When I'm engaged in bookbinding I wield my trusty bone folder. It is a humble yet mighty tool. My bone folder becomes an extension of my hand and I can fold, score, cut, smooth, make things adhere to one another like they should. I've even started using it for printmaking (in place of a spoon or baren for block printing).

The photo is near-life size. A hair large but pretty close.
So how 'bout it? Show us your axes, your decks, your cameras, your spray paint cans... you know how artists are about our tools. (y) Let's see em.

Thanks! I was able to call up Singer and find out the actual day it was made. (It's written down around here somewhere...)
It's a 127 model, which was made for quite a long time so there are lots of them out there. It needs either a new motor or a treadle, because turning the balance wheel with the palm of my hand ain't gonna cut it much longer... my preference is a treadle.

wow, you lost me. :o
BGirl
06-03-2005, 12:57 PM
The treadle is a platform-type thing near the floor you move up & down with your foot... it's supposed to be attached to the balance wheel (the big round thing on the right) with a belt so it can turn the balance wheel and er, put the machine in motion. But when my Grandma Bea (my great-grandmother) had the motor installed, they took off the treadle. I guess this was a common thing to do at the time ('50s?). But now the motor is out of service, its cord had to be cut in the moving - though it was so corroded I wouldn't have trusted it anyway. So in the meantime I can just turn the balance wheel with the palm of my hand but it's awkward and results in a sore and tired upper arm. :(

I'll share another photo. This is my board shear. It's basically a heavy-duty paper cutter that can cut binder's board - that stuff that hardcover books are made of (technically the hard cover of a book is called a "case"). It was a Big Deal to get this for my lil bindery.

Hey, what happened to my thread?!
Just playin. Since you brought it up, yeah, hubby had to explain the Axe ad concept to me. :o And also, one day I was on the L (doin' swell) and this lady right in front of me was talking to her visiting friend (possibly her mother) in a loud, boastful manner about her other friend who was responsible for the Axe ads. It made me laugh a little to myself, as if anyone around would be impressed about the Axe ads.. I just smiled and went back to my book.
b-grrrlie, I was hoping you would post up in here! :D And you posted books - <3. Yes, they are tools, aren't they. Hubby is the resident gardener and his collection of gardening books is becoming large enough that they need a proper home (shelf). When I get some better light I think I'll take a pic of my office bookshelf, inspired by yours, thank you!
In the meantime I'll join in on the nerdiness.

I think sometimes there's some truth to the expression "The clothes make the (wo)man."
I sat on a grand jury here in 2003 (19 days, who knows how many cases - 5-7 a day? maybe more? it's hazy now), we should have a beer and trade war stories when you & Dr. Deaf make that trip to NYC ;) Or would we not be allowed? I've only ever told people about the cases in vague terms - no names or locations (as if I'd remember all those names).
And back to the sentiment above, I remember the cops in street clothes vs. the ones in uniform - WHAT a difference the clothes make... for real.
