View Full Version : Favorite Hip Hop Producer Poll

I think in light of that intriguing "best rap producer right now" thread, we should rack up the statistics. But just for the sake of numbers, we'll make the poll topic "Your Favorite Producer", rather than who's the hottest right now. Go nuts, sorry if I forgot anyone obvious.........

Gotta go with Nu-Mark & Cut Chemist...between all the shit they've done for J5 which has been timeless, to Nu-Mark's Blend Crafters with Pomo, to Cut Chemist's Brainfreeze & Product Placement with DJ Shadow, and even the Litmus Test, it's all amazing stuff. Chief Xcel gets my runner-up nod, but I'm not one to lean towards mainstream rap, although I don't discount their skills simply because they are mainstream. I think Hi-Tek is one notable producer that should be on that list.

yeah man i would say Shadow should be added to the list but I honestly think the production he's done for other artists hasn't been nearly as good as his own, sans-rap work. idk if that would eliminate him from the running.

Dre shouldn't win it. His shit is too hit and miss, if it weren't for a career of working with great M.C's, i doubt he'd have such a following. Remember the time between 94-99?

I'd say Premo, or personally, Prince Paul, only because I own shit loads of his work and I like most of it. 'Prince Among Thieves' was noice.....

I like the RZA. He did an excellent job on the Kill Bill soundtrack.

I still think Necro deserves a mention.

He is underated.

For the amount of tracks that he produces, the quality is crazy.

But Dan Nakamura takes it by a mile.

Best producer ever.

Relax. Why don't you cry about it, I hear that helps.

And on the Rick Rubin tip, my original reasoning for not including him was that he's not a primarily hip-hop producer. By this point he's done more rock records than rap; plus he no longer does hip-hop in general, despite the 99 Problems remix which, although dope, hardly signifies a return to a fully-functioning hip-hop focus. But now that I look at it, I see that he should have been on there. My bad.

I do regret omitting DJ Premier too for those of you who pointed that out to me, and I apologize. I knew that I would end up forgetting someone.

And lastly, for those of you whining like little girls, chill out; it's just a poll.

I can't believe P Diddy didn't make the cut?

:D

You make a good point. Whoops. Although I doubt he'd get many votes, he's still an extremely important producer. I'm now realizing a lot of mistakes I made making this poll, but whatever, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

He's done quite a bit with the Def Jux cats and others.

I have an entire mixtape entitled "RJD2 is God" (A bootleg I believe) of his rap tracks, and they're pretty good.

Yeah, I categorize DJ Shadow as a DJ more than a producer. RJD2 was kind of a close call too.

premier, havoc, the alchemist, large professor, hi-tek, 9th wonder.

and now I see, none of those are options in the poll!!!!!

wait, out of those options, I was the only one to vote for the neptunes? that can't be man. the neptunes are on a level by themselves. the ones I mentioned are personal favorites, but the neptunes are more talented than any of those i mentioned, or any of the other options. you don't have to agree, but i just can't believe i was THE ONLY ONE who voted for them. sure not everything of theirs is good, but they have a way of coming up with new shit again and again and again, while also having a signature sound. but every new record sounds different than the last one. they're amazing.

They're overated.

I've never been truly impressed with their beats. They're definitely 'poppy' and dancable, but their not really that good.

I've yet to see what the hype is.

For example, I'm listening to Operation: Doomsday right now, and the production is just insane.

Better than anything the Neptunes have ever done.

TIMBO!

He completely changed the game. Almost everyone was biting his shit as soon as he'd make a new track. I don't think popular hip hop would be where it is without him. So therefore I would consider him my favorite producer.

Primo

And i would class Shadow/RjD2 as "hip-hop" producers, as they produce hip-hop, its just instrumental hip-hop.
