Hello,

During some pub talk last night it occured to me that although I know the Zappa myth/legend/personality,I really know very little of his actual catalogue...it's huge and of course totally eclectic...I own some Captain Beefheart and I loved me some Dread Zeppelin(until the bastards murdered Tortelvis!)but for Frank himself I'm unwashed for all pratical purpose....rarely am I left with a uninformed musical opinion....anyone KNOW their Zappa? Suggestions for a starting point, signature or comprehensive record?

thanks!

May I humbly suggest "Absolutely Free (http://www.science.uva.nl/~robbert/zappa/albums/Absolutely_Free/)" which has on it my all time favorite Zappa/Mothers composition, "Brown Shoes Don't Make It (http://www.morethings.com/music/zappa/brownshoes.html)" a counter-counter-culture song. Released in April 1967, it still sounds fresh and dangerous today, much more fresh and dangerous than lame ass bands like Green Day (et;al) could ever wish to be. I'm not big into the whole Zappa thing, but this record has a feel of greatness as it is, amazing talent.

A talent of this magnitude would be frightening today. If you like Paul's Boutique you'll enjoy the structure changes on this album.

That's about it from me, most the other stuff has brilliance on it, but for some reason I've always liked this album better than the rest.

If your library has Mothermania (http://www.science.uva.nl/~robbert/zappa/albums/Mothermania/), check it out....close enough ;) ! And a whole lotta extras.

I was never that crazy about Zappa -- he was just too too precious for my tastes -- but We're Only in it For the Money and Apostrophe were both listenable.

among my favourites are sheik yer bouti, one size fits all, over nite sensation, you are what you is and hot rats (with beefheart on willie the pimp (y)).... and bongo fury which is a joint beefheart affair.

i haven't listened to a lot of zappa recently, although last week i played one size fits all on a car journey and still love it the same. (y)

i think my husband owns every zappa record but he's away at the minute.

I have never understood the appeal of Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart. Zappa seemed like an interesting guy, and he apparently helped out a lot of musicians. But the music . . . .
