYS fan!!! :p

i think it has something to do with that whole thing about Mike getting into a fight with a baby seal a few years back.

ive noticed that people who know and like good music seem to like the beasties. they understand the important role they've played in the rap game and they respect them for that. however, they also have heard more then just fight for your right like the mainstream kids and realise they have a lot of talent.

however, i think its sorta hard for a band like the beasite to have mainstream fans who perhaps aren’t as knowledgeable about rap as most of us are. for example, i only became a big fan early last year when i bought pauls boutique, however i only bought it because i was going through a phase where I started researching and buying lots of old skool classic rap albums, and when I heard about pauls boutiques impressive sample based sound scape i had to hear it. i mean, i know people who claim they love the beastie boys and have license and hello nasty but when ive mentioned pauls boutique they’ve said ‘don’t u mean paul revere?’ they are clueless about it and its as if people just buy albums which feature songs played on mtv without delving deeper. as well as that we all know the beasties have produced very different records and some style of songs (for example, fight for your right) are a lot easier to get into on first listen then something from check you head or ill com. i had heard all the boys albums before i checked out those two and when i did, i really didn’t like them, it took me a while before they grew on me and mainstream fans are mainstream because they listen to the most accessible music available to them. if this wasn’t the case, then pauls boutique would be their most popular album, not licensed to ill. i think because the boys haven’t realised an album in ages its had an impact on the mainstream fans as mentioned already, but also the old skool style of the album is sorta unappealing to the masses when most of them don’t know anything about rap before eminem and would probably rather listen to 50cent rapping about bitches and guns then 3 men pushing 40 rapping about sasquatch and politics. its sad but true.

also, an interesting thing ive noticed is that most people who i know who dont like them think their annoying because of adrock and mike d's high pitched, loud raps. i know i wasnt too keen on ad rock at first, well when listening to licence to ill for the first time. i found him annoying, but these days i cant imagine being annoyed by his voice at all because im so used to it. however, a lot of people hear something and don’t like it and don’t bother giving it the chance to see if it will grow on them.

I don't know why more people don't like them, either. I'm also one of the few people in my school who listen to the Beastie Boys. Some ridiculous people don't even know who they are. It blows my mind. But, I must agree with brmanuk. Everything you said made a lot of sence, and I think you are completely right. Whenever I'm with my friends and we're listening to Hello Nasty they'll keep telling me to play Intergelagtic over and over. I love that song, but there are much better songs on the c.d. that they won't even give a chance. Same with Ill Communications. I love B-Boys Makin' with the Freak Freak and Root Down, but my friends just can't seem to get into them and I can't see why. But, ey, to each his own, right?

I have a Beastie Boys shirt from the 2005 pageant, and I've had three teachers in my school comment on it - they are all in their 30s and male, and listened to them in college.

One was like "oh, Ill Communication, I lived on that album. Root Down: best song ever. Sabotage: best video ever".

They're popular here. At least, eveyone I've spoken to about them knew of them, and most knew their music relatively well. Especially the kids at school. Hell, I'm a new fan- I just got into them with their last album.

I think its because no one really wants to take the time to listen to them. I know that my friends dont listen to them and when I talk about them they just say "they suck". They never listened to them and they automatically hate them just from hereing their name. If people actually would take the time to sit and listen to their music, I bet they would have twice as many fans than they do now.

It's an honor to be one of the select who truly enjoy the boys.

You've either get it or you just completely miss it.

Be happy you're on the good team.

It's because some people don't recognise/appreciate general talent, because said talented people take a few years in between records to make their next one a la the beasties, as opposed to taking a few months off then hopping straight back into the studio to force feed their latest unimaginative crap down the collective masses' throats.

Additionally, the aforementioned people get a lot more radio exposure, in australia at least, where people like the beasties rarely get much playtime, and when they do it's usually just to coincide with their latest album
