I live in SF and I have the proverbial sweetest pitbull in the city. I would like to know what other Beastie minded folks think of our Mayor Gavin Newsom's proposal to ban pitbulls (or at least put extreme restrictions on owning one) in the city. I agree that in connection with the 12 year old's fatality that some folks (such as his father) should not be allowed to have these dogs b/c they aren't responsible (he wanted to breed them and sell the puppies), there were many factors that could be considered to have triggered the dogs to attack, but in general, the feeling in the city now is that I get dirty looks in Golden Gate park and that just sucks.

just like the war on drugs, the war on terrorism, the war against underage drinking....it won't work

only those who have good dogs will be punished, the criminals who use the dogs for dog fighting or those who train the dogs to be mean will still do so

he's absolutely correct.

it's sad....cause the dogs aren't to blame....they're just a victim of thier genetics.
but they ARE gentically prone to violent aggression....they were breed for that. that aggression can be channeled or blunted...but it's still there, in the programming.
even if you have the sweetest pitbull on the block....it is hardwired to be aggressive...

my aunt was attacked by one in her front yard 2 months ago....a cop had to come and blow it away in her driveway...
it took 4 or 5 shots...and it still managed to run off and die under a bush.

and the owners made the same claim: "she was the sweetest dog ever...she would never attack anyone....the lady and cop must have over-reacted".

they are ticking time bombs.

But this happened with German Shepards in the 50's and Doberman's in the 70's, I'm hoping the hysteria that's going on with pits in town right now blows over.

People are stupid...Agression and blind violence are two different things... dogs aren't wired to go on killing rampages, or do we have serial killers amongts our kennels. People need to be responsible with them.... simple as that. I'm sure there are more cases of pit's NOT attacking than there are of them attacking..

Not too far North, here in Ontario we have new anti-pitbull legislation in the works (thanks for nothing Dalton). Yes, the responsible owners are punished, the people who have these dogs for the wrong reasons go unpunished, because those wrong reasons are usually illegal as it is. It's not just pit-bulls here either, it's against any "pitbull type dog" (staffordshire terriers, anything mixed with a bull terrier etc.). Fucking bullshit. I don't own a pit or a staff but a number of my boys do, all of them fucking class act dogs.

Responsible dog owners? If such a thing existed the streets wouldn't be laden with dog-crap.

The home owners association would correct that problem.

It's funny to watch people walk their dogs. In one hand the leash and in the other a bag-o-feces.

Where I live, some of the dogs roam free. Of course, we don't have any wild, angry pitbulls to contend with.

And if the curtain-twitchers just happen to be dog-owners themselves?

PETA thinks we should allow all human-bred farm animals to drift away into extinction as well.

Pitbulls are among the most ugliest dogs around, just like those pugs.

Pitbulls are among the most ugliest dogs around, just like those pugs.No ways man. There's a breed of dog that's in fashion here in Paris, it looks like it's been squeezed into a wine bottle arse-backwards - tiny back legs, bigger front legs, huge head with these humungous bulging eyes and a flat nose. I yelp whenever I see one.

What possesses people to own such an ugly animal?
