View Full Version : Song(s) you want played at your funeral

pretty sure I/someone did this thread before back in the day but lets fly at it again shall we??
I once went to the funeral of a friends dad who committed suicide by shooting himself, and it was a highly music orientated funeral
mostly because it was held in a funeral home which made it a little less formal
but it was a non-stop tune-fest, odd for me because Im used to the stoic catholic style funeral masses
most of music was classic rock songs that he liked from the likes of the rolling stones, george thoroughgood and CCR
they played 'miss you' by incubus as well which was quite sad
and "paranoid" by black sabbath which i think was a little odd and creepy given the circumstances surrounding his death EEK:
Finished with my woman ’cause she couldn’t help me with my mind
People think I’m insane because I am browning all the time
All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy
Think I’ll lose my mind if I don’t find something to pacify
Can you help me thought you were my friend
Whoah yeah
I need someone to show me the things in life that I can’t find
I can’t see the things that make true happiness, I must be blind
Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry
Happiness I cannot feel and love to me is so unreal
And so as you hear these words telling you now of my state
I tell you to enjoy life I wish I could but it’s too late
yah when that came on people were kinda all...uhhhhh whaat???
anyways the playlist at my funeral could include
satisfied mind - jeff buckley
in my life - beatles
spirit in the sky - Norman Greenbaum
lean on me - bill withers
I shall not walk alone/she's only happy in the sun - ben harper

First two and a half minutes of Funeral March for Queen Mary (or Elizabeth...not sure) by Henry Purcell. So essentially the A Clockwork Orange main theme.
Man With a Harmonica - Ennio Morricone
Lacrime Di Re - Popol Vuh
Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus

Wow, I don't think I'd be able to sit through the funeral. Rolling Stones, Incubus, Black Sabbath? No thanks.

Irish Tradition usually calls for a festive reception before and after the actual funeral. I'd like that if I died, it would only be fitting.
But to stay on topic:
Shootin Star - Bad Company
Ain't no sunshine - Bill Withers
Trenchtown Rock - Bob Marley
4 & 20 - CSNY
Suite Judy Blue Eyes - CSNY
Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix
Thank You - Led Zep
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
Purple Rain - Prince
Hell - Squirrel Nut Zippers
Blackbird - The Beatles
Every breath you take - The Police
Moonlight Mile - Rolling Stones
Out of Tears - Rolling Stones
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
Just my Imagination - The Temps
In a little while - U2
All I want is you - U2

The Imperial March
all I can remember right now
Bee Gees - I Started A Joke

Madonna - This Used To Be My Playground.
Then after the funeral, there'll be a shindig amoungst my family and the first song to honour me is ELO's 'Mr.Blue Sky' to get them a jiggin'. I'd like a mini D.I.S.C.O.

Dust in the wind by Kansas is really THE funeral song:
I close my eyes
only for a moment
and the moments gone
all my dreams
pass before my eyes a curiosity
dust in the wind
all we are dust in the wind
Some old song
just a drop of water
in the endless sea
all we do
crumbles to the ground
though we refuse to see
dust in the wind
Now, don´t hang on
nothing lasts forever
but the earth and sky
it slips away
And all my money
won`t another minute buy
Dust in the wind
all we are dust in the wind
dust in the wind
dust in the wind

I really like 'Candle In The Wind' by Elton John but it's too commonly used to make it special. Kind of loses its poignancy. Same with 'Angels' by Robbie Williams.

I've always wanted a "New Orleans" style funeral. Mourning on the way to the cemetary, but celebrating the life on the way back.
I want people to feel happy that I was alive/were friends with me. Well, at least I hope that they felt happy to know me.

As far as pixes songs go i woulda thought "Monkey gone to heaven" would have been the obvious choice :D
I've never thought about this before so the first five songs itunes selects at random will be my funeral songs:
Queen - Save me
INXS - The Swing
Dogs Die in hot cars - Godhopping
Powderfinger - JC
(okay this is getting a little creepy  )
AC/DC - Problem child
Okay I'm a little scared now, I mean even the swing goes along with the theme if you listen to the lyrics:
The swing into never-neverland
There was a darkness like an old friend
That scratched and crawled up the wall
Into my life
Into my destiny
Into my desire

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then
Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then
I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

How about this one............Don't Fear the Reaper, Blue Oyster Cult!
All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
We can be like they are
Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby I'm your man...
Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...
Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday... Like Romeo and
Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday... Redefine
happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday...We can be like
they are
Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby I'm your man...
Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
The door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared
Saying don't be afraid
Come on baby... And we had no fear
And we ran to him... Then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodbye
We had become like they are
We had taken his hand
We had become like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
That will get `em smiling or at least thinking a bit. (y)

i would love to be at some of ur funerals just to see reactions(sorry if that seems kinda jackassish)
ok first would be
Cadence to Arms: Dropkick Murphys (because like someone said earlier Bagpipes are always a nice touch at funerals.)
Muppet N.A.M.B.L.A. : Leftover Crack featuring the Distillers(if u look at the lyrics it sums it up pretty good, and itd piss off my anyone who was there)
and lastly
THanks That Was Fun: Barenaked Ladies
I'm learning, I'm yearning
I'm burning, all your stuff
But that's not enough.
I'm faking, that I'm aching
Mistaking lust for love.
Thanks, that was fun
Don't forget, no regrets
Except maybe one.
Did I scare you?
When I dared you?
I stared you in the eye
And told you goodbye.
You mock me,
It shocked me,
When you walked me to the bus.
Thanks, that was fun
Don't forget, no regrets
Except maybe one.
Made a deal not to feel
God, that's dumb
Everybody knows the deal fell through.
I was hoping I could just blame you.
When was it that I became so soft?
This sentimentality doesn't look good on me.
I thought that you would be begging to be with me.
I'm the one on my knees blubbering please let me stay.
Deflated, and jaded.
I hated when you called which isn't at all.
I've spoken, though broken.
Here's a token of my love.
Thanks, that was fun
Don't forget, no regrets
Except maybe one.
Made a deal not to feel
God, that was dumb
Don't forget, no regrets
Except maybe one.
Made a deal not to feel
Thanks, that was fun

- Root Down. Dont care what anyone thinks of me. I'm 27 years old, 2 kids, great career, but the Bboys have and always will be a part of my life and who I am. My favorite piece of music, ever.
- Something by Bob Marley. Too hard to decide right now. Maybe Redemption Song. It's moving.
- Boss DJ - Sublime
It's not really themed with "death" or anything but I love it and the first line is, "there's a steel train, coming through. I would take it if I could."
- "Blowin in the Wind" Dylan
- "Stem" by Hayden because of it's sheer beauty and simplicity.
- "Do you Realize?" by the Flaming Lips. In case a few people hadn't cried yet :D (y) .
- The ceremony would end as people were leaving, "Like A Rolling Stone" by Dylan would play because know matter what I'm doing, whenever I hear it, that song just does something to me. It makes me feel good.
- After that, my family and closest friends would be the last few around and "Time for Livin" by the boys would play, just for them.

When my best friend's oldest son killed himself five years ago we played loads of his fave songs at the funeral.
The main track was Lust for life by Iggy Pop. He'd been playing that single non-stop for months (and someone even threw a copy of Trainspotting in the grave). Also Simon and Garfunkel's Sounds of silence and Bridge over troubled water will never sound the same to me again....
for me....
I can only think of David Bowie's Heroes.
and maybe Foo Fighters There goes my hero... (happens to be playing in the background right now). I really haven't given it much thought. I know that I want to be freeze-dried, because it doesn't destroy the ozone layer like cremation, and I can be used as fertilizer for the silverpear tree that will be planted for me. (I haven't made any will so you gotta tell my sister when she comes here tell about my demise...).

How about VooDoo by Godsmack?
I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins.
Never did I wanna be here again
And I don't remember why I came.
Candles raise my desire,
Why I'm so far away.
No more meaning to my life,
No more reason to stay
Freazing, feeling,
Breathe in, breathe in
Im coming back again...
[repeat chorus]
Hazing clouds rain on my head,
Empty thoughts fill my ears.
Find my shade by the moonlight,
Why my thoughts arent so clear.
Demons dreaming,
Breathe in, breathe in...
Im coming back again...
[repeat chorus 4 times]
Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo.
[repeat]
[so far away...
Im not the one whos so far away...
Im not the one whos so far away...
Im not the one whos so far away...]
Breathe in, breathe in

If I have my way: no funeral, no anything. Just burn me and put me in baggies maybe and give me to my friends and that's it. No songs or commemorations or memorial or plot or grave or flowers or organ music. All of that stuff after a life is over, to me, is kind of beside the point. That said, though, I've told my son that if he wants to do something that'll make him feel better about it all, then he should. He knows how I feel. We just talked about this in fact.

"Get What You Give" by the New Radicals would most def be played at my funeral, because it's my favorite song of all-time.
There'd be some Beastie Boys and Quarashi songs for sure, since everyone who knows me knows how much I love those two groups. I don't know what songs though.
"Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve would be played too.

if someone wanted to have something for me, i guess i'd say
french kicks - the trial of the century
bjork - all is full of love (the album version)
maybe the kings of leon's "where nobody knows" only because they say my name all soulful-like
new order - regret

Always look on the bright side of life- Monty Python
I'm surprised nobody of you mentioned that...
Oh, and "Do you realize"- Flaming Lips is a great choice, that has to be played.
I once heard that thinking of your own funeral is the deepest neurosis one can have... hm... does that scare anybody in here?;)

I would like a 24 gun salute and to be cast into the ocean at sunset. And I want Sprach Zarathustra or whatever the song from the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey is called to be playing at that moment. And then I want 100 white doves to be released to the sounds of the Ginuwine's cover of When Doves Cry. And I want a parade.

i don't think it's a good idea to have doves and guns at the same time. wouldn't send the right message. especially i've you're playing when doves cry.

How about if the doves are released first and then shot down from the sky and fall into the ocean too?
It kinda drives the whole "Look man, he's dead! Let go!" thing home for my loved ones.
