I love the Arctic Monkeys. yes they are overly hyped, but the songs are good enough, make you want to bounce about.

1 thing's a bit of a pity though: A couple of months ago i downloaded what i thought was their debut album, called 'beneath the boardwalk'. This however was only a demo album thing. But imho the demo versions of most of the songs sound better than the more polished album versions.
And songs like 'bigger boys and stolen sweethearts', 'choo choo' and 'knock a door run' arn't on the album :(

And what I think is completely rediculous:
their concerts over here were sold out really quickly, and when i heard the recordings of it, half the venue was full with english people. WTF, go see them at home so us dutchies can get a chance to see them live as well!

The killers disappeared because they actually were total shite. Americans trying to be british. A dude with eyeliner called Flowers? puh-lease...
i believe the hype in england is way bigger than it is over here, and maybe they wont last long, but this album they made is good. Nothing new, but it's catchy. Probably I'll be tired of it too in a couple of months time, but right now I'm spreading the monkey love :)

nice jams. a tad-over-rated though...

I really liked Scummy or whatever it's called now. As well as Fake Tales, Mardy Bum, A Certain Romance.

Agreed with roosta over The Killers not disappearing. They're still pretty mega-huge and I reckon their new album (whenever that's released) will sell more copies than Hot Fuss.

I personally cannot stand the Shed Seven tribute band, but they're still as big as ever.

As for the Monkeys, fair play to them. They're all the same age as me and are already living their dream AND richer than me. :(

I think their music is mediocre, though.

Just because a band is over-rated doesn't mean they aren't good. The Arctic Monkeys sound fresh and new, especially compared to all the generic sounding 2-note indie shit that's clogging up the charts today.

HOLY FAWK... you are so correct.

I was in love with another version of "fake tales." Then today I pick up the album, and the album versions sounds horrid!!!!

Especially the vocals, the new mixes seem to fuck everything up.

Yeah I really loved the original version of Fake Tales, not the Beneath the Boardwalk one but the Five Minutes With Arctic Monkeys one (their first 2-song demo). But I do like it in the new album version how he says "oh you've saved me she screams down the line, the band were fuckin wank an I'm not havin a nice time". (y)

LONDON (Reuters) - The Arctic Monkeys, who first built a loyal following on the Internet, smashed the record for the fastest-selling UK debut album on Sunday.

The Sheffield rockers, who have already had two number one singles, released their album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" on January 23. It has since sold over 363,700 copies.

The Arctic Monkeys played their first gigs in 2003, handing out their demos to fans who posted them on a Web site, before signing with the independent label Domino. A spokesman for the company said they were very proud.

"A band like this comes along maybe once every 10 years and I think their words and energy has struck a cord with the British public," the spokesman told Reuters.

Drederick Tatum

man, if Domino wasn't rolling in the cash before they sure will be now. but that's a solid label for sure.

ok how about kings of leon. they had a few hits then fell right down the shitty downward spiral of musical mushyness after there second album then faded into the background.

what are you talking about? their second album, made in under a year, was widely regarded as better than the first, and the UK tour to promote that album (consisting of around 20 dates) sold out completely. They then went on to play festivals over the summer and are now, i presume, simply taking a break.

Because as soon as someone like you doesn't like an 'indie' band, it's instantly labelled 'two note shite'. the white stripes, for example, 'the melodys and drumbeats are so simple, it must be shit!'

since when does the amount of notes or simplicity of a song make a difference to how good it is. for example 'the drugs don't work' by the verve: that song had four chords in it, yet was a UK number 1 and a brilliant song, no less.

that's why i think you're an idiot for saying that.

The Arctic Monkeys are nothing special. They offer nothing new to the music industry in terms of originality, yet they are making music we've been hearing for the last 5 years. Fair play to them but, as I've said, I've heard this sort of music from hundreds of bands.

If you want to listen to good 'indie' bands, check out Spoon. Spoon are probably the most underrated band in terms of popularity ever. Time and time again, they produce music that is different to their previous efforts, pushing the boundaries each time.

The Arctic Monkeys will fade when they release their next album as it will be exactly the same as their first. There isn't enough at their disposal to suggest otherwise, except for their age.

i never said the opposite of any of these things. the reason i called you an idiot is because of the 'two note' remark you made. i felt it was an idiotic thing to say, i have explained why in my earlier post.

I have listened to the album about 6 times and i have to say its tremendous. I was a bit dubious and have kind of heard it all before when it comes to young english guitar bands but its really surprised me how good the album is.
Its full of energy - really tight sound from the band - great lyrics - funny, angry and there were bits that sounded like the stone roses, the jam, the clash and loads of other great british bands - i just hope they carry it on for a few more albums.

I did buy the album, I must confess..
I like them, not as nme, but they arent that bad.
I am looking to see them on stage, that's the real test: if they're good performers. I dont care if they sold 350.000 or 10.000 copies in a week.

but I have to say that it is horrible to see those young guys with so much pressure: hope they'll not exploid before the second album..

and finally: yes, they're overrated.. but its the business!

laura
02-13-2006, 10:46 AM
about the killers: I never liked them..

but its so true that there's nothing really good coming from US..
exception for clap your hands..
canadians bands seems much more better... most of brits band have a contract with a record company because there's a huge scene (domestic market is huge!)!!

Actually they're not taking a break, they just toured australia and played to sold out venues, aswell as on the big day out tour. They are still awesome.

The arctic monkeys are alright, but "bet that you look good on the dancefloor" is a pretty generic track ala "rock and roll queen" by the subways.

The killers are really rather poor live, which puts me off (ive seen them at the leeds festival) and the arctic monkeys, atleast they sound fresh at the minute. Fuck originality, songs are all notes played in different orders at different pitches anyway, a good song is a good song. Get over your selves, "Ooo, i'm so high and mighty i only like bands that no-ones heard of" i like alot of underground music, but i can appriciate when a good band breaks through and makes it big.

Bob dylans first record was hardly original, was that crap? The new york dolls and (some) MC5 were just playing music from the 50's amped up, who cares? It was good shit. How can you judge a band off 1 album? I like the kings of leon too. The one band i never liked was the strokes, not cause they wern't original (which they wern't) i just don't like the lofi sound of the singing.

Arctic Monkeys are coming in italy in may to perform for the first time.

last saturday I went to a club close to my place where many new bands performed in the last two years (kaiser chiefs, maximo park, bloc party..but also people like interpol-twice!-)
and I got the chance to talk a bit with the owner.
I asked him why he didnt book arctic monkeys (I knew he's interested) and
he said: we've a venue for 1000 people, I cant ask for a too expensive ticket. the two venues they'll perform have bigger capacity..
I said: come on, that's not the first good debut band coming here
he said: they're too expensive, they cost 25.000 euros
I said:
