View Full Version : Does Anyone Actually LISTEN To The Ramones?

Don't get me wrong. A song of theirs now and again is a nice break from the rest of my stuff. But would anyone listen to the Ramones for say 30 minutes straight?

And do the kids wearing Ramones t-shirts actually listen to the band? Or is it just a fashion statement?

no. well, i seriously doubt they've heard more than 3 of their songs. it's a damn shame. i actually really like listening to them. the short, simpleness is breath of fresh air.

I, for one, love the Ramones. The simplicity is where their brilliance comes from. They are masters at creating catchy garage punk tunes without having to insert ridiculous guitar solos and heavy production. However, I dont listen to them for much more than a few songs at a time.

But as far as the kids in ramones t-shirts, you are dead-on. My friend loves the Ramones and he saw a guy in a local nightclub in a ramones t-shirt and he went up to him and said "The Ramones rock!!!" and the guy is like "What? Theres actually a band called the Ramones, I thought they were just cartoon characters??" (I'm talking about the road to ruin album cover t-shirt here). Now that is just plain ignorance, so yes its a definite fashion statement.

Ummm... I've listened to them for 30 minutes straight (the usual span of one Ramones album). Listening to all their albums back to back to back? That I've never done.

For the record, I wear a Ramones T-shirt and it's not as a fashion statement for me. If I wear a shirt of a band, you bet I actually listen to them. I don't understand people like Shania Twain (yes, HER) who would actually wear a Ramones T-shirt or a CBGB shirt. It's not as if her watered down country-pop music owes a debt to that scene.

I have about 30 Ramones songs on my ipod, and I'll enjoy them when they come up on random play, but I would never, ever decide to play Ramones songs like I would The Clash or Rancid or some other band. I think maybe because so many of the songs sound the same?

I have been dying to ask the kids in the Ramones shirts to name two Ramones or three songs. And I probably will. :D

There are so many posers who pretend to like a band because they think it's cool. I was thinking about it because I hit a used vinyl store today and they have all these mint copies of critically praised bands, and it's always the case, because people bought the records but no one actually listened to them. But the compilations of 70s pop hits were awfully worn out.

See, I know that you would actually listen to The Ramones, but you should be aware that you will look like a poser in your Ramones or CBGB shirt.

And how did CBGBs get in financial trouble anyway when they sell so many shirts?

Yeah I would choose the clash or rancid over the ramones any day.

If you're going to buy a shirt of a band that's considered cool, why not go the extra mile and LISTEN to them as well? I just don't see the logic and it's not that hard...

I would gladly listen to a Ramones album the entire way through, but I wouldn't have a Ramones marathon. I would have a Clash marathon indeed! (y)

P.S. - Sometimes I see teenage girls wear T-shirts of "The Goonies." Sometimes I wonder if they're truly fans of the movie or were they just told that was a cool '80s revivalist thing to do...

The Ramones fucking suck.
I gotta agree. They are way overrated.

I didn't actually think people wore band shirts of bands they don't like. I thought that was a fashion statement with only celebrities like Britney Spears. Although it would be understandable with a band like The Sex Pistols. I've noticed trendy clothing brands that issue shirts with pictures of the sex pistols on it.

I dont own any actual ramones' albums but "judy is a punk" and "I wanna be your boyfriend" are my personal favorite tracks of theirs

This reminds me that at the book store yesterday, I saw a coffee table book on punk in the music section. I started giggling uncontrollably.

I remember that in the early shout outs posted in the tour blog, there was a mom who brought her little girl to a Beasties show wearing a Ramones t-shirt and I felt bad for the kid. The mom was trying to coach the kid to say that Johnny had died.

Judy is a Punk is probably their best song. If only for the part where they say the second verse will be the same as the first. :)

Never really got into The Ramones. A lot of their songs are so similar.

Anyway, a bit off topic, I have never purchased or worn a band t-shirt. Ever.

CBGB's = Country BlueGrass Blues

I just resently bought my first Ramones cd, the double compilation one, I've only had everything on vinyl and to tell the truth I listen to vinyl only on special occations. It took me three listens to go through all the tracks.
I've never had a Ramones T-shirt, I used to have a long-sleeved black and red striped shirt that was my "Ramones-shirt", I always wore it to their gigs.

I like The ramones but I don't wear their t-shirts and i don't use bags of them either. I really like the ramones, i think they are an excelent band and the songs are great, I don't listen to them 30 minutes but maybe 4 songs a day o watch a video is ok.

I thought people wore those shirts because the ramones have been so influential to groups like the sex pistols and the clash, not because anyone still listens to their albums.

I saw the Ramones at a small club/ bar in Philly called "The Chestnut Cabaret"
It held about 200 people.
The stage was about 2feet higher than the floor and I was in the front row.
I was no further then 6 feet away from all of them during the show.
One of the most intense/ insane shows I've ever been to.

I've listened to their entire albums a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself a punk-rocker, I just appreciate music that is real.

I'm a complete Ramones moron. Just last month I stumbled across "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" and listened to it at least 20 times in a row, almost a full half an hour, the song clocks in at 1 minute 35 seconds. It is fucking GREAT! They dominate in all respects, especially the really stupid songs.

Lyrics are so over-rated, yet genius often neglected. The Ramones are/were so much more than a punk rock band.

Here is a link to my favorite album review ever, especially the first two paragraphs, it is from the 70's, nothings changed; link (http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/album/_/id/121860/theramones?pageid=rs.ArtistDiscographyMainReleases&pageregion=mainRegion)

As I clicked on the link, I thought, "it's going to be a Charles M. Young one." :D I don't remember reading it before. Sweet.

I knew it would be Young because he was the only writer at Rolling Stone in my reading lifetime who (1) had a sense of humor and (2) appreciated hard rock and/or punk. Young's the main reason I subscribed to Musician. Now that Rolling Stone is trying to rewrite its history of bashing crucial hard rock and punk albums, Young's reviews are among the few original ones on the website.

You know, Shania is probably heavier than we think. Isn't she still married to Mutt Lange (producer of AC/DC)?

Even then, Shania Twain isn't a country artist.

At our house, they are on heavy rotation...

I think it's good "neutral" music for when the parents come to visit...

Just cause shania pain in the ass doesn't play music in debt to doesn't mean she doesn't like it :)

I question her sincerity. If she does love Ramones, wouldn't her music NOT suck so hard? ;)

I also question the sincerity of Ashlee Simpson posing with a vinyl of "Nevermind the Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols." Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

The Ramones are dropping like flies. They die poor while bands like Good Charlet and Blink 182 are millionaires.

R.I.P. Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee.

The Ramones are great. I just recently started to really get into them. I used to not care much for punk, but if you can ignore the Sex Pistols, you'll find some good punk bands. I like some of the Pistols' songs, but they didn't help punk much at all, IMO.

I could listen to the Ramones all day.

"We're a Happy Family" is a great song.

Everyone should check out the X-Ray Spex. Intense punk where they are actually saying something. Hauntingly prophetic too. I also love Poly Styrene's voice. "Oh, bondage up yours!"

The Ramones fucking suck.

they're pretty average...although I'd add that punk rock for the most part is pretty lame, very little musicianship involved whatsoever. but I can make an exception for the Clash, who are alright.
