My friend at work who loves the OC and all of those WB types of shows, LOVES coldplay. That makes me wonder...
I liked Clocks. And I've listened to the latest album...it did nothing for me. I don't particularly like watching Chris Martin perform.

yeah on the cd it should read:
"coldplay X&Y"
"caution: sharp corners...blah, blah, blah...for ages 6 and up."
but i know what you are sayin tzar.
my mom was telling me on the phone of how much she enjoys listening to coldplay. so i hung up on her
and dialed my mom's number...
to my dismay i DIDNT call the wrong number in the first place.
ah well, now just think of the x-tra bonding time you now get with you mom cuz you both listen to mr. martin and the gang! oh hot damn and thank ya ma'am!

i still think the first two albums are pretty good.
the scientist is a nice song.
anyway, i think old folks like it because it's sort of mellow, just like r.e.m.
it won't cause any heartattacks or something.

I think it's music that seems to fit all the demographics.
It can be enjoyed by the aformentioned 40 year old women, the college dudes, the teenage girls... any little sub-group audience you want to create, Coldplay seems to be cool with any of them. Which obviously explains why they're the biggest band right now.
Even though I got into the band in late 2000 and early 2001 (which I guess was 5 or 6 months after "Parachutes" came out), I feel like an old-school Coldplay fan for some reason.
I actually remember a time when their music was called "Radiohead-esque" (now bands are called "Coldplay-esque") and they weren't particularly well-known (though perhaps by the time it was 6 months later absolutely EVERYONE knew who they were). And I also remember watching a program on MuchMusic and it featured Coldplay performing at a fairly small pub gig. Now those dudes are selling out arenas.
And I remember when Coldplay and Travis were competitors... and now nobody remembers Travis anymore.
Whoa!

i hate coldplay. most of their songs sound the same.
I tried to get into them but they're so boring. Yellow was good but it's all been downhill from there. I get more excited listening to Engineers (http://www.engineersweb.net/). hint hint

I've owned Parachutes for three years and still like it, especially because some of the songs have a haunting/dreamy quality, like the song "High Speed", similar to old Moody Blues stuff.
yeah well my friend plays their new album whilst i'm at his house. the songs aren't bad or shit or anything. they're bare-able; just not my cup of tea.
if mum told me she wanted a slayer album for her bday... now that would scare the shitstains outta my jocks!

Possibly because their label--EMI--was staking so much money on this one album from one of their supergroups, to keep their shareholders happy they made very sure it was a "safe" piece of music i.e. an album that would appeal to many people and offend few of them. Kind of like vanilla: it's pleasant.....and that's about it (I haven't heard this album so am just going by all the various reveiws of it).
Because bands that are ADORED by their fans almost always don't sell in large numbers--that's a big no no for the label's accounting department.

"X&Y" is great, but I don't think they can top "A Rush Of Blood To The Head."
And "Parachutes" is a very special record for me. :)

Yeah, he doesn't think so I think. He always looks left and right to see if anyone heard it before he made the switch.
I do the same thing when he puts in coldplay.
"Quick, is anyone witnessing that my kid effin likes this shit."
But it's okay because his best friend wants to borrow my PE so I have an in.

I saw an interview with chris martin, he said that no one will call them a great lyrical band 20,30 years from now, but maybe they will talk about their cords. all their cords sound the same to me  I think he is confused

I don't know how Coldplay have got so big, so fast. I have nothing against them, but we're awash with similarily talented/sounding bands in the UK but for some reason Martin et al. have struck the big time. I remember seeing them live, bottom of the bill on the NME tour a few years back. There was only about 15 people there and I'd have laughed out loud if you'd have suggested they'd ever be headlining Glastonbury.
i hate coldplay. most of their songs sound the same.
Funny. That's what my wife says about the beasties.
I do like some Coldplay songs but their music is certainly going nowhere.

Do those other bands have one of the largest music companies on the planet promoting them? Don't underestimate the power of advertising.
Do the other bands have a lead singer that is regularly described using the word "beautiful"? (I'm just making an observation--I'm not gay).
Do the other bands' lead singers have a wife like Chris Martins'?
And the saying "At the right place and the right time" I'm sure also has something to do with their popularity.

To the people who mentioned REM: I have disliked them for a long time. But they helped make the 80s bareable.

True. Although in the UK Martin is regarded as a bit of an oddity; like a public school boy whose had too much sugar.

The reason Coldplay is the most popular of the other similar-ish Britpop bands (all of which I have a weakness for!) is that they are easily the most charismatic. Oh yeah, and they do the sensitive, doe-eyed thing better than anyone else.
Seriously, Chris Martin is the kind of guy you hope your daughter brings home. The guys in Keane need to join a weight loss program. ;)

I thought that was most of their audience. At least I thought that, but I guess I was wrong. I really don't know anyone who listens to coldplay.

That helped a lot.
Many British bands have problems to become succesful in the U.S. And from what I remember everybody went crazy about Coldplay around the same time that Chris started dating you know who.

If my daughter brought home Chris Martin, I'd banish her outside the city gates for bringing home a gopher-faced, photographer-beating bed-wetting pile of phlegm.

I'm 40+ and never really cared about Coldplay.
At first they were too much of a Radiohead wanna-be's and being a big Radiohead fan that was a huge turn-off. When they're videos were played on MTV I did singalong, cause they were so catchy and easy, but that didn't make me wanna go to their earlier gigs here, even tho Turin Brakes were supporting (twice), and I really liked them. Actually Chris supporting good causes is the only reason I like them and maybe if somebody dragged me along to their gigs (they'd have to pay me tho') I'd might enjoy the live experience.
