WASHINGTON -
President Bush said Saturday that pulling out of
Iraq now is not an option, rejecting calls by some lawmakers and many people asked in polls to start bringing U.S. troops home.

"The terrorists and insurgents are trying to get us to retreat. Their goal is to get us to leave before Iraqis have had a chance to show the region what a government that is elected and truly accountable to its citizens can do for its people," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

"We will settle for nothing less than victory" over terrorists there, he said later.

----
How completely ironic is what I highlighted in bold type? Most of the country and quite a few members of Congress now want OUT of Iraq. His approval rating is abysmal, his plans for social security and complete exit plan from Iraq failures are looming over his head yet he says this?

Sounds to me like he is sending a message to all opponents of his policies, including American citizens, that we can just "fuck off" so to speak.

We need to step up the pressure created from the Downing Street memos. At the very least what it will do will be for this administration to start showing it's true nature. It's already started. "truly accountable to it's citizens" indeed.

I'm really scared for my friend. He leaves tomorrow morning, and he was talking about the war when I went to go visit him yesterday. He said the insurgents are going into Iraqi homes and kidnapping children and telling the parents if they ever want to see the kids again, they must go kill an American soldier. So no one knows who the enemy is over there...hmm, Vietnam anyone?

The insurgents are also having snipers from Iran and Syria come and take out soldiers.

On the upside, my friend found out his baby's going to be a girl. Too bad he won't see her till she's talking.

No offence queenadrock but that might just be propaganda.

We'll never find out what really goes on there...

Not saying your friend is lying but that he might be lied to.

I'm not saying it can't possibly be true, I'm saying that it might not be.

It's all well and good to lambast Bush for not listening to the people who want their friends and loved ones back, but the fact is that those troops are going to have to stay for a long time yet - unless you'd rather see Iraq turn into another Afghanistan. The Bushies have America sunk into a quagmire that will take time to reverse, whether Americans like it or not. The alternative would be much, much worse.

mighty convenient, eh? (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/dayart/20050616/cartoon20050616.gif) Who are the victims of these decisions? And who will be the victorious?

I hope for his sake he is being lied to...though I don't know why they'd tell something like that to someone who's being sent there.

And How did Afghanistan turn into the Taliban?

As I recall, the unstable condition in which Afghanistan was left following its CIA-sponsored victory over the Soviets provided a golden opportunity for foreign-sponsored religious fundamentalists to assume power and transform the state into a twisted, repressive theocracy. I already know my history, cuz. And it's in danger of repeating itself if the proper preventative steps aren't taken.

Today, of course, we have Vietnam II, the BBC is in tatters, Deep Throat turns out to be a mad-eyed geezer with a book deal and Ellsberg is still appealing for whistleblowers when no one will print their revelations unless they involve pierced labia, or Castro having sex with a dog. While all other public figures cannot appear in any format without being at least partially naked, sexually reassigned and/or masturbating a farm animal, our politicians are cocooned by embedded sycophancy. Not that I'd want to see Blair stripped with his parts in a jar and laying hands on a helpless donkey, but equally I am very tired of bombshells such as the Downing Street memo bringing us no nearer a transatlantic war crimes tribunal.
This is what I love about you brits. Journalism at it's finest and truest.
