The Doors were not a great band. Never, ever. (btw, they're part of my mantra re the general suckiness of California bands.) If Morrison hadn't of pulled his pants down on stage and then died in Paris, no one would care about the Doors today. They'ld be the Moody Blues or something.

Their music really aged badly and sounds unbelievably lame today. Morrison's idea of poetry is a joke. And how bad was the Oliver Stone movie? Who can think Morrison's a genius?

My brother listened to the Doors nearly non-stop when I was little.
I didn't like them just because I heard so much of them via him.

But after I saw The Doors movie, I had more of a hunger for that music and while I can't say that I love it, I do some of it a lot. I have to be in the right frame of mind for it and it does help to see JM in your head when the songs are playing.

anyways, the Doors were one of the most important American bands of the psychedelic era..alongside other notable groundbreaking groups such as the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. like their contemporaries, the Doors were not a one dimensional band, limiting themselves to one specific sound...who incorporated the blues, folk, classical, east Indian and swing/big band into their material, with menacing yet enticing melodies. they brought a gloomy and almost threatening edge to the psychedelia movement. upon the recording of their highly acclaimed and classic debut lp, the band was in top form, bristling with optimism and great vigor. I can't emphasize that enough because a majority of the tracks on their debut were recorded in a single take, which is quite the accomplishment. the accompanying 'Break on Through' promo film was also arguably an important contribution in the development of music videos. over the years, the Soft Parade has been criticized and panned a lot, but they rebounded with LA Woman...the straight up, stripped-down, blues influenced album which showcased some of their finest material to date. Jim Morrison, in terms as a frontman, had the swaggering and alluring stage presence and was very charismatic...although I gotta admit his poetry is really meh, his more conventional lyrics were socially and politically charged, which were enhanced by his deep and powerful vocals. Ray Manzarek was an extremely rare talent, an almost dominating presence who played the bass keyboard with his left hand, organ with his right and often provided backing vocals at the same time...John Densmore has sometimes been compared to Charlie Watts, for his consistent and very jazzy, yet straight-forward drumming style..and Robby Krieger was a terrific guitarist, heavily influenced by the blues, flamenco and classical guitar styles. they're not one of my favourite groups or a band I listen to often, but the Doors should be recognized as the one of the more influential and important bands of the psychedelic era...denying their contributions and work is pretty ignorant and foolish.
