Oscilloscope is a recording studio, production company, post-production company, movie company, record company,
design stuff spot, laboratory, paintball guns, night vision goggles, seriously whatever it takes… basically we make shit.
Recent projects include:
The Beastie Boys “To The 5 Boroughs” album, which was recorded and mixed in the Oscilloscope recording studio.
And the package design for that record was laid out here… yes, I said “package”.
Oscilloscope has also produced videos for songs from the “To The 5 Boroughs” album including “Ch-Check It Out”, “
Right Right Now Now”, “An Open Letter To NYC”, “Triple Trouble”, “Rhyme The Rhyme Well”, “All lifestyles”, “Shazam”...………
We’re currently putting together a film of a show that Beastie Boys played at Madison Square Garden on October 9th 2004.
This project has so much traction that it has a frickin’ “green light” for theatrical release. Within Oscilloscope’s facilities
we are doing all of the off-line and on-line editing, sound editing and mixing. We’re also doing all of the authoring for the DVD…
Basically all the pre-pro, and the post production is getting done on sight. I’m telling you, The Scope is putting shit together.
Fools are walking around in lab coats over here. And that’s for real.
Everyday during recess our employees enjoy a relaxing game of Goiter Ball. Rules: Goiter Ball should be played by 4 to 8 players.
It is similar to hockey in that there are two goals. But the ball that is used is like a big ass bouncy exercise ball that is hit around
with broom sticks or cardboard tubes. You can only move or touch the ball if you have both feet on a skateboard.
At all times there must be at least one raibid spazzing dog or albino wart hog to try to bite the players and or pop the ball.
If any player has a real goiter on his or her neck, anyone who hits it gets bonus points.
In November of 2002 a new Bad Brains record was recorded at Oscilloscope and is currently in the process of being mixed here.
So that should be coming out soon.
…And Le Tigre did some mixing at the O-scope studio as well.
For real, shit is blowing up over here. Today Michael (emplyee of the month) looked out the window and he thought this guy
was trying to steal his scooter, so he started yelling at him from the window. And the guy didn’t move away from it so he went
downstairs and started yelling at the guy even more. It was really hectic. They were threatening each other, but then the guy
went away so Michael was happy. Later Michael calmed down and told us a story about how he almost got into a fight with
another guy a long time ago, but then his friend said that maybe that guy he was going to fight had AIDS...
so Michael didn’t want to fight him anymore.

I am very confused. Is Oscilloscope a real company and studio owned by the bboys, or simply just a temporary studio that the beastie's have been using for TT5B related productions? Is is safe to say that Yauch created this page himself? What the hell is going on? Has anyone tried to order one of those shirts, cause they're pretty fly? I want.......need some answers!

pretty much after the Dungeon, they started working out of Oscilloscope studios.
now its a pre/post production house and everything is done on-site...
so it looks like Adam Yauch is in charge here, i can't fucking wait for the DVD, now that I know they are completely in charge of the release...
it says more warez are coming, i bet this site will get a few updates in the near future...

So the Beasties have set up multiple studios, i.e. G-Son, Son of the G, the Dungeon (this was the HN one with the space station-esque theme in the liner notes of HN, right?), and now Oscilloscope. How come they don't just set up a permanent facility for making music? I'm sure it would be a lot more convenient and cheaper at that.

Nathanial Hornblower was born on a farm in Appenzell Switzerland in 1948. A strange child, he refused to go to school. Instead he would spend his time alone in the barn with the cows and goats. Having no friends and little contact with his own family he usually only spoke to the animals, and to them only in a series of grunts and snorts. He had no interest in normal clothing and fashioned his own styles from old shed dog hair and cat dander. Many thought that he might be slightly retarded, but then through a series of accidents and mishaps he came into his own.
His life really began to take shape at age 10 when he took his fathers 8mm camera and created his first short film. He called it “My Drunken Toenail.” When he told his family about his idea for his film they thought it absurd, but it was the dawning of the era of the French new wave, and abstract and absurdist filmmaking was just on the eve of exploding. Nathanial’s mother sent his short to the Film Academy in Geneva thinking that they were a lab that would develop the film and send it back. But in a bazaar series of misunderstandings, they took “My Drunken Toenail” as an application for admission and young Hornblower was accepted. On the basis of one abstract, out of focus short film, he was erroneously admitted, and became the youngest student to ever attend the Academy. The press picked up on it and had a field day.
With all the attention and unlimited access to film making equipment, he went balls out in an attempt to revolutionize the very concept of filmmaking. He would scream at the reels of film saying that his emotions would be transferred into the film. He would pee on the film and dance around the projector while it was showing his movies.
Needless to say, things didn’t really pan out. His films met with mediocre reviews, and in general his peers thought him a bit much. He made wild claims often telling fellow students things like “you are all biting my style” and “don’t be a hater” or even “I am the winner!!”
Over time his fellow students began to distance themselves from him and he blossomed into a full-blown weirdo.

And apparently, Losel had a birthday party. Happy birthday, sweetie.
I have a stack of kid art in a closet in my bedroom.
They started out looking like what's on this site: Little crayon stories.
Then he did portraits--usually of me or people walking by.
As he got older, he wanted to play Xs & Os or dots & squares on paper.
For a long bunch of years, he switched from games or graphics to words and the drawings became ranked lists--lists of favorite books, songs, artists; states; politicians. But always with doodles of hearts and kid initials and spaceships as borders.
Then he reverted. I guess we all do. He did portraits again.
Always with charcoal and never on restaurant placesettings or plain scraps of paper but in a sketchpad and done with an artist's flair. Darker, black and inky, more self-conscious. Different to him but to me, they were crayon art evolved. There's one of me that's eerily good. They went into the stack too.
If you look through that stack, you can watch him grow up.
I haven't seen a crayon in years. Mostly, it's the same for the charcoal.
Now when we get together, he wants to talk about deep shit like the merits of and misgivings of communism. I miss the crayons.

Perfectamundo. It's ahead of it's time. I'd really have to see it from the back though. I mean, I could see trouble arising. But besides that, the comfort level looks unbeatable. The material looks versatile like one size fits all, from little people to the Hulk. A faster swim suit to be sure. Bright and scarry enough that sharks will be on the skimmy, and one snap of those straps will bring all the fly ladies, or whomever. My whole swim team will finally win and be the talk of the town. Pricey, but we have stuff to trade too, ie... inflatable dog flippers (scratch resistant for cats), homemade sun tan lotion (I think it works), a latin dictionary... People don't seem to understand me anymore until it's too late. But I can make due until it comes out.

I wonder what oscilloscope is doing with boilers though.
That photo was really a blast from the past. My dad used to sell that old school brand and he had catalogs featuring 50s era engineers working alongside the boilers. That could have been a catalog shot if only it was in b/w. :)

If anyone can't get Oscilloscope's site applets to work, you might have to update your Java "virtual machine" plug-in.
Java.com (http://java.com/en/)
The only reason I know this is not because I'm good with computers but because yesterday I was on an interactive astronomy site (http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/skychart/article_1220_1.asp) and their (really cool!) constellation finder gizmo wouldn't work for me anymore. You would have loved THIS site before the album dropped. First, it disappeared, then came back with just a really old pencil sketch of the NYC skyline, the over time it was updated to the current skyline. There was no messageboard for a while...but we could click around and find "secret" spots to listen to snippets of tracks from TT5B.

These are the questions... you may/might find yourself asking yourself.
What are the Beasties (is Yauch) communicating in the seemingly random pictures with or without thinking... besides a flare for a seemingly bizzare and fun passtime.. taking away the edge in order to... sharpen it?
Can it (the site) be paralleled somehow to an induced abstract relaxation so the eyes can be more attentive to see the blur better? Whatever that means.
Is Yauch currently studiously engaged in tuning... his bass (philosophical grounding) fundamentals of an instrumental so to speak at this very point in time, and if so...?
Are the sitting stack of cd's referencing Live 8 bands...?
Is he also analyzing (renegotiating the nature of...) his pipelines and if so...?
Yeti, Sasquatch's closest relative in the east of whom Yauch shines light on while his miniature engages... in a freezer. What does this mean?
Where in the world is this all leading? Better yet, coming from?
Is it a lack of communication in this lifetime due/ attributed to so many being indifferent to the very moral difference in no uncertain terms... making the world suffer in the ways that it is?
When you're the Beastie's and have a macro realization... things figured out and consumated (to date) with the best that the human mind has ever culminated... in any and every respect and capacity just about (always standing to reason...), and in ways most seem so obtuse and unfamiliar to (for lack of circumstance or wherewithal...), where can/ do you go as a whole when it comes down to it...
Do you want to have a discussion about Donnie Darko?
Did he consciously give his life?
Are the constellations of a lifetime better realized/ innately apparent to a certain kind or form of genetics...?
Ok. I mean, how does it all fit and in what terms?
What's the next step for someone (who has been) pronounced in the state of the art, but in a position of no wherewithal for things seemingly beyond one's control (in a corrupted land/ world that hits closer to home than almost imaginable?)
What's integral to this world and humankind and how can/ do we rely upon it?
Holla. There's so much more to this and what's on my mind really. How? What? Why?
How is it possible for water to react to human feelings...?
Where was Jason Bourne when... and where is he now?
How good is Will Hunting these days?
What's physiognomy's etymology?
Amo ya Yauch. I can't even imagine life without the Beastie Boys... AT ALL. Like Ben Franklin without the key to his kite.
Now where do we go with it all now that they're here with us?
Ya heard?
And... go! Tell me what you see/ feel of the gestalt... analyze to synthesize right (describe your biorhythm)... dialectic, and so on...
Well, I'll put a tab there and step out for a moment or I'll keep editing until my time runs out. :p :D

Mike's monitoring his cardiovascular system with Oscilloscope's brand new handy revolutionary crunching cardiograph as he does his daily crunch workout in his crunch workout space. AdRock is standing by also monitoring Mike's workout making sure he doesn't fall, as well as checking the count so Mike does not cheat himself. MCA, or better known as Master of Crunches Adam brings Mike a modified crunch workout tool to help and says, "Put this on your abs for maximum technique and leverage". But as he says it, Adrock looses his count and, in order to avoid yet another confrontation that day, briefly looks away absolving his frustration. Mike also stares off into space, but his peripheral catches up with him and yells, "You're trying to screw me up I just know it." Mike was about to throw his monitor to the floor when Sasquatch, who the Beastie Boys, or namely, Yauch, had dyed white and locked in a freezer just yesterday for kidnapping them, had somehow escaped the freezer and was closing in fast...
To Be Continued...
Mike and AdRock are modifying the fluxcapacitor on Oscilloscope's space time continuum when MCA notices Mike using his electronic ruler/compass/calculator/KFC order menu... that he's been looking for in order to make sure his screwdriver is the right size for...

If these pictures of the day are gonna be part of the animations for the DVD I'm so looking forward to it! (like I wasn't otherwise  )
Yeah, look at the pic with the green bass(notice the contra bass shape wow!) it seems they're making animation movies, there's a camera up, and the lights on the sides, maybe they are making a fake storm on the bass strings!?!?!

That made me laugh but yo... someone's letting us peek into his studio while he's working, that's pretty cool, tangle of cables or no. :D
Of course this is coming from someone who goes out of her way to visit things like Tolstoy's writing desk and Mark Twain's newspaper printing operation while travelling... and was impressed by seeing one photo of Gerhard Richter's (completely sterile - and gigantic) studio... call me crazy. :)

To Be Continued...
... When Adam gently rocks Mike awaking him from his slumber. Adam asks Mike if the mainframe's modification is complete and ready for testing. Fresh from his dream, Mike starts talking of a brand new application for the highly classified invention they've been working on when Garfield, their English crawlspace sniffing Lab Retriever who is trying out Oscilloscope's new Xray vision glasses, starts to bark. Moments later, Sasquatch could be heard from seemingly far, far away, and then the secret sound of Oscilloscope's secret intercom sounds. Mike and Adam gear up the diagnostics when Yauch walks in with Sasquatch, who's all ready for their sparring session, almost tripping over Mike. Mike makes the decision to enXlarge himself to meet their other guest (who was the one who actually figured out how to sound the secret sound, saving the secret entrance any damage from...) It's none other than Elvin 'El' Lincoln, a doctor with the Misfits of Science, good friend and long time accompliss of the Beasties, who showed them how to miniaturize in order for them to actually get inside their computers and do other highly classified... I hear Tron 2.0 has a frikin' green light now.

 Believe me when I say that that dog is the most chillinist dog in New York..! So it stands to reason that she/ he is more of a chillidog, I'd have to say. :) Plus, Oscilloscope Laboratories have had to turn the A/C all the way down since Yeti & Sasquatch have been hangin' out there.
They've had/ managed to change/ modify a few of the Goiter Ball rules for fairness and compatability reasons, and also for the higher risk... but it has made for a funner, better, and more diverse playing field.
I hear Sasquatch is surveying some real estate up in the Adirondacks, and has found a prime location by a dam... a huge depression surrounded by trees and perfect water skipping rockbeds with 2 waterfalls, the first a virtually insane 3 story drop into a virtually bottomless pool that has been purported to lead to underwater caves and such. There is a phenomena as well 1 to 3 meters below the surface of the pool that you can feel on your legs and feet pulling you down, only to suspend you underwater momentarily before rising slowly back up. It's exhilarating. And that brings you right out onto the second level (for all intents and purposes) where you can stand underneath the falls or jump into the lake. The place is huge, and there's plenty of exploration to be had. The dam keeper is beastie friendly so he'll look out for Sasquatch. He also has a banjo he'll play for Sasquatch around the fire, if Sasquatch is up to it. A perfect sight for an environmentally benign game of paintball, rockclimbing... Not to mention that it's way off the beaten path. Yep.

So I get back from four weeks of working in Paris, where I was oblivious to what was happening in the rest of the world, ring Pootytang to ask "What up, boy?" and hear from him that the most interesting thing to occur in Beastieboysland is the launch of this site. Dang, that's disappointing but not surprising.
I don't mean to be a party pooper, but I don't find the site very interesting. Maybe my time in Paris has affected my senses. Or maybe the site isn't now what it was yesterday.
Who are they posting all the goofy stuff for? Possible clients or Beastie Boys fans? It doesn't seem like it's intended for clients. Doing goofy stuff for fans at that site seems kind of pointless to me.
Speak up, please: Who here at BBMB is going to book time at Oscilloscope?

Yeah, that's what I thought.
I would prefer to see some attention given to beastieboys.com. Be goofy and pointless here, ya know. Whatever...
No one's bothered to ask if the Oscilloscope site is Admin Rap's handiwork. I hear they do web design work when they're not pumping out the rhymes.
Thanks to b-grrrlie for starting the pic thread. I would have been lost without it, as most of the links posted in this thread now direct to an error page.
Sorry, have to disagree with ya. It's obvious that this site is all tied in with the corporate bullshit. No vault, no news until a press release, in two weeks a oscilloscope offered a peep into the what's going on more so than anything that ever happened over here since the nando.net days.

Exactly, if you enjoy the pic's ect and general randomness/goofing around on the site then what's the problem? There is none, if you think it's a waste of time or there isn't much coming off it, then that's fine to. People will be entertained in different ways, and the mere fact it's from the Beasties (abeit somewhere else) is good enough for me. It's by no means changing my life, but I think it's a fun response to the constant, and fair, call's by fans for some news/action.

I don't find the site very interesting.
I'm enjoying it, but to each her own.

About what?
The Lab we already know about?
The dvd we already know about?
The Bad Brains album we already know about?
It seems like people are only commenting on the goofy pics. The goofy pics don't say to me, "Hey, we the Beastie Boys are making music!" They say, "Hey, we're screwing around." Which is fine. Screw around. I screw around plenty myself.
I said it's pointless to provide content for an audience that's not going to use the professional services that Oscilloscope offers. If there's going to be any pointless stuff for fans, it belongs here where more fans are likely to see it.
Hmmm. I sense that she is turning to the dark side.

Na I don't think so, at least I hope not, I like M!
I quite like the site, although I can see what Miramanee's saying, I mean a lot of people have said loads of things in this thread that aren't really based on all that much...in terms of what the sites telling you, and geeezz the excitement created!
However, I quite like the site and feel those who enjoy it should just be left to enjoy it, so eeeease up a just a little :)

Hey, I found something (!) If you click on the small square button at the top all the way to the left it says "Please never push this button. Thank you." and I kept pressing it over and over again like a crackhead. I hope they don't think I'm a hacker!!! Also, there's picture 11!!! It's the small square button at the bottem. I find this stuff pretty interesting. :D

Pic 11 is pretty bland. Very much welcome, but a little boring by comparison. I am not complaining though.

M somehow missed the memo where we don't get to say anything remotely negative about the band or board anymore. It goes along with the "you can't criticize the President and be a good American" line of thought.
And I'm so freaking jealous about the Paris thing I can't stand it. I was supposed to go this year.

The thing is that I wasn't really saying anything negative about the band.
Yeah, I get that. But it seems to me that people are super touchy now. Maybe because there is nothing of substance to talk about.
My friends keep having brilliant ideas that don't pan out. I'm doing a big car trip of the US east coast in the spring but I can't wait that long. I keep running the fares every week though and if it gets cheap enough I'll go to Europe alone.

I enjoy this little oscilloscope toy! (regardless of how informative or insightful it is) I especially appreciate that probably one of the only ways to find out about this is by being a devout bbmb'er.
That plywood floor looks reeeeeeal nice! Gawd, what I wouldn't give to be a little mouse in the corner during a jam session.

I don't think they're actually looking for clients, the site seems like a teaser site (anyone that's into video games probably heard about ilovebees.com, it's kind of like that I think).
Best case scenario, they're recording new music with those instruments and putting together the DVD on that G5. The stack of DVD's is deffinately a hint at the DVD. Some people think that TT5B was short and used synthetic beats to get it out before the election, perhaps they've been working on something else since then (or even at the same time).
And the site is really fucking up for me, if I go to the homepage Firefox instantly closes. I'll try with IE, but I'm always scared to use it now because I get like 3 spyware toolbars.

Oh and in pic 10... there's no guitar. Just thought I'd point that out, it's kind of interesting that there's congas and keyboards but no guitar.

Miramanee, I think one of the reasons you don't find it interesting is that you weren't there when it started. First it was just mentioned as Yauch's homepage and then people started clicking on all the buttons and when there started popping up new pics everyday so people got excited. So much even that people wanted to buy the T-shirts they advertised (heck, even I ordered one), but guess they were taken by surprise that so many were interested about their goofiness and weren't quite prepared.
When I checked the site the first time there was under 100 visitors and now there's over 3000.
