i bought this corset looking thingie top. i put it on with black pants, heels...

it looks nice. kinda showy, kinda sexy, kinda sophisticated, nice overall. but it shows a little belly, a little hip. im relatively shy about showing belly and hip outside of the bathing suit arena. by relatively, i mean that i almost never show midsection if i can help it.
it's not all spilling out of anything. and it's not gross and shit. it's just... my belly. i dont know what to do. my belly is relatively flat, but right now, it's not hard. i kinda slack off on the abs when im not in season. so it's just soft.

grrrrrrr i just wanna snap my fingers and make myself look decent.

i can't understand how extreme exercise can be fun, (unless you have an eating disorder or something) i think it is completely unecessary - just go for a walk every day or ride your bike to work or something.

There's something in the thrill of marathons and in exercise, sweating in general.
I like to walk and do tamer things, but I like to go at it hard as well.
I don't have an eating disorder. I just exercise a lot.
I know it's not for everyone...
There are people who MOAN every morning going into the gym.
"Oh god, I don't want to be here." "This is so hard." "I hate this."
But I love it--I see it as a chance to help myself physically and that helps me to achieve other goals in life as well.

I've just always enjoyed it and hopefully will always be able to.

By extreme, do you mean running or biking? Extreme to me is an Ultra ironman 2.4 mile swim 112 bike, and 26.2 mile run. Or a TRIPLE Ultra ironman- the above times 3.
I do love to challenge my body, but not push it to endless limits.

running and biking are not extreme - they're fine as long as you can incorporate them into your everyday life, y'know.
paying gym memberships and going to the gym everyday i think is extreme, because it's not just about pushing your body to its limits, it's about vanity.

Not necessarily, but mostly, yeah.
Some people need to exercise every day or they wont keep it up. They sometimes do it for health reasons- ie. high cholesterol.
Those guys that are in there every day lifting for 2 plus hours? Vanity, yes. Gross.
I prefer to get OUTSIDE in the summer time- get some fresh air.

you don't have to go to the gym every day to be healthy!
eating right and regular exercise (walking, bike riding) is what makes a person healthy.

I guess most people are not as healthy as they think they are. Besides I'm more about being in shape than just not fat. And yeah if that means I get to have pose downs with myself in the mirror then yeah good for me!

I agree that you don't have to do it every day. But you have to do it more than you used to as you get old. Just a fact.

The newest guidelines here are that you should get 60-90 minutes of hard aerobics 5ish times a week.

I can't just walk and get my heartrate up...I'd have to run to get there, bike really hard/long, or use equipment at the gym.

I feel the exact same way.

I have a friend at work who does these running races where you get to the start line at something like 6am on a Saturday morning and you run as much or as little as you want until something like 6pm the next night (Sunday).

He says that there are some people who run nearly non-stop. They stop for some meals and they only take very light naps. They run a LOT. Like hundreds of miles in those 36 hours.

I think he runs for something like 6 hours at 8mph on each day.
So he winds up doing something like 100 miles in the two days.

I'd do maybe a half day with him tops (although I don't do a 7-minute mile).
I wouldn't do that whole weekend thing, but for them, it's great and it revives them.
It just makes my knees feel like hurting. :) I think a marathon is about all I want to push myself to do. That and just my normal daily routines.

Zorra, I gotta disagree with you. It's not about vanity (at least for me it's not). Far from it.

It's about health and doing what I can do to maintain it and have that fit into my schedule.

As I've gotten older, I've gotten more demands on my time and it's just not a matter of going outside when I want to to get the exercise I need. I have a job, a house, a kid, school work..all of that competes with my time and I've got to find ways to make it all work. The gym is my solution to that.

PLUS, where I live, the weather fluctuates pretty radically every 3 months. If I rely on doing outdoor things, then my routine will get interrupted. If I exercise outside, I will have to change that routine when the season changes. It's just that easy. But every interruption makes it hard to keep to a routine...with every interruption, you run the risk of not resuming or resuming fully.

The gym is there year-round and I don't have to make adjustments and possibly get off the routine just because the temperature drops 100 or rises degrees or because the sidewalks are iced up.

So for me, I go to the gym because of convenience, schedule, and the weather. Not vanity. If you knew me, you'd know that. I do agree, though, that there are beautiful botox people who refuse to age. I'm not a botoxer and I have no problem aging. I just want to do what I can to be in good health.

haha, that is a good point.

I like working out when I get the time. I finally had things calm down round here and am getting back to the gym today, finally.

I think the thing for me is that it makes me feel better. Not so much physically (although it does that too) but it allows me to focus on only what I am doing (clears the mind) then I always feel refreshed after. If I don't go to the gym I get pissy and really, really moody.

I notice that about me too.

I don't think there's a doubt that exercise helps to clear the mind and gives you more energy.

I do think people are saying that you can get those same benefits from non-gym things like walking or riding a bike. Maybe some can, but not everyone.

For me, walking doesn't elevate my heartrate enough and I can't bike effectively and consistently here year-round. It's either too dangerous because of a lack of good bike lanes/trails, because of cars, or the cold/ice/snow. There's running outdoors, which I do as much as I can, but you just can't keep that up easily through icy winters. Bottom line is that if the gym works for you, go for it. I don't think it means that you're a vain person if you use a gym and use it frequently.

beastieangel01

exactly. For some people that may be true but it doesn't mean everyone can be lumped in that category.

I only think it's lame if the person goes and that is there only interest in life. I suppose for some people, that's their thing, okay I guess (although I don't understand it). But I mean, read a book or something. Have some other hobby as well, exercise the body and mind, dangit.

Loppfessor

hahaha YES. I've been to the gym sometimes with some make-up on, but that was because I was at work all day before hand then went straight to the gym.

The ones that I see at 8am strolling in with full blown almost night club make-up cracks me up. Also, I don't know how any women can work out with their hair DOWN (especially when it's long, I understand if it cannot be pulled up). I mean, when I go to work out I SWEAT. I don't want my hair all nasty and matted to my neck and back. Ick. I always put it up out of the way.

My hair is nearly to the middle of my back. I tend to exercise with it down to start with because it helps to keep me a little warmer. (My gym is COLD in the morning!) But as I get into things, I pull it up more.

We get women who come in in full-on hair & makeup. This one woman comes in dressed in a full-length fur coat. She runs for an hour, doesn't shower, and then puts that coat on again. Ewwwww.

Hahahaha!!! (y) I know exactly what you mean. When I used to go to the gym I saw little 16yr old chickies with a trowel face... just plastered on with their hair down!! It shat me off badly. If I go to exercise the most I'll do is put on a tad of eye liner, but that's because I feel insecure without it on... and since I have long hair I tie it up. The gym is not a catwalk or a place to pick up - simple. My one friend belongs to a Bally's and that place, man, is definitely serving two purposes: it's there for exercise and it's without a doubt a singles meet up kind of place. A lot of the women there: full-on hair & makeup and these coordinated outfits (matching jacket, shorts, exercise bra, top) that have got to cost at least $150/per. The way a lot of the women there act and interact says to me that they're on the hunt for a guy. And the gym itself sponsors these singles socials...it's not an appealing thing for me but my friend LOVES it. Blech.

My gym: filled with people of all ages and depending on the time of the day when I'm there, I'll see a lot of people who are there to exercise. There are always complainers (people who hate being there), people who go just to talk/socialize, and beauty queens. But the ratio of those people:serious exercisers is much more acceptable at my gym than it is at a place like that Ballys ^^^. Yikes.

Oh my... I'm speechless, what's the point in calling it a GYM?! They might as well not even have the equipment there. The bimbo's probably wouldn't even notice the equipment missing.

Enree, my boyfriend has a baby boy and I have gotten super involved with him. Sometimes I look at him and think, some day he'll be a man. I wonder what kind of man he'll be. He's not even mine and I can't imagine him being in the military. Having boys is such a complicated thing these days.

I can only imagine what you're going through and I wish the best for you and your son.

I have gotten myself to be able to support his decision, but it hurts me deeply inside. Hard thing to assimilate. It's absolutely counterintuitive to support a thing that you know is putting your kid right into danger. I haven't found my ambivalence switch yet.

I have some time-tested friends who sort of keep an eye on me, keep me busy or try to. I think they think that if I have time to think about this, I'll plot to break him out of Ft. Benning or maybe bodily prevent him from being deployed to Iraq. Those friends have meant a lot to me, especially in the last month when north on my sort of personal compass was set to 17 April. Like someone asked me what the date was and I thought, "It's been two days since he's been gone so it must be the 19th." And for the last month, I have been way, way on edge. Like hugely so. I am grateful to the people who have withstood me the middle of this strange insanity. :o
