I hear you, Miramanee, but I don't agree with all of your points.

Say it's April and the boys posted more details about why they cancelled the shows and that they're on hiatus. Just hypothetical. Now what? Would they have to update that in May and then June and then when just to give the impression of freshness on the site?

They do have a relationship with fans and the Web site can be used to nurture that relationship if they choose to. But I don't think it's necessarily wrong for bands to become more active in general (regardless of the medium--appearances, concerts, Web site updates and posts) just to promote their latest effort.

Don't get me wrong--I would love to see updates here. But I don't want to see filler stuff just for the sake of appearances. I don't think it's their obligation to do that.

It's funny but I was thinking about this today because I'm frustrated about another band's website and lack of tour info.

I realize that no artist owes me anything. Even if I've been a loyal fan for a long time. But from a business standpoint, it makes no sense at all to piss off the fans when it's pretty easy to keep them somewhat satisfied--especially given the fact of the internet. I mean, it was more challenging when fan clubs had to operate by mail.

If you as an artist decide to have a website and you have a long term career (or want to) how hard is it to throw your hard core fans a bone now and then? If you make it really difficult for even hard core fans to find out stuff like tour information--which you should really want them to have--then you either have a fucked up management situation or you really don't give a shit.

As for this website, like M said, it doesn't come down to Minton or tpk, because it's not their job. But the way Beastie Boys rolled out tour dates last time was about as stupid as I can imagine. When someone as motivated to see the band as I was had to work so damn hard to see them live and with so little warning, someone really messed things up. That, together with the strange and icky ending to the tour, made me wonder whether they ever had any interest in the tour at all. I mean, what is the deal?

It's maybe not fair, but I guess I have higher expectations for the Beastie Boys than I do for say, the Rolling Stones, who have clearly never given a shit about their fans.

P.S. In the alternative, maybe just get rid of all the dated info on the main page so it's less obvious that the site (and band) is shut down. Just have a link to beastiemania in case some random newbie stumbles in wanting basic info. :D

The tour did end badly. I don't think anyone disputes that. And it would have been nice to have known exactly what happened to force those events. I think it was very personal and we'll never know. End of the story.

I also think that just because there's an easy way to get info out (this Web site) doesn't necessarily means that every band has to take advantage of that medium.

I help to run, administer, and maintain a 30,000 page Web site. For a big arm of the site, it's not easy to find new stuff to post just to keep things looking/feeling current or to throw the readers a bone. We talk about this frequently--the topic comes up at least once a week and we never really come to agreement about it.

I know the BB site is much smaller and they could have been appeasing fans these few months with updates or appearances, granted, but I don't think they're about that--appeasing people.

I like that if they don't have anything [they want] to say, they don't necessarily talk.

Not trying to convince you to come to my side. Just trying to represent how I feel about this.

I think it's easy to come up with updates for a band's web site. Writing content for web sites is part of what I have done professionally for years. (I do publicity/creative services for musicians.)

And about how things ended wrt updates...I only came onto the site in the middle of the TT5B stuff, so I don't know what it was like beforehand. Were they much more in touch with this place during the six year hiatus?

I don't buy it. And anyway, that answer doesn't make sense because why tour at all then?

I must say, we're a funny group of fans, what with us coming to it at different times and for different reasons and frankly we're not even fans of the same band. And we don't even have expectations, just some minimal hope (ex. we see you shooting a video and we hope to see it some day). All in all, they're pretty fucking lucky.


My job has a website too. I have nothing to do with it. I'm sure it gets more visitors than this place. We're all about getting the knowledge out there. When I remember to go there now and then I'm surprised at all the stuff we're doing. :p

My comments really stem from my own curiousity. Because today when you see a band that has a website full of stale info, it's often because they aren't sure they are a band anymore. You get a bad vibe. And lord knows that I wasn't trying to reopen old wounds about the cancelled dates. I don't want any personal info (I've assumed they never intended to play those dates at all). I wanted one official announcement of "tour's over, it was nice seeing you all" instead of just no news and rumor about whether there might be more dates.

This threat of "if the fans are too demanding they'll just take their toys and go home" gets nowhere with me. While I don't expect jack shit for my long term fandom, I have a right to express my opinion without being subjected to emotional blackmail. That threat has never come from the band or the admins here. Their reputation for not selling out, standing up for this or that cause, being fairly intelligent guys, etc., has probably resulted in their fans having all sorts of expectations for them that might make things difficult. I think they can handle the pressure. :rolleyes:

This is so true, I was thinking about this recently and how it makes for an interesting community - and tension - here on the boards.

As for the pool, I'll go with August 26 (hubby's birthday). While it would be nice to have some news on the site while they're on hiatus (or whatever), it's not necessary. Heck, Jonathan Richman isn't on the internet in any way, shape or form. I imagine he doesn't even have a computer in his house, or an email address. Each artist connects with his or her audience in his or her own way.

Besides, I doubt Sasquatch is very accomodating about any requests they might be making to get news out on the web site when there is music to be made and video games to be played up in his cave. ;)

I come here for current information too. I don't consider information posted four months ago current.

The purpose of the web site is to communicate information to the fans. When a band doesn't update its web site, fans infer one of two things: (1) the band isn't doing anything any more (i.e., broken up or on hiatus) or (2) the band doesn't give a dang about its fans and keeping them informed. Both are negative.

I have to say I agree with this. The Beasties have always kept a low profile I guess but I think it is unfair on the fans to just go AWOL as they have without any updates or anything.

Jurassic 5 have done a similar thing and it's just very disheartening. Unfortunately for them their fan base is smaller and accordingly their message board is slowly dying.
