I would've thought it'd be Joy Division...though they did overlap into the 80's. Have you listened to the No New York CD? I've been meaning to, but just haven't yet.

Joy Division is great, but one real album in the 1970's makes me choose somebody who was much more obviously a player through the whole decade (and his career is untouchable really). I haven't gotten no new york, it's impossible to find, although I'd get it if I saw it.

You put Bob Dylan in the '90s?
I'm probably a borderline Dylan fanatic and I own everything I can get my hands on he's been involved in...but I only had two CD's (a best of' and Blood on the Tracks) until the `90's, then he put out "Time Out of Mind".
I was just completly blown away. How fucking great is that CD? IMHO it is one of the most amazing CD's of the decade and he had already been the guiding force (not by his choice, he could care less) behind the last three decades of thought in American Music. So for me it is an awakening to his music and a homage to "Time Out of Mind" which kept me alive on many a long drive to and fro in Washington State chasing money in various towns.
As it is with Dylan...I saw him live a few months back with Merle...I really didn't like his performance at all, the phrasing and lyrics were to gargled to really be enjoyed. I've seen him live a half a dozen times or so and the best time of course was in the '90's.
Shit....that was way too long. Sorry.

It's the only Dylan CD I own. And it's fabulous.
I'm rediscovering my Dylan vinyl. I think I disliked him because my pain in the ass friend was a huge fan.
And shit, I need to put Neil Young on my list! Too many in the 70s but he belongs there I suppose.

they're coming back in august but they're playing at a 19+ venue. :(

ahh, isn't that the worst? age limits. boo. so many shows that i missed before i turned 21, or even 18 for that matter. it's a shame.

indeed. i just went to toronto with my girlfriend yesterday and we were trying to plan the trip around a concert, but everyone we were interested in seemed to be 19+. not fun.
most of the local shows here in london are all ages though. which is nice.
