On March 16th, Canadian company Nortel announced its participation in the very controversial railway project between Gormo, in Eastern Tibet and the Tibetan capital, Lhasa. The 1,142 km railway will connect Central Tibet to continental China for the first time, directly threatening Tibetan culture and identity. Nortel is to provide a digital wireless communications network, joining Canada’a Bombardier and Power Corporation who are building railcars for the line.
As reported in various Montreal newspapers this last week, the Canada Tibet Committee and other Tibet support groups have defended the interests of the Tibetan people in this project. We have asked Bombardier to pull out from this project and we will ask the same from Nortel. From ethical, social and environmental standpoints, their involvement in this project is a danger for Tibet. If you or someone you know has Nortel shares and wish to help directly or indirectly in our campaign, please safely keep the proxy form you received in the mail from Nortel and get in contact with the Canada Tibet Committee office at ctcoffice@tibet.ca or at 514-487-0665 as soon as possible.
